Olympus H. Zuiko Auto-S 42mm f/1.2 review (The Panasonic alternative!).

As you know Panasonic will ship the new 42,5mm f/1.2 MFT lens in late 2013. While we don’t know the price yet we can be pretty certain that it will be expensive. You could buy the [shoplink 41062 ebay]Nokton 42,5mm f/0.95 lens (here one Bay)[/shoplink] but you still have to pay $100 (or 100 Euro) for it. A nice and cheaper anlternative could be the lens tested by LightAndLogic (Click here): The [shoplink 41063 ebay]Olympus H. Zuiko Auto-S 42mm f/1.2 (ebay auctions here)[/shoplink]. Alex writes:

When it comes to superfast lenses on Micro Four Thirds, options are somewhat limited. The H. Zuiko 42mm f/1.2 has several advantages over other adapted f/1.2 or faster lenses. In fact until the Panasonic/Leica 42.5mm is released, it is the smallest and lightest superfast lens available. In my real-world testing over the last few weeks, I have found this Zuiko to be very enjoyable to use. It is a fun lens that is easy to get used to, and produces some amazing images. It will live on the front of my EP-5 for the foreseeable future.

Great lens really!

(UPDATED) Interview with Blackmagic manager.

Share

The German site Slashcam.de (Thanks guys!) interviewed Mr. Stuart Ashton from Blackmagic Team. Watch from minute 1.30 for the Pocket camera news. He says the “Black Dots” issue has been fixed with the new firmware update. And the “Blooming” issue affects only a small stock of cameras. This will be fixed by Blackmagic with a recalibration (you have to send them the camera).

The Pocket Cinema Camera shipments are slow and according to BHphoto (Click here) you will have to wait 2-4 months(!) if you order the camera now.

UPDATE: Blackmagic contacted us to say that “the rumor about a 4K camera with an active MFT mount is inaccurate“. It’s a 2,5K camera with active mount.

P.S.: Blackmagic Pocket Cinema preorders in USA at Adorama (Click here), BHphoto (Click here) and in Germany at Technikdirekt, in France at pbs-video. In Sweden at macoteket, scandinavianphoto, protel.jetshop, webhallen.

(FT4) Guess what? Both compact camera rumors may be correct. New XZ now and High End compact later.

Share

Yesterday I posted a low rated FT2 rumor about an XZ camera with 28-300mm zoom and a Four Third sensor camera with fixed lens. I wasn’t sure which one was correct but with a little bit of help of one trusted and one new source (Thanks!) I learned that most likely both rumors are correct!

1) The new XZ compact camera with 28-300mm zoom and same sensor size like current XZ cameras will be announced in October.

2) Olympus is definitely working on a High End Premium compact camera with Four Thirds sensor. But it’s likely NOT going to be announced in October.

So there was the reason of the confusion, I got small bits of rumors about two different cameras and not one camera :)

[shoplink 37225 ebay][/shoplink]

An [shoplink 37225 ebay]Olympus XA[/shoplink] compact and fixed lens film camera (Image courtesy: Camerapedia).

I wouldn’t get too excited about that rumor as it comes from a new source. So there is only a low chance this is correct. But sometimes even FT2 rumors become true and this sounds so good that I hope this is one of these rare times :)

The new source reported this:

I´ve got som news from japan: Olympus will very soon show a new high end camera. It will have a four thirds sensor. it is no system camera. bigger and better than the xz-series.

UPDATE: Another anonymous source said the rumor from the other sources isn’t correct. He writes:

This rumour about the compact camera with 4/3 is incorrect. The new compact will have the same size sensor as the XZ-2, it will however have a new lens, 28-300mm with a constant f2.8. Will m
Be announced in Oct

I hope trusted sources can soon confirm which one of the two is correct.

If it’s going to be really a completely new camera than they may will revive seom glorious film camera from the past:
