Will Olympus go Lytro?

Share

I guess you all know the Lytro camera (cameras at amazon here, official website here). In short it’s a camera that doesn’t need to focus and also allows you to interactively change your point of view in a picture. And Olympus just patented a smart idea where you use an adapter between your MFT lens and camera to capture Lytro alike images! The adapter has a built-in special micro-lens array. This is really a smart idea! You can use all current MFT cameras and lenses to create a dramatically different kind of photo! If they really do that this would create a quantum leap advantage over the competition! What do you think?

You can see the price and specs of current Lytro cameras at Amazon (Click here)

Would you buy such an adapter?

Also Panasonic will reduce compact camera investment by 60%. Focus on Mirrorless.

Share

On May 30, 2013, Panasonic held IR meeting with the presidents of 4 Companies and CFO, following its business reorganization conducted on April 1, 2013. You cna download all documents at http://panasonic.net/ir/presentation/irday2013/. The main interesting file for us is the AVC Networks Company PDF.

What’s hot:
First: It looks like Panasonic development of image sensors will now be developed for the medical, automotive and security business mainly. It may be that Panasonic will buy future MFT sensors from third party companies like Sony only?
Second: Panasonic wants to cut 60% of the current development costs of compact cameras.
Third: Panasonic will now focus their efforts on the mirrorless market by enhancing the product uniqueness, launch more lenses for “motion pictures” (video)

It was inevitable for Panasonic to focus on the mirrorless market. And I am also not really surprised about the new sensor strategy. A while ago Panasonic managers stated in multiple interviews that they now want to go up to the professional digital camera business. It will be not easy for them to compete against giants like Canon and Nikon! What can they do to succeed?

New Panasonic G6 review (shipping in Europe, free Gh3 battery grip in UK).

Share

Digitalcameraworld tested the G6 and you can view their video review on top: “All things considered, I think the G6 is a great compact system camera, it’s got a high quality viewfinder and Wi-Fi communication built-in, a variangle touch-screen, allows plenty of control over images and produces great results.

The G6 is now shipping in Europe (Technikdirekt, Fotomundus).

New EU deals:
Many new refurboshed E-m5 cameras at [shoplink 22691 ebay]Olympusmarket (Click here tos ee them all)[/shoplink] At Amazon UK you get the battery grip for free along the GH3camera! It remains a mystery why they don’t do this for all Europe…

(FT5) Ultr-small Panasonic MFT confirmed. Coming in 2014. Not a GF.

Share

Three sources confirmed that the ultra small camera MFT camera form Panasonic will arrive in early 2014. And one source also said this is not a “GF” branded camera! There is no info about the specs yet and what’s more important…about the size. 43rumors reader amweber (Thanks!) made the smallest possible mockup design. Don’t know how easy it will be to hold a tiny camera like that :)

IN summary, the GX7 with built-in tilting EVF, 2 axis stabilization and new 18 megapixel sensor will be announced in late August. The camera coming after the GX7 will be that ultra small compact and it will hit the stores in early 2014.

Ok, now it’s time to work on the Olympus camera and lens roadmap…
