(FT2) Is that the design of the upcoming Olympus 25mm f/1.8 lens?

Rumors about a possible release of a new Olympus 25mm f/1.8 MFT lens are floating around since end of 2012. And now that image of the possible lens design appeared on Julur.com. The design discloses the filter size (46mm) and of course focal length and aperture. There is no info about the overall size of the lens. I hope it will be a pancake like the glorious [shoplink 14796]Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 lens[/shoplink]. And of course it shouldn’t be epxensive.

Just for fun let’s see if….

you would buy the Olympus 25mm f/1.8 pancake for $400.

(FT5) Hot! First image of the new 20mm f/1.7 II lens!

The new Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 II lens just leaked in Japan (Digicaminfo). And here are the full specs of the lens that will be announced very soon!

– Seven lenses in five groups. 2 aspherical lens.
– Filter diameter is 46mm
– Total length 25.5mm, maximum diameter 63mm
– 87g Weight
– The exterior Barrel is of metal
– It will come in silver and black
– Estimated retail price of around 40,000 yen

In short: The lens has the same lens design as the previous model although we don’t know yet if the image quality has been improved by using new single lenses. The good news is that Panasonic managed to make the lens even more lighter than the previous version (87g versus the 100g of the older pancake). I am not sure yet btu I think the autofocus performance has been improved too!

The most famous MFT lens gets discontinued! 20mm f/1.7 officially out of production.

.

Panasonic Japan officially announced that the production of the 20mm f/1.7 lens ceased. And a rumor I was just working with one of my trusted sources was that there will be a replacement coming soon. This is already a very good lens and let’s hope Panasonic can make it even more better with the new generation.

The lens is still one of the most sold at Amazon US (ranking here). Always on top 10 since the day it was launched!

(FT4) More current Panasonic zooms will be updated within 2013.

I am really very excited about the upcoming Panasonic GX7 announcement. In two months we will be able to see the real camera (or maybe before if I manage to get some pics from sources). But will there be some new lenses too? The two 42,5mm f/1.2 and the 150mm f/2.8 lenses will hit the stores in early 2014 only. But there price and first preorders may be announced along the GX7.

Today a trusted source told me that also a couple of current zooms will be updated like it just happened with the 14-140mm lens. No other “completely new” lens will be announced this year. By the way, US readers should grab the 45-20mm lens deal for $174 at Amazon US. This lens is likely going to be replaced but at that price level it’s still on top of any buying list!

Reminder: A while ago Panasonic stated at DSLRmagazine (translation here) that they “want to expand the “affordable” lens range.

Competition: Galaxy makes worldwide first Android mirrorless camera. Fuji X leaked.

Samsung Galaxy NX hands-on by Imaging Resource

Still two months to go until Panasonic will announce the GX7 with built-in EVF and Olympus the new low end OMD and high end (hybrid?) camera. But meantime a couple of new cameras are being announced by the competition:

Samsung is trying to revive their NX mirrorless system by announcing something really unique. The Galaxy NX which features an immense 4.8 inch LCD screen and runs on Android Jelly Bean (4.2.2) operating system. The video on top shows you how the camera works. As you see it’s like using a Samsung smartphone! You can now use Android apps like Instagram or whatever directly on your NX mirrorless camera. I don’t think this is the way to go for Panasonic and Olympus. I mean, a seamless wireless integration between camera and smartphones like we have on the Olympus E-P5 is a better way to go!

One more news: The new Fuji X-M1 just got leaked at MirrorlessRumors. This is the first entry level Fuji X camera and will put a lot of pressure on E-PL/PM and GF series.

(FT5) Delay on the Schneider MFT lens release.

According to trusted sources the launch of the new Schneider MFT lenses has been delayed by at least six months. The reason for this are the limited production capability. But don’t worry they will come for sure :)

One of the sources also told me that the lenses will cost less(!) than 1.500 Euro. As you know there will be three of them, the 14mm f/2.0 the 30mm f/1.4 and the Macro 60mm f/2.4.

All three lenses also have:
– Full electronic aperture control and autofocus.
– High-refractive lenses and special lens elements
– Internal focusing
– Very high resolution across the entire image area, even at full starting aperture
– High-quality aluminum casing, robust mechanics
– Hydrophobic coating of outer elements
– Protection against dust and splashing

By the way, a reader (Thanks!) sent me that size comparison with some existing MFT lenses. Click on it to see a large size version.

P.S: Some of the current Schneider lenses makes for other mounts. A couple of them would be welcome as a native MFT version!
