Ian Berry talks about the GX7 (+ new camera reviews)

Share

Let’s take a break from Olympus news! Panasonic just posted that youtube video with Ian Barry. Great video!

There are also four new camera reviews from Photoxels, Focus Numerique (French), Fotovideo (Dutch) and Photographyblog. Photographyblog rates the camera as Essential and writes:

In short the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX7 is one of our favourite cameras of 2013, judging it against both its compact system and DSLR competition.

Focus Numerique writes that up to ISO 3,200 there is little difference between the GX7 and the Olympus E-P5. But if go higher the GX7 shows a better performance.

After the E-M1: Does Olympus have to go Full Frame?

Share

The E-M1 is selling that well that Amazon issued a High Demand warning (Click here to read it). Same warning applies for the new 12-40mm PRO lens too (Click here). The E-M1 is a great camera but according to ThePhoBlographer Olympus can’t rest on this success

“It only seems like a matter of time until Sony wipes the floor with the rest of the industry and releases a full frame mirrorless camera. And with that said, the mirrorless interchangeable lens camera world will experience the same shift that the DSLR world took where everyone always complained about the smaller sensors in Olympus cameras.
Olympus surely seems like they’ve got quite the uphill battle to face with their photography division. And somehow or another, they’re going to need to innovate and create something that no one else has that is extremely marketable–and it will need to be a hit with the mass market.”

Now, I am really not a fan of MFT vs FF sensor discussions. It’s like saying a big car is always better than a smaller car. You cannot compare two cameras by considering as only factor the sensor size. And to be honest when seeing prints you hardly see any difference!
It’s true that Sony will soon announce a mirrorless FF camera. But it will cost 2.5 times the E-M1 and I doubt it will give you the same kind of mature usability and durability. That said the High End market is the most profitable. And maybe that’s one of the few reasons why Olympus could/should make a FF Macro Four thrids system :)

New E-M1 test roundup (D600 vs E-M1)….and Robin Wong got more outgoing clicks than Dpreview :)

Share

E-M1 unboxing video by Damian McGilliCuddy.

Let’s catch up with some new E-M1 tests:

Mig Thein (Click here) posted the second part of his ongoing E-M1 review and made a JPEG comaprison between the E-M1, D600 and E-M5:

What I do notice though is the highlight rolloff of the E-M1 seems to be the best of the three, though it shares the densest shadows with the E-M5; the E-M5′s highlights are a bit dull, and the D600 seems to clip abruptly. Differences in native tonal response? Probably. Though the two M4/3 cameras are pretty close on resolution, I’d give the E-M1 a hair in acuity and microcontrast; it must be a mix of the lack of AA filter and new image processing engine; fine detail just doens’t seem as coarse as the E-M5. The D600 is clearly resolving a little bit more than the other two – look at all of the number plates – but it’s really surprisingly quite close.

Also DSLRmagazine (google translation here) posted an E-M1 and E-M5 ISO comparison. And they write that the difference is noticeable

I just checked my stats to see what link to E-M1 (p)reviews got more clicked. And to my surprise Robin Wong’s E-M1 preview got more clicks than the preview at Dpreview. (Stats via GetClicky). And also Ming Thein and Pekka Potka did quite well. Amazing to see how one man blog can beat a huge website owned by Amazon :) Well done Robin!

First preorder reaction: E-M1 most sold overall(!) camera at Amazon US!

Share

12 hours after the announcement the Olympus E-M1 is the most sold (orders+ preorders) digital camera at Amazon US (Click here to see the ranking). The ranking includes all camera like compact cameras, Sony QX, DSRL and Mirrorless cameras. And you really don’t see it often an Olympus camera being more popular than a Canon or Nikon FF. And the 12-40mm lens is on second place of the Lens ranking (Click here). The rankings do change hourly but this is definitely a very good first result for Olympus. The E-P5 don’t even made it into the top 100 of the overall ranking when launched back in June. Just to say… :)

Honestly I wasn’t expecting such a good result.
