HOT: Panasonic just confirmed the GH6 is coming this year!!!

Photolari attended a Panasonic press conference and there managers told them this:

The Panasonic GH5 successor will be unveiled within 2021.

They have not unveiled anything about the possible specs. But it’s highly likely that it will have a 30+ MP sensor that can record 8K. Such a sensor already exists and Sony published the specs here:

Still, no guarantee yet this is the sensor that Panasonic is going to use. But hard to believe they will miss the 8K train :)

New rumor: Olympus to make camera phones with Samsung!

Gizmochina is pretty certain the rumors circulating lately are true: Olympus and Samsung will enter a partnership. Samsung would benefit of the “Olympus” photography brand name on their lenses.

What’s in for use “normal” MFT users? Nothing yet, but Samsung also makes great image sensors and I would love Samsung to offer MFT sensors to OM Digital! After all Olympus still has a stake in the new company. I am dreaming for now :)

Panasonic Interview at Dpreview: ‘We will strengthen both full frame and M43’

Dpreview interviewed Yosuke Yamane, director of Panasonic’s Imaging Division. About the MFT future he says:

We will strengthen our product lineup in both full-frame and Micro Four Thirds in order to support all shooting opportunities for creators. We have full-frame for creators who want more power to capture images and videos with a shallow depth of field, and M43 for creators who want compactness, light weight, mobility, and an adequate depth of field. The product group consists of two systems with different characteristics, which supports various shooting scenes and demonstrates the creator’s imagination.

Last year, we introduced the Lumix DC-S5, which has a compact and lightweight body and high performance in both still images and videos. On the other hand, in M43, in addition to the GH5, GH5S, and G9 we introduced the Lumix DC-G100, which is highly portable and allows you to enjoy vlogging, and the box-style camera the Lumix DC-BGH1, which increases flexibility in video production and has excellent video performance and customizability. M43 has a wide range of uses, and many creators have high expectations for new M43 products. We will continue to strengthen the lineup from this year onwards.

About the future MFT lenses:

in the future, we are planning to develop more lenses that meet the needs of creators regardless of whether they shoot M43 or full-frame.

FF versus MFT:

Compared to full-frame sensors, M43 sensors are easier to read out quickly, and they consume less power. This is one of the reasons why we have been able to keep our video features one step ahead. The higher the speed, the better the high-speed shooting performance, the less rolling shutter distortion, and the more potential for autofocus performance improvements. We would like to take advantage of [the potential for higher-speed sensor readout in M43] and continue to take advantage of the unique features of M43 to create attractive products that will please our end users.

OM Digital registered a new camera in China!

There is life on OM Digital’s planet :)

Today a new registration was spotted in China. OM Digital Solutions has an unreleased model with the camera code “IM024”. It is equipped with Wi-Fi (2.4GHz) and Bluetooth. I guess the camera will be announced within the next 2-3 months. What will it be?

Dclife speculates OM Digital might join the L-mount alliance

The Japanese site DC.life is speculating about a possible L-mount move from OM Digital. They name a couple of reasons why they think that might be the case:

  1. First we have fact that the L-mount alliance itself announced that new partners might be coming soon.
  2. OM Digital is now free from Olympus “philosophy” of sticking to MFT only
  3. OM Digital announced a new “WOW” product for end 2021 or early 2022. This wow product may be a FF camera?

I think these speculation are unlikely to be true. Nevertheless…you never know!

Great news! Panasonic says new “revolutionary” MFT zoom and new MFT fast primes are in the works along the GH6!

Panasonic posted this long video chat for the CP+ online event. From around 51:00, Mr. Uno talks about the Micro Four Thirds system and says:

  • Yes we are “considering” to make the GH5 successor (which is just a diplomatic way to say “yes we are doing it”).
  • We are also considering to make a “Revolutionary” new zoom lenses and new fast single focus lenses for Micro Four Thirds.
  • He says “Please look forward to it”

Finally a big bold statement from Panasonic! This breathes some fresh hope into the MFT system believers :)
