Will Olympus go Lytro?

I guess you all know the Lytro camera (cameras at amazon here, official website here). In short it’s a camera that doesn’t need to focus and also allows you to interactively change your point of view in a picture. And Olympus just patented a smart idea where you use an adapter between your MFT lens and camera to capture Lytro alike images! The adapter has a built-in special micro-lens array. This is really a smart idea! You can use all current MFT cameras and lenses to create a dramatically different kind of photo! If they really do that this would create a quantum leap advantage over the competition! What do you think?

You can see the price and specs of current Lytro cameras at Amazon (Click here)

Would you buy such an adapter?

(FT5) Ultr-small Panasonic MFT confirmed. Coming in 2014. Not a GF.

Three sources confirmed that the ultra small camera MFT camera form Panasonic will arrive in early 2014. And one source also said this is not a “GF” branded camera! There is no info about the specs yet and what’s more important…about the size. 43rumors reader amweber (Thanks!) made the smallest possible mockup design. Don’t know how easy it will be to hold a tiny camera like that :)

IN summary, the GX7 with built-in tilting EVF, 2 axis stabilization and new 18 megapixel sensor will be announced in late August. The camera coming after the GX7 will be that ultra small compact and it will hit the stores in early 2014.

Ok, now it’s time to work on the Olympus camera and lens roadmap…

(FT4) Olympus will now share the 5 axis stabilization system with Sony.

Last week I reported that Olympus is helping Sony in developing new A-mount lenses. The first co-developed lens will be the 400mm f/4.0 A-mount lens (to be launched in early 2014). And now according to multiple sources Olympus is also sharing their knowledge of the 5 axis image stabilization to Sony. All next A-mount cameras will have a so called “5-axis SSM”. This is a further and more advanced development of the current E-M5 system and it has been designed for Full Frame sensor.

In return Olympus will get the top notch sensors from Sony with phase detection on sensor. What I don’t know yet if there is a plan for Olympus to make a larger (FF?) mirrorless system camera in collaboration with Sony. Anyway, I find this partnership can turn out be very exciting!

Double hint from Pekka…

Pekka continues to raise the suspense on the next new OMD model by hinting tidbit

First Pekka wroteFor some of us E-P5 actually moves our expectations to the next model in OM-D line. I know pretty much what will be the big highlight of this body. Quite obvious to everyone seeing E-P5 should be that the next OM-D series model goes well above E-M5 in features. Incorporating VF-4 should be just one of them. And that is all I can say now…

And now: “E-P5 AF with 4/3 system lenses: Maybe there is a slight improvement over E-M5 maybe not. I tried shortly but did not notice anything worth closer look because the real thing for 4/3 lens owners is already on its way.

Meantime PChome (google translated) had an Interview with Olympus manager Mr. Haruo. And the interviewer couldn’t spill out any new info about the future releases but he said that he “got the feeling” that the new E-mount camera will be smaller than the previous E-5.

OM to MFT Speed Booster to be announced soon!

I have been told by multiple sources that Metabones will do me (sorry us) a favour and release the new OM to MFT Speed Booster adapter within the next few weeks! That’s great news for all us OM lens owners! All lenses will become faster and FF equivalent. Here is the Metabones pdf file that explains how to do the math. An example, the [shoplink 28872 ebay]35mm f/2.0 OM lens[/shoplink] on the Speed Booster becomes a 25mm f/1.4 lens.

And as you know there are a huge amount of OM lenses we can use! Panasonic super small MFT and Nokton super fast lens.

On Saturday we posted two new big MFT info. And as on weekends most of the people don’t visit this site I am going to sum up the two news:

Voigtlander Nokton 42,5mm f/0.95 lens:
The lens will ship in July for 1199 Euro. And according to the poll results it looks like only 10% of our readers are going to buy that lens.

The bigger news is the Panasonic super tiny MFT rumors:
The camera could be announced in late 2013. It’s a new G camera that is smaller than any MFT camera we have seen so far. There is no info about price and specs yet. But the new Panasonic strategy will be: Go ultra small on the one side and go with built-in EVF with the GX series. Sounds good or not?

(FT4) Ultra compact Panasonic MFT to be launched by end of the year?

[shoplink 23109 ebay][/shoplink]

Digicaminfo reports that Panasonic will launch a new ultra-compact Micro Four Thirds camera by end of the year. The camera will be smaller than the [shoplink 23109]Panasonic GF3[/shoplink]. The same rumor also confirms the rumor I posted about the GX7 camera that will be larger than any other GX-GF camera we have seen so far.

In short, the GF line will become ultra small, the GX line much larger. Makes sense to me!

P.S.: The source compares the new ultra small compact with the GF3 because this is the smallest MFT camera to date. Put a 14mm pancake on it and you can carry it in your pocket. In US you can have that combo for $249 at [shoplink 39186 ebay]eBay US (Click here)[/shoplink].
