Panasonic announcement confirmed to happen on February 1

Share

I now got the exact date of the Panasonic announcement: Reviews and first Panasonic S1-S1R preorders will go online at 11:30 London time of February 1. And as you can see from the image on top and the video teaser below everything is focused on the new S Full Frame mirrorless line.

There is no hint at all that we might get some MFT related gear too. Anyway, it will be interesting to see what tech Panasonic will throw on the S line. Some of that might be used on future MFT cameras too.

Olympus had considered developing a medium format camera but decided against it !!!

CameraJabber reports a very curious information revealed during todays Olympus E-M1X press event

Olympus is focusing on the Micro Four Thirds system was a clear message at the press announcement of the new OM-D E-M1X. Speaking in an interview, with UK press, Olympus’s Shigemi Sugimoto (Head of Imaging Business unit) and Setsuya Kataoka (Division Manager, Imagining Product Development) said that the company had considered developing a medium format camera but that it had decided against it.

And:

Mr Sugimoto said at Photokina that full-frame cameras are good for the Micro Four Thirds (MFT) system as it makes the smaller system’s advantages stand out.

UPDATE: A reader sent me this image of an old M format prototype from Olympus (was not medium format but looked like a medium format camera):

Few more real world images of the new 150-400mm PRO and 2x Teleconverter lens

Share

CameraJabber posted these images of the new lens and converter prototype.

And Dpreview has those images:

Here is some info about the new gear:

M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 2X TELECONVERTER MC-20

The M.Zuiko Digital 2x Teleconverter, MC-20 doubles the focal length of the master lens while offering outstanding portability as well as dustproof, splashproof, and freezeproof (-10°C) performance. The teleconverter is compatible with the M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO lens, currently in development, as well as the M.Zuiko Digital ED 300mm F4.0 IS PRO and M.Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F2.8 PRO lenses. Not only does this teleconverter extend the telephoto range, but it also doubles the maximum shooting magnification of the master lens for unprecedented super telephoto macro shooting. This item has an expected availability of summer 2019.

M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 150-400MM F4.5 TC1.25X IS PRO

Development is under way for the M.Zuiko Digital ED 150-400mm F4.5 TC1.25x IS PRO, a super telephoto zoom lens in the M.Zuiko PRO series, designed for exceptional optical performance in a compact, lightweight form, along with dustproof, splashproof, and freezeproof (-10°C) performance and superb mobility. This is the first Olympus interchangeable lens with a built-in 1.25x teleconverter, which easily extends the lens to the maximum focal length of 1000mm1 (35mm equivalent). It also offers in-lens image stabilization (IS), supporting 5-axis Sync IS[1] when operating in concert with the image stabilization of Olympus OM-D cameras. The compact system delivers remarkable portability, and the built-in teleconverter provides convenience, making it the optimal super telephoto zoom lens for sports and bird photography. This lens has an expected availability of 2020.

E-M1X reviewers thoughts roundup…

E-M1X with the new 150-400mm f/4.5 lens image by Dpreview.

E-M1X Preorders:
Olympus E-M1X in USA at Amazon, GetOlympus, Adorama and BHphoto.
Olympus E-M1X in Europe at Calumet Germany, ParkCameras, Jessops, WexUK.

Time to have a quick roundup of the reviewers E-M1X tests conclusions:

Dpreview:

“An inherent benefit of a smaller sensor is that it has less inertia, making it easier to provide stabilization. This is borne-out with a frankly astonishing rating of 7EV, even before you consider the 7.5EV it’ll achieve with the 12-100mm F4. There are footnotes to all these claims, of course, and we tend to find we don’t experience quite the number that CIPA testing promises, but this system is seriously good from what we’ve experienced so far.”

Digitalcameraworld:

“If size isn’t a factor, this is undoubtedly the ultimate Micro Four Thirds camera. And, if you ignore the narrative about sensor size, this is arguably the ultimate mirrorless camera, period.”

Robin Wong:

“To me, I appreciate the significant improvement in AF, both in general S-AF in all situations, as well as vastly more efficient extreme low light AF. This upgrade alone can make or break the deal in some very challenging shooting scenarios. For motorsports shooters, the new subject tracking mode may just make your life so much better with automatic subject detection and tracking, which proved to work very efficiently.”

LCEgroup:

The E-M1X is an extremely well-built device, with some excellent handling and some very strong features, particularly in terms of its image stabilisation, burst shooting and video. For those sports and wildlife shooters with an investment in Micro Four Third glass, it’s going to be a very tempting proposition. That smaller sensor size will likely deter some professionals still, but the ability to utilise a smaller and more lightweight system and still get serious telephoto reach may appeal to others.

New E-M1X studio test from DPreview: “high-res Pixel Shift mode is still impressive”

Share

Dpreview added the Studio test results for the E-M1X including pixel shift test shots:

“Our standard studio tests show that conventional stills performance is little changed from the E-M1 II, but its high-res Pixel Shift mode is still impressive.”

Peter Baumgarten also tested the E-M1X and writes:

In the short time that I have been using the E-M1X I have been quite impressed with its performance and more importantly, the quality of images I was able to get. After a few days of use my muscle memory got used to the increase in size and found the camera to be quite comfortable, especially with the longer lenses. At a price of $2999 USD, this isn’t a camera that most enthusiasts will turn to. However, with the rugged build, great image quality, and increased performance it is definitely one that should attract many professionals who want the advantages of m4/3s system.
