Sony NEX vs MicroFourThirds

Share

According to very reliable informations on SonyAlphaRumors the Sony NEX cameras will not have in-body stabilization. I guess they wanted to make the camera as small as possible. They will not have built-in flash and no electronic viewfinder (only an optional optical viewfinder). Sony NEX lenses will be bigger than MicroFourThirds lenses. Even the Sony 16mm f/2.8 pancake is bigger than the Olympus 17mm f/2.8 Lens or the Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 lens (the 16mm lens has a diameter of 49mm).

It sounds like the real killer-feature will be the cheap price (and 1080p with the NEX5).

Update your Olympus PEN (the firmware is now here)

Share

http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/oima_slr_penfirmware.asp?intCmp=geto_rdrct_penfirmware

Auto Focus Performance
This update will improve camera AF performance when shooting both stills and videos with the E-P1, E-P2 and E-PL1 cameras when using any Micro Four Thirds or Four Thirds lens. Auto Focus Lock time when shooting stills is improved by 15%. Auto Focus tracking accuracy when shooting movies is also improved.

Viewfinder/LCD Simultaneous Playback Function
This upgrade also brings additional display functionality to the E-P2 and E-PL1 cameras when fitted with the VF-2 Electronic Viewfinder. Photographers using these combinations can now view menu and recorded images on the LCD while the VF-2 Electronic Viewfinder is in use.

Movie-Still-Compatible (MSC) Lens Compatibility
This update also ensures that like the E-PL1, the E-P1 and E-P2 camera models are fully compatible with and able to take advantage of two recently announced and soon-to-reach market lenses; the M. Zuiko Digital™ ED 9–18mm F4.0–5.6 and M. Zuiko Digital ED 14–150mm F4.0–5.6 lenses. Olympus is designating these two lenses as MSC, or Movie-Still-Compatible. They are optimized for shooting high definition video with accurate and silent autofocus.

Thoughts about the Panasonic adapter patent

Share

Few days ago we told you about the new Panasonic patent which discloses a new adapter for MicroFourThirds. The adapter camera ads a mirror and phase detection on MicroFourThirds cameras.
Zone-10 and EOSHD analyzed the patent and found something interesting:

Zone-10: “What is specifically significant about this adaptor is the 0.5x optics which effectively halves the focal length of a legacy lens placed on the camera.
EOSHD: “The result is a ‘blur-free image’ with a full frame focal length.

(FT3) About the Olympus E-5 and the 400-series

A fake image of the E-5

Finally some new rumors about Olympus!
You will remember that we told you that the Olympus E-5 release has been delayed because of the MicroFourThirds success. Olympus seems to not have enough production capability for MicroFourThirds and FourThirds stuff. Acoording to one of our known and trusted sources “there are new late changes being made to the E-3/E-30 replacement duo as we speak“. Interesting is the fact that he says E-3/E-30. Could the E-5 be considered as the replacement for both cameras?

He also told me that “there is some confusion right now as to what we want to do with the 400-series E-System group because it is possible that the Pen range could take up the slack here

P.S.: We are 99% certain the Olympus E-5 will be announced soon (between June and September).
