(FT5) Rumor upgrade: Yes, the Olympus 17mm is coming!

We have to upgrade our Olympus lens rumor from FT4 to FT5. Other three sources (including Lepidi) confirmed that the 17mm f/1.8 lens will hit the stores in early-mid December. We expect an official Olympus press release any time soon. What I don’t know yet is if Olympus will announce “something else” along that lens…

As reported before the lens will have the same build quality of the 12mm lens and be priced at 550 Euro. I don’t know the price in Dollars yet but let’s make a rough estimation: The 12mm lens costs $799 at Amazon and around 620 Euro lowest price on eBay. Having that conversion rate as reference the 17mm lens should cost around $710.

Will you buy the 17mm f/1.8 lens for 550 Euro/$710?

Dpreview mistake made you think Zeiss would do MFT lens :)

By mistake Dpreview today announced that Zeiss would release the Zeiss 135mm and in MFT mount. They confused the M42 screw mount with the MFT (Micro Four Thirds) mount. Dpreview quickly removed the post but some of our readers still think that this was a correct news. That’s why I am reporting this.

The only Zeiss lenses we can use on our MFT cameras are the superb [shoplink 24401 ebay]Zeiss ZM lenses (her eon eBay)[/shoplink]. You have to use a M to MFT mount adapter for them. My favorite ZM lens is the Zeiss Planar 50mm (here on Slidoo eBay). But of course you don’t have electronic communication between these kind of lenses and your MFT camera. I can live with that.

BH marks some E-P3 kits as “discontinued”

The well known US store BHphoto just marked most of the E-P3 kits as being “discontinued” (Click here to see the list). This doesn’t necessarily mean that the successor is coming but it matches the rumor we posted two weeks ago saying that new Olympus cameras are going to be announced within the next 2-3 months. Question is what’s coming?

Meantime, the E-PL5 is in Stock at Amazon and BHphoto. And so the E-Pm2 (Amazon and BHphoto). But the most sold camera at Amazon is the Panasonic GF3 (ranking here).

Surprise: The NEX-5R and E-M5 have the same Dynamic Range!

How much difference in dynamic range do we have between the Sony 16 Megapixel sensor of the new NEX-5R and the 16 Megapixel Sony sensor of the Olympus E-M5? That question has just been answered by DxOmark (Click here). And it’s quite a surprise to see that both cameras have exact the same dynamic range! The only real difference is that the E_m5 has no ISO 100 and that’s why the NEX-5R has a better overalls core. But from ISO 200 up to ISO 12800 both cameras are delivering the same performance. The question now is, why can’t we have ISO 100 on the E-M5 too?

UPDATE: Some people still think that I made up the story of the E-M5 having a Sony sensor. Guys, Hiroyuki Sasa CEO of Olympus said it!!! Here is the source: DC.watch.
