(UPDATED) Metabones Speed Booster adapter will be made for OM lenses too!

Share

Metabones created the buzz of the week when back on Monday they announced the new Speed Booster adapter. By narrow the image circle of FF or APS-C lenses they can increase the speed of a lens used on a MFT sensor. But they didn’t yet unveil what mounts will be supported. Our reader Knut (Thanks) was able to contact the Metabones manager and they confirmed to him that Metabones will do an OM to MFT Speed Booster adapter!

UPDATE_2: Here is the Metabones pdf file that explains how to do the math. An example, the [shoplink 28872 ebay]35mm f/2.0 OM lens[/shoplink] on the Speed Booster becomes a 25mm f/1.4 lens.

And as you know there are a huge amount of OM lenses we can use! Panasonic interview: “we are developing lenses for sport photographers”

Share

There is a new Panasonic interview at Imaging Resource (Click here) with Mr Darin Pepple, senior marketing manager at Panasonic. There is a lot of talk about WiFi and mobile integration but also some talk about MFT. Here are some highlights:

1) Mr. Pepple says that “we’re seeing a lot of professional photographers who are in the wedding and event fields making the transition to video. In fact, in an upcoming trade event, you will see us present several photographers who are showcasing their ideas on how a traditional photographer can make use of video as part of their workflow.

2) Interesting: The GH2 and a lot of the hacks that you saw coming into the GH2 inspired Panasonic to do more.

3) Panasonic clearly underlines the advantages of contrast af that is far more reliable and accurate than phase detection AF. And Panasonic says that on sensor Phase detection is “really more of just a software trick.

4) About the development of a new bigger sensor mirrorless system he answers: “I don’t think we’re going to do that.

5) And finally a real new “rumor”. Mr. Pepple says that “a 300mm f/2.8 or even a 600mm f/2.8 would be a great thing to have. We don’t have that yet. So, at f/2.8 we go to up to about 100mm and that’s the limit for us. We’ve got some development to do in the optics to make the sports photographers interested.

6) There are also some interesting considerations about how to market Panasonic mirrorless cameras. They are no more trying to advertise the general “mirrorless” concept, they are now more and more focusing on advertisign the top features of the camera. That’s the right approach I think.

It’s a really interesting interview I invite you to read in full at Imaging Resource!

Panasonic GF5 fading out from US stores. Successor to be announced soon.

[shoplink 36107 ebay]

[/shoplink] The Panasonic GF5 X is now no more available at Amazon (Click here) and Adorama (Click here). There are still a few left in Stock with the 14-42mm (non X) lens. I have no final specs of the GF5 successor but I have been told it is a minor upgrade and nothing super exiting. The new successor won’t be smaller than the current GF5.  It will be interesting to see if Panasonic will also launch a fixed lens RX100 competitor later this year. That camera will be the smallest camera with FT sensor ever made to date.

That said the current GF5 can be found for a very good price ($449) with X lens and new on eBay US in [shoplink 36107 ebay]Black (Click here)[/shoplink] and [shoplink 36108 ebay]White (Click here)[/shoplink].To get notified on further eBay US price drop login and save this search on Slidoo (Click here). New Metabones MFT adapter makes the magic: your lens faster, wider and sharper!

Share

It’s Monday Morning and this news will shock you and you wake you up! :)
Metabones just announced the new “Speed Booster” Adapter that makes any FF or APS-C (and not MFT!) lens faster, wider and sharper! Philip Bloom posted the news as first and explained how it works:

The Metabones ‘Speed Booster’ is a 0.71 x focal reducer, that will effectively turn your full frame 50mm f/1.8 lens into a 35mm f/1.2 lens. Note, doing so (as a guide) will increase the aperture of that lens by one stop. It will be available in January 2013 from Metabones’ web site http://www.metabones.com and its worldwide dealer network for US$599 / £372 plus shipping and applicable taxes and duties

The adapter reduces the image circle of FF or APS-C lenses and both will cover the MFT sensor area. The only not so good things about the lens are you can use only APS-C or FF lenses and not MFT or FT lenses!

Here is an image that shows you how it works:

The image circle gets reduced and this actually doesn’t decrease the image quality!

And here is a video sample shot by Philip on a NEX camcorder (APS-C):

Take some time to read Philip Bloom post and than let me know:

How much do you like that new adapter?
