Did you read the text on the image on top? It has been taken from the back page of next week’s Amateur Photographer magazine. And Olympus higligted the letters “O” and “M” :) You can see a full size image of the back page here: http://minus.com/mxvrbfbS1#1.

The digital [shoplink 28222 ebay]OM styled[/shoplink] m43 camera is going to be announced the second week of February! Don’t miss to visit 43rumors the next days. [shoplink 28264 ebay][/shoplink]

The very first SLR magic 12mm f/1.6 lens is on auction on [shoplink 28264 ebay]eBay (Click here)[/shoplink]. This is quite a good lens (I tested one) but I still do’t know where you can buy it online. The lens is 2/3 of stops faster than the Olympsu 12mm lens. The SLR magic has a smooth aperture ring that will appeal filmmakers. The Olympus lens has AF an a better image quality. And, at leats in USA it’s getting soem interesting price drops at Amazon (Click here).

P.S.: The new SLR Magic 12-36×50 ED Spotting Scope for mFT is also available [shoplink 27827 ebay]eBay (Click here)[/shoplink].

First Olympus 12-50mm in Europe. 12mm for $704 at Amazon (and pancake X still missing).

Share

I spotted the very first Olympus 12-50mm weather selaed Olympus lens at Foto Hans Keuzakamp in Holland. It’s certainly a nice looking lens despite the not so stellar specs. Wonder how it will look on my next digital OM camera :) If you are not from Holland you can rpeorder the lens at Adorama (Click here) and Amazon UK (Click here).

USA Deal: There has been another price dorp on the 12mm Olympus lens which is available at Amazon for $704 (Click here).

MISSING in USA: After four months the 14-42mm X lens still has never been in Stock in US stores! No way to find it at Amazon (Click here) and I guess you can wait even longer for the new GX1+14-42mm X kit (Click here). Really don’t knwo why Panasonic USA is that slow. It’s available since months here in Europe!

Samsung wants to partner with Olympus

Share

As you know Olympus officially stated that they are seeking for a “friendly investor to make a minority investment and help revive its business after a $1.7 billion accounting scandal erupted in October“. And according to sources from Reuters: “South Korea’s Samsung Electronics is open to forging an alliance with Japan’s troubled Olympus CorpSouth Korea’s Samsung Electronics is open to forging an alliance with Japan’s troubled Olympus Corp“. Also the “Private equity firm TPG Capital is willing to invest about $1 billion in Japan’s” (Source: Reuters).

Samsung expressly said that they don’t want to acquire Olympus but build a partnership with it. This to me sounds not bad at all. It would allow Olympus to remain independent and to gain potentially terrific partner. Samsung can deliver OLED and Viewfinder technology, sensor fabrication and more. And Samsung is desperately in need to revive their camera business! NX sales are terrible bad and they even had to delay the NX20 (there was price drop) launch to avoid another flop. Samsung could join the m43 coalition with Olympus, and probably develop new (fullframe?) systems for the future. What do you think?

P.S.: I think Samsung cameras are not that bad and the lins lineup is quite good. See the full NX stuff here: [shopcountry 28258].

OM system becomes 40 years old!

Share

[shoplink 28221 ebay][/shoplink] The very first [shoplink 28221 ebay]Olympus M-1[/shoplink], announced back in 1972.

You know what happens in 2012? The Olympus OM system becomes forty years old. From Wikipedia:
The system was introduced by Olympus in 1972, more than a decade after Nikon, Canon, and other manufacturers had established their own SLR ranges. The range was designed by Yoshihisa Maitani, chief designer for Olympus, and his staff. The nucleus of the system was a series of compact bodies divided into a professional series and a later consumer-orientated series. The first model introduced was the all-mechanical M-1, which after pressure from Leica was renamed OM-1.
And what do you think is Olympus going to do to remember the OM? :) Maitani would be proud to know that finally the digital OM is coming!
One more thing: The Hong Kong invitation text said that Olympus will release also a “new line of products“. I wouldn’t go to far with your imagination. My guess (no rumor yet) is that there will be OM related “special products”. Let’s see if I am right.

Here is a list of all OM cameras (click on name to see them on eBay)

New Olympus interview, working on new prime lenses! And nobody else wants to join m43 :(

The new Sigma lenses on Olympus cameras (Source: Personal-view)

Dave from Imaging Resource (Click here) interviewed MR. Terada from Olympus. Some interesting points:
1) Camera work isn’t affected by the Olympus fee scandal: “we are working usually. Nothing special.”
2) Because fo the Thai flood consequences there are production problems especially for the E-P3. Not Olympus itself is having problems but some of their suppliers: “we cannot fulfill the whole demand from the market at this moment.
3) Olympus is now working on new prime lenses: “we already almost fill up the zoom lens line-up. Then, now we are concentrating on single focal lens line-up.
4) Olympus asked other companies to join the m43 system: “but no success at the moment.
