Mirrorless system camera sales in UK (Source: Amateur Photographer)

Over at MirrorlessRumors I summed up the five possible reasons why Mirrorless struggles to become popular in North American and European countries. Amateur Photographer interviewed Mr. Sykes from Panasonic who explains the main problem was that companies were too much focused on trying to sell a certain volume instead of focusing on educate the customer about advantages of the new mirrorless cameras. That’s why Panasonic is “imploring photography journalists to conduct reviews of CSCs ‘against DSLRs’, rather than testing like with like.

Last year mirrorlesss camera sales in UK dropped by 46,000 units. But there is also a good news reported by Sykes: “Compact system camera is now returning to a period of growth which is really pleasing“.

New Olympus 25mm lens reviews by Pixelmania and Steve Huff.

Share

The Dutch friends from Pixelmania posted the second and larger part of their 25mm MFT lens comparison. And I couldn’t agree more with their conclusion:

All three deliver crisp images, have little distortion, and so on. Yes, the Voigtländer is slightly stronger, the cheaper Olympus, Panasonic sharper in the center, and so on and so forth. The big winner is in our opinion the MFT camera user can choose from three great 25mm lenses.

Steve Huff also posted the full Olympus lens review and writes:

I prefer the Olympus as I am not losing much at all over the Panasonic but I am gaining the small size, the nice price and the overall look that matches my other Olympus primes AS WELL as almost no CA issues. I could live with EITHER lens long-term.

Nokton 42,5mm: Interview with Panasonic developer team and new review.

Share

In less than one month the new Nocticron 42,mm f/1.2 lens will ship at Amazon (March 20) and BHphoto (mid March). And if you want to learn more about the lens DC.watch (google translation here) interviewed the team who designed the Panasonic Leica Nocticron lens. Focus is definitely on blur characteristics but there are also other interesting tidbits:

– Panasonic designed the lens and Leica approved it.
– If there is a demand Panasonic will do a Leica branded zoom lens too.
– During the development Panasonic also considered to make it faster (f/1.0) but the size was too big.
– Curiosity: When asked about a f/0.7 aperture Panasonic said that would be possible but very difficult to make
– If there is a demand for it Panasonic will make more lenses with aperture ring.

And Photoreview (Click here) tested the lens and writes:

For photographers who really need this performance level from a very fast lens that provides excellent depth-of-field control the asking price would probably justify the investment.
It is also among the most solidly built lenses available for the M4/3 system and comes with effective stabilisation, a pleasant-to-use aperture ring and a deep cylindrical lens hood made of sturdy metal. All contribute to making it decent value for your dollars.

Olympus talks about the 12-40mm (non-issue), Sony relation and the one million OM-D they want to sell.

Imaging Resource (Click here) interviewed the Olympus manager. Main focus of their interview was the Stylus 1 compact but there are also some bits of info about other interesting stuff:

1) Olympus answer about the 12-40mm lens breakage reports is:

There have been only two instances of breakage reported with, at that time, 5,000 to 10,000 lenses shipped worldwide. To us, that doesn’t constitute a known issue.

2) Sony partnership:

In answer to your question about the Sony partnership, we don’t have any kind of exchange of technologies. However, we do have a supplier-buyer relationship on some certain devices that we provide to Sony, and that Sony provides to Olympus.

3) Future camera development goals:

First, polishing the technology of the basic functionality of the camera — whether it’s exposure, whether it’s white balance, auto-focus, everything.
Second, we want to provide not only easy uploading of your images or videos to the Internet, but good communication with networked devices or the cloud.

And also Photoreview (Click here) had the pleasure to interview many Olympus managers and the goal they set for the near future is:

to sell one million OM-D cameras with marketing focused primarily in 70 cities worldwide where disposable incomes are high.
