Olympus 12mm Vs Samyang 12mm Video Test from Pier-Yves Menkhoff on Vimeo.

Pier Yves sent us the following Olympus 12mm F/2.0 Vs. Rokinon 12mm F/2.0 comparison:

Before everything, I would like to thank Hervé Danes for the loan of the Olympus 12mm F/2.0 lens. It was not possible with Olympus France. Jonathan Lang and Martina Beckman did not deign to answer to our request of loan. It was the same thing with Marc Rabuteau of Samyang France. This happens frequently in France !!!
In theory and often in practice, there is a difference of quality between a lens at 800 € and another one at 330 €. However, we are not in California. Where is the difference when you live in a gray city ? When we are in the rain in Lyon in winter ? Will we see a real difference ? The shot was made with a Panasonic DMC-GM1 camera on a tripod. I only alternated the lenses for each plan. Recording at 1 080p. No correction at the editing.
When we place side by side the Olympus 12mm F/2.0 and the Rokinon 12mm F/2.0 lenses, the difference is huge. The first is compact, the second is massive. Among the advantages of the Olympus, perfect aperture and autofocus synchronization with Olympus and Panasonic M43 cameras. We note a difference of framing between the two brands. Olympus offers a tighter framework. The Samyang present an alternative advantage: its price. Nearly half of the Olympus. But the difference has a cost. No electronic contact with the body of the camera. All controls are manual. Another aspect can be disabling for every user. The focus ring of the Rokinon lacks flexibility. It is firm. Very firm. The Olympus is dedicated to those for whom AF is a major asset.
At the light of the above pictures, you can decide whether to invest € 320 or € 799 for a 12mm F/2.0 lens. It’s up to you !!
Enjoy…

Olympus wants to launch world’s first Micro Four Thirds “Lens-Camera-Drone”!

Share

opc_project51

Olympus plans to make the first “Lens-Camera-Drone” it’s basically a Micro Four Thirds mount module with integrated sensor where you can attach the rotor on top. There are no info yet if that idea will ever make it into a real mass product. But so far the specs of the module are mentioned by Olympus itself:

Android ios
– 16 megapixel sensor. No info if it’s E-M1 (with PDAF) or E-M5 (without PDAF) alike.
– Connected by WiFi
– takes both stills and videos
Optical / digital zoom, configurable for various shooting parameters
Save Allowed still images in RAW or JPEG format
Micro Four Thirds mount

This could become the smallest drone ever made? Not sure yet that thing can fly really well :) There are other parts that have to be added to make it fly properly!

Back at Photokina Olympus displayed their “squarish” Lens-Camera prototypes. But at the recent Engadget Fes 2014 held at Arts Chiyoda 3331 in Tokyo they displayed a more advanced rounded and very Sony QX alike version. Our reader Alvin (Thanks!) shared those pictures and added some info:

Don’t know much about the specs but it has:
Open SDK for development
Shutter Button on top
Three tripod mounting locations (custom accessories?)
it’s part of the new Olympus Hack & Make program.

The specs are listed ont he Olympus site and are:

There is no info when Olympus will bring those prototypes to the mass market.

How to create a 40 Megapixel photo by 8 frames with sensor shift and processing?

Share

Olympus_pixels

I still do not know how exactly Olympus new sensor shift feature will work. I only know from trusted sources that you shoot up to 40 Megapixel from the 16 Megapixel sensor by combining 8 shots. A readers sent me this with his very personal guess about how this could work:

I am not a source but just a normal E-M5 user, so the information I give is just a suggestion to how Olympus can create a 40 Megapixel photo by 8 frames with sensor shift and processing and has nothing to do with what they have actually done. (I assume the engineers of Olympus are smarter than me.)
The attached illustration show how 8 frames with sensor shift may result in a 32 Megapixel raw photo where the pixels are arranged diagonally with all color information is recorded in each pixel position. This color information can then be rearranged to a normal photo through processing. The resolution of the photo depend on the chosen resolution in the processing and is therefore not the actual resolution of the sensor, but with all color information in all the recorded pixel positions, my guess is that the end result will be just as good as a 40 Megapixel sensor where the color information need to be calculated by interpolation between the pixels.
If you find the illustration and explanation useful, you are free to use it for your webpage, but make it clear that this is not a rumor, just a suggestion to how it could be done. Also, I want to be anonymous even though I write to you with my real name.

Hope sources can confirm or deny his “tech-guess” soon :)
