(FT3) Panasonic might have a product announcement in late August…unsure if it’s for MFT…

I am starting to get info about multiple announcements from Panasonic:

  1. They will have an announcement in late August. I am not sure what this will be about but it’s likely that this is for new S lenses
  2. In September there should be an announcement related to MFT. It should be for at least one camera…G880 or something else?

If you have any info about what’s coming drop me a message using the contact form on the op of the right sidebar or contact me at 43rumors@gmail.com. Thanks!

E-M5III rumor summary:
Announcement in late Summer (99% certain)
Same E-M1II sensor with 121 cross-type phase detection pixels. (60% certain)
New processing engine (90% certain)
Lighter, more plasticky but still weather sealed body (60% certain)
Same BLS-50 battery of the PEN and E-M10 camera series (60% certain)

I have been told that unlike the current E-M5II camera the soon to be announced new E-M5III will use the same BLS-50 battery of the PEN and E-M10 camera series

(FT5) Panasonic is developing a new TOF Micro Four Thirds sensor for a new PERFECT autofocus system!

I got this from a reliable source:
Panasonic is working to on their ToF sensor from the Vivo Nex Dual phone to implement it on a new AF system in their MFT line!
But I am not sure when it will go live (gh6/7/8)
Time of Flight measures accurate distances to subjects, so tap on touchscreen for subject to focus on, get an almost instant ToF reading to distance, quickly move lens focus system to where it needs to be for that distance (no contrast “wobble”, no overshooting, pinpoint accurate video tracking focus, etc). In theory, it beats “hybrid” (ie PDAF + CDAF like in the Sony/Fuji) because it eliminates the need for any back and forward movements that are required by CDAF calculations! It also eliminates PDAF sensor banding that Sony cleverly hides (but Canon and Nikon haven’t mastered the cover up quite as well, it can be seen in shadow recovery). Panasonic will use MFT as testing and maturing grounds for new developments (ToF AF, organic sensors, etc), much like Olympus does for their MFT > medical devices ;)
This sounds like the holy grail of autofocus! No PDAF artifacts and superfast autofocus system!

(FT3) New E-M5III has lighter, more plasticky but still weather sealed body

One source told me that Olympus has designed the new E-M5III body to be:
– Lighter
– more plasticky (to save weight)
– still weather sealed
Let’s hope that by using more plastic they will also reduce the price :)

Two years ago Panasonic said they could launch the first 8K camera in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. But this ain’t going to happen. The new target is 2020. Nikkan reports (google translated text):

Panasonic is the prospect of the 2022 year, which will be held the Beijing Olympic Winter Games and Paralympic, and ultra-high-definition 8K video, and for the business consumer for a digital camera with a slow-motion playback function of the high-definition 4K (consumer) throw into. Digital cameras are popular for smartphones in consumer applications, and for Chinese manufacturers such as surveillance cameras …
