(FT3) The Olympus E-3 successor will be the first Olympus modular camera

Easy folks! The rumor has still “FT3” value only (which means there is a 50% chance the rumor will become true). But according to one trusted and one new source the Olympus E-3Olympus E-3Olympus E-3Olympus E-3Olympus E-3Olympus E-3Olympus E-3Olympus E-3Olympus E-3Olympus E-3Olympus E-3Olympus E-3 successor will become Olympus first “modular” camera. The E-5 (or E-4 or something else?) will be truly a revolutionary camera. The goal behind this new camera is to provide an ultimate solution for both FourThirds and MicroFourThirds users.

The new source told me that I should “think the Olympus OM4tiOlympus OM4tiOlympus OM4tiOlympus OM4tiOlympus OM4tiOlympus OM4tiOlympus OM4tiOlympus OM4tiOlympus OM4tiOlympus OM4tiOlympus OM4ti with modular sensor box assembly“. The only modular (non-mediumformat) camera to date is the Ricoh GXR. But we believe Olympus will provide a slightly different solution.

One of my trusted sources confirmed that the next High-End camera will be modular but he didn’t specify exactly how it will work. Sounds like you will be able to change the mount and probably there will be EVF and OVF modules.

(FT4) Panasonic LX5, GH2, GF2, AG-AF100 and one more surprise?

Few days ago we told you what could come next from Olympus. In the meanwhile some of our sources confirmed our Olympus camera roadmap. Now the question is: What’s coming from Panasonic?

Let’s start with the most reliable rumors:
1) The Panasonic GH2 will be unveiled at Photokina. New sensor design, more megapixel (14?), 1080/50-60p, AVCHD 24Mbit/s.
2) We are also almost certain that the Panasonic LX3 successor (the LX5?) will be announced at Photokina. It will not use the interchangeable MicroFourThirds mount.
3) The Panasonic AG-AF100 m4/3 camcorder will be ready for the market by end of the year (certainly not at Photokina!)

And here the rumors we recieved from good sources but that still have to be confirmed by other sources:
1) The Panasonic GF2 will not come at Photokina! According to our source it will be announced by end 2010/early 2011. I was told that this is the current roadmap form Panasonic but may the competition will force Panasonic to release the camera earlier than expected. The GF2 will have a built-in Viewfinder (read our detailled GF2 rumor)!
2) Panasonic is also working on a ultr-slim m4/3 camera. But we do not have any concrete idea when it will be announced :(

In summary:
– no new camera until Photokina
– GH2 and LX5 almost sure to come at Photokina
– Panasonic is working on two GF cameras. Both could be announced after Photokina (or announced at Photokina but available later)
– new lenses like the 14mm f/2.5 will be announced in June-July (also before Photokina)

A user just sent me follwing text:
Panasonic Firmware upgrade and non Panasonic Batteries.
I have a battery (purchased through Amazon UK from a German supplier) that worked in my G1 with firmware 1.4 – which means it includes the feature that identifies it as a genuine battery.
I can confirm that this battery still works with the G1 firmware 1.5 and my GH1 with firmware 1.3. It may be that this won’t be the case with all batteries that worked with G1 v1.4, but there is a fair chance. NOTE THAT THIS ONLY APPLIES TO BATTERIES KNOWN TO WORK WITH G1 1.4 (not earlier).
However, I strongly recommend that you upgrade your firmware with a genuine Pansonic battery in the camera – I have no idea what might happen if the camera does not like the battery – and try your other batteries afterwards!

(FT4) Olympus E-5 and new PEN at Photokina

As you have noticed things have been quiet for a while now. During that time we tried to understand why Olympus didn’t announce any FourThirds camera. Months ago we told you that we were almost certain that new FourThirds cameras would be introduced. What we learned is that in fact our rumors were NOT wrong. The Olympus E-5 was ready for the launch since the end of 2009. Also a new mid-range FourThirds camera was ready for the launch in April. In both cases Olympus made a very last minute decision to not unveil the cameras. According to our sources Olympus discussed a lot about the future development of FourThirds and that probably caused the last minute delay.
So what did Olympus choose?
The Olympus E-5 is now undergoing a new upgrade. I was told that the Olympus E-5 will be released at Photokina in September along with the next MicroFourThirds camera. The Olympus E-5 will have completely new features (some of them never seen in any DSLR camera before!!!). You should again take a look at that patent: double simultaneus focus system. I “suspect” this will be one of the new features inside the E-5.
It is also very likely that the camera will be able to record high-quality video.

So will there be no new camera between now and Photokina?
According to one new source Olympus could unveil the mid-range camera in June. It should be the A6xx. But that’s still to be confirmed.

What I am almost certain about is that Olympus will announce a new Olympus PENOlympus PENOlympus PENOlympus PENOlympus PENOlympus PENOlympus PENOlympus PENOlympus PENOlympus PENOlympus PENOlympus PEN at Photokina. And I also believe there will be one more MicroFourThirds camera (The famous High-End camera) by the end of the year.

Let’s make a summary:
FT4= Olympus E-5 with double focus system and video at Photokina
FT4= One more PEN at Photokina
FT2= A new mid-range FourThirds camera in June
FT2= A new High-End MFT camera after Photokina (Oktober-November)

Reminder: (FT=FourThirds)
FT4= Rumor from good known sources which have been often right in the past
FT2= Rumor from new sources

And what about new lenses? I was told that Olympus is working to deliver the lenses we need. I expect many new MicroFourThirds zooms and primes to be announced at Photokina. I have no news about FourThirds lenses :(

Possible future new MicroFourThirds lens list:

Panasonic
– 100-300/4.0-5.6 OIS
– Fisheye 8/3.5
– 14/2.5 pancake

and here comes the future Olympus lenses list:
– 40-150
– 70-300
– 12/2.5
– 20/1.7
– 8mm
– 50mm f/2.0
