An interesting story about the E-5

I have been very silent about the upcoming Olympus E-5. I didn’t give you much news about that camera because we had received conflicting reports. Finally my sources allowed me to tell you why I had received such different rumors.

As I told you in April Olympus made a very last minute decision to not announce any new low and middle class FourThirds DSLR (->The cameras were ready for the worldwide launch!).
In case of the E-5, Olympus tested different prototypes (with different sensors, features and designs). Of course it is normal that a company reviews different camera versions, but what I am telling you is that they only decided a few weeks ago(!) how the camera will look! Even the name wasn’t sure until few weeks ago.

An example? According to our sources Olympus had two prototypes, one working with the Kodak sensor and one working with the new Panasonic sensor. We don’t know what sensor has been choosen but we suspect that Olympus will use the new Panasonic sensor

1) We believe the E-5 will be announced mid-September (14 or 15)
2) The E-5 will be in Stock months later (by end of the year). Reason for the delay could be the new Panasonic sensor which had a longer than expected development history.
3) We don’t expect the new sensor to have an electronic global shutter but two of our sources told us that we should expect a intermediate solution (?)
4) More Megapixels -> 14-16MPX
5) UPDATE: One source told me that it has a more current design (E-30 and E-3) and another source that is very similar to the [shoplink 14878]Olympus OM4ti[/shoplink] design (we still need to confirm that part of the rumor). I guess they saw two different prototypes :(
6) A special mount solution (could also use MicroFourThirds lenses?)

We hope to get 99% proof detailled rumors soon!

Thanks!

(FT4) Olympus: rumor roundup before Photokina

Let’s try to get an idea on what could come from Olympus at Photokina!

The Olympus E-3 successor:

We are sure the camera will be announced in mid-September. The camera is not a modular camera (that is something we should see in 2011), it’s a FourThirds camera. We are also sure that the innovation has to do with the camera-mount. Many patents have already shown us innovative adapters that could be used on that camera. The camera will feature a new Panasonic sensor with 14-16 Megapixel and gapless microlens design.

The next PEN:
We got rumors about two possible Pen. One with built-in EVF and a High-End MFT camera. We don’t know if both or only one camera will be announced. There is nothing certain here (for now). Just my speculation: maybe we will see only one camera that has built-in EVF and is defacto a High-End MFT? Also that camera could use the same Panasonic sensor. What’s certain is that Olympus is heavily developing a new faster autofocus.

The next lenses:
We believe that we will not see any new FourThirds lens at Photokina. This makes the FourThirds camera with the “special-mount” even more interesting. If the rumors are correct… how will Olympus convince us to buy the new 43 camera when there is no new lens?
We have no doubt that at least four new MicroFourThirds lenses will be announced. But that’s not all, it is very likely that even more lenses will be announced at Photokina (but released months after). Maybe Olympus will release a new lens roadmap that will disclose those lenses.

We also received other rumors but from unreliable or new sources. We need to confirm those rumors before posting anything about it!

Help us and send us your rumors to 43rumors@gmail.com…Thanks!

(FT3) UPDATE: The 4 new Olympus MFT lenses (+ patent)

Dear readers, last week we told you that Olympus will launch at least 4 new MicroFourThirds lenses (That rumor came from very good sources).

Now we have a small update (from a different source):

The two primes should be the 12mm f/2.8 and a 50mm (f/2.0??)
The two zooms should be the 40-150mm and 70-300mm.

In the meanwhile two new Olympus patents do discloses the aperture of the 40-150mm lens + a completely new 30mm-150mm lens:

  • Zuiko Digital ED 40-150mm F3.5-4.5
  • Zuiko Digital ED 30-150mm F3.3-4.2

Panasonic will launch a “3D conversion lens” for camcorder (and soon also for MicroFourThirds?)

Panasonic will launch a new 3D conversion lens on July 28. The leaked picture do show the lens attached on the SDT750 camcorder. The interesting part for us is that few months ago we were told that Panasonic was working on 3D conversion lenses for MicroFourThirds. I don’t believe they will announce that on July 28. But Photokina is getting closer…
