New GH4 video test roundup

Quality difference there is between a GH4 4K and GX7 AVCHD video at Vimeo (Click here). But it would have been more useful to compare it on the same subject :(
Panasonic GH4: Fun with VFR; Slow/Fast-Mo in Shibuya, Tokyo (by Akihabara on Youtube).

Andrew:We got hands on with a gh4 for a few hours and shot this comparison video with all the cameras we could wrangle (gh3, gh4, 7d, 5d3, c100):

Then, for fun, i took 2 of the 4k locked-down static shots and did pan and scan in a SD timeline to see how much reframing I could do on a 4k image:

Nocticron is the best Micro Four Thirds lens ever tested by DxOmark!

DxO (Click here) just published the full Nocticron 42,5mm f/1.2 lens test. It will surprise no one here that it became the best MFT lens ever tested by DxO. But the margin to the Olympus 75mm and 45mm lenses isn’t high and the price difference on the opposite is considerable. DxO writes:

Although this is a bold step for Panasonic, the price is a going to be a stumbling block for the majority, particularly as it has to sway users away from the diminutive and accessibly priced Olympus 45mm f1.8.
That model is both discrete and a very good performer, although it’s someway behind in build and in outright optical quality. Looking at the line-up as a whole it’s uncomfortably close to 45mm and the longer 75mm f1.8, yet there seems little doubt it will tempt enthusiasts looking for an edge in performance and to the advantages of returning to an aperture ring.

Expensive? Yes. But if you want the best lens this is the way to go!

You can buy the lens at Amazon US (Click here), Adorama (Click here) and BHphoto (Click here). In UK at Wexphotographic (Click here). In Germany at Redcoon (Click here), Technikdirekt (Click here).

Olympus 25mm and 12-40mm lens reviews at ePhotozine.

ePhotozine is busy testing new Olympus lenses:

1) Olympus M.Zuiko 25mm f/1.8 ED Premium Lens Review (Click here).

This lens is certainly capable of producing excellent quality images, with sharpness being excellent in the centre of the frame from maximum aperture. It’s well built, lightweight and reasonably compact. The price of this lens may limit its appeal a little, even though it’s not really an expensive lens.

2) Olympus M.Zuiko ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens Review (Click here):

This lens delivers outstanding sharpness through much of the zoom range at maximum aperture and sports a robust, dust and splash proof build, all while remaining compact and lightweight. The excellent performance of this lens will certainly win it many fans, that’s for sure.

12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens at Amazon, Adorama, BHphoto, AmazonDE (viaDL), Amazon ES (via DL).

Leica 15mm gest tested by DxO. Is sharper than the Olympus 17mm lens.

DxOmark (Click here) just published the Leica 15mm f/1.7 lens test. The lens is very sharp and the only major flaw is the chromatic aberration which you can correct anyway in post processing or in camera if you use it on a Panasonic. Greta tiny lens!

The lens will ship in 2-4 weeks according to Amazon.

Top lens info: Sigma 50mm ART lens matches the best Zeiss Otus.

Sigma is one of the third-party lens companies making lenses for the Micro Four Thirds system. And I guess you already know about their most recent “ART” lens series. Well, let’s hope they will make some new ART lens for MFT lens too because their recently released 50mm f/1.4 ART lens for DSLR mounts shows a quite impressing quality! SLRgear tested the lens (read here) and the Sigma manages to almost match the $4,000 Zeiss Otus performance:

While the Zeiss does show better performance in the corners at ƒ/1.4 on a full-frame camera, the other optical performance characteristics are pretty evenly matched.

The Sigma sells for DSLR system only ($949 at BH). But I hope Sigma will make a more compact designed version for the MFT system!

New GH4 review by Akihabara. Philip Bloom prefers it over the Sony A7s.

Early bird sunrise [Lumix GH4 anamorphic 4K] from Martin Wallgren on Vimeo.

Martin Wallgren (video on top): “A short cinematic piece shot with a pre-production GH4 and vintage Sankor 16C 2X anamorphic adapter on OM 50/1.8 lens. Shot in 4K DCI and edited in a 1080p timeline in FCPX, I wanted to see how the 2X anamorphic held up in terms of sharpness with all the detail in the 4K footage. Really pleased with the results. Ungraded footage! Enjoy!

GH4 review at Akihabaranews:

“Panasonic has (arguably once again) done what no other camera manufacturer seems keen to do, and they’ve delivered an easy to use, madly capable true hybrid photography camera that can go toe to toe with specialist systems in both stills and video. On top of that, the GH4 delivers quality at a price point that makes the more traditional, expensive products that are associated with ‘professionals’ seem like a complete waste of money for all but the smallest minority who truly need that extra performance.”

Philip Bloom about the new Sony A7s:

It’s just a real shame there is no internal 4K recording…now that would be mind-blowing . That means the camera with a sensor half the size of this, the Panny GH4 stills has the edge on 4K recording over it due to it’s ability to record internally. With a Metabones speed booster (still no EF mount) you can make that sensor give you a field of view not far off S35/ APS-C.
