a little bit of everything…

Video on top: Looks like the Nocticron is going around the world to participate different expositions. I hope it’s also going to be around the “shop-worlds” for purchase soon!

Peter:I looked at the noise in my E-PL3 sensor from a 60 sec exposure.  image (not shown) looks similar to E-M1 noise pattern.  I don’t think anyone else has put up a histogram of the noise.  I’ll talk to some colleagues of mine about this when I get in to work on Monday. http://electro-garbage.blogspot.com/2013/11/the-noise-issue-that-has-come-to-light.html

Berneck:Good article about how shallow depth of field is being overused, and not needed for an excellent photo.: http://www.dpmag.com/how-to/shooting/go-deep.html

Steven:thought this might be interesting for the community. I contacted Olympus asking them, if a firmware update is planned for the OMD EM1 (concerning frame-rate for movie mode). Their answer is below. You are welcome to publish the forwarded e-mail below:

Dear Mr XXX,
Thank you for your email.

Frame rate is pre-set and given by the file format  .MOV and there is no way to influence it.
As for today we have no info about upcoming firmware, but as we were said the movie issues has been mentioned.

Kind regards,”

Lee:Not rumor but I just saw the news you have posted regarding EM1 long exposures, it happens to Panasonic GX1 as well, and those little speckles will be gone if the NR is turned on. I have written about similar issue sometimes ago in my blog –
http://9shift.blogspot.com/2012/02/lumixgx1-night-photography-field-test.html
No intention to drive traffic to my blog but would like to point out exact same issue I see happens to both GX1 and EM1, If the camera sensor has this problem, practically two things can’t be done – long exposure timelapse and startrails because you need to turn on NR and that breaks the interval.
Previously I have tested GF1 and this issue is unseen. I’m curious about GX7/GM1. By the way I don’t think Panasonic fixes the problem ;)

Alan (video on top):I’ve found over the years that the Tele – Conversion or Crop Mode on the G -Series of Lumix cameras really comes in handy if you want to extend the zoom range of your lenses and even helps on the other macro end of shooting. Here’s an example of how it can turn a lens that has a short focusing distance like the Voigtlander 25mm f0.95 into almost a macro.

Markus:Perhaps someone may be interested in my blog where i have quite alot of phots taken with the em-5 and CV Nokton 17.5 and 42.5.
Alot of casual photos and some more edited and with a little more thought and work behind them: http://www.mtyskfoto.se/?cat=10

Gonzalo:I recently finished shooting and editing my first Music Video with the Lumix GH3 and the Olympus M. Zuiko 45mm for a couple of very talented girls. I hope you enjoy it! (More technical info in the video’s description): https://vimeo.com/74102241

Desy:Hi there, just wanted to share a short film with you that we shot with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera.  We used the Panasonic 12-35mm 2.8 about 80% of the time and 20% with the 25mm 1.4. https://vimeo.com/77648980

Seb:I don’t know if you saw my latest film, a sharp pocket anamorphic set on OM-D E-M5 with Qioptiq Linos MeVis-C 35mm f1.6 C-mount lens and my baby Berthiot Hypergonar 1.75X anamorphic lens: https://vimeo.com/77265744

LaDP:I wanted to share a recent piece of work that we shot completely with GH3s and Voigtlander/SLR Magic primes. Its a music video for the band Capital Cities, who have had some decent success with their last two releases. I DP’d the shoot and chose the GH3s because of their combination of size, wight, and lens choice. Those primes I mentioned are great video tools. The editor and post production crew both commented positively on the look of footage and how it didn’t feel like an HDSLR – or at least it didn’t look like the 5D footage they normally see. Nice to change it up every now and then. Anyhow, the video went live a few days ago, and I thought the 4/3 community would like to check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFynzpSwW8E

Brian:i have a small 12-40 lens review, infrared with the em1 and full frame vs micro 4/3 blogs that i want to see if you can post the links the next time you post ” a little bit of everything” www.leadinglinephotography.com/blog

Wasim:I thought you might be interested in sharing with your readers a piece I did about Hurricane Sandy in the Breezy Point/Roxbury area of New York (next to where all those homes burned down). I shot the piece almost entirely with a Panasonic GH3 and a bunch of lenses (Oly 75mm 1.8, 45 mm 1.8 and Panasonic 20mm and 14-140). I used a Nikon D600 to shoot the photos right after it happened last year, but I found that using a smaller kit like the GH3 and whatever lenses I had that day helped me move around this very tight-knit, private community with much greater ease than my larger gear. People opened up to me a lot easier when I had a camera that wasn’t as intimidating. Really helped make the piece happen. In any case, here’s a link to the piece: https://vimeo.com/76846036

Izhar:A date with the Zookeeper’s Boys is a short I made in London leading up to Danish band Mew’s concert. https://vimeo.com/79295185 Shot with my hacked GH2, using Lumix 7-14mm, 20mm, 14-140mm and Canon FD 50mm/1.4 lenses. Edited with FCPX.
Anonymous: “Hello there, thought your readers may like this video I made. It is a short mini-doc on a street artist friend of mine. It was shot using two GH3’s. The main interview was shot with the Lumix 12-35 f2.8 and a Rokinon 8mm fish eye on an automated slider. The timelapse was shot with the 12-35 and most of the B-Roll shots are Canon FD lens: the 28mm f2, 50mm f1.4, and the 85mm f1.8. I really love the Canon FD lenses. They have much less contrast then the Lumix lens so I end getting a much flatter picture profile which is what I prefer for color grading. For the intro POV shots I used a GoPro. The video was color graded using FilmConvert. Hope you enjoy! ABCArtAttack: The Art of Bryce Chisholm from Bryon Evans Films: http://bryonevansfilms.com/?p=1450

Panasonic 4K mirrorless camera in development! (says Nikkei.com).

Nikkei just released some info about the 2014 Panasonic camera strategy:

– Panasonic will launch five new (fixed lens) compact cameras. That’s exactly the half amount of the cameras released in 2013
– These compact cameras will cost around $300 or more. Focus is on high-magnification zoom cameras
– Main focus of the company will be on the mirrorless interchangeable market.
– Panasonic will also launch a device capable of capturing 4K ultra-high-definition video  (it’s now in development).
– Panasonic is working to increase the sales of lenses (also for surveillance cameras)
– Panasonic anticipates a second consecutive year of losses for its digital camera business in fiscal 2013 on the back of weak sales of compact offerings. Global digital camera sales are expected to shrink by over 2 million units this fiscal year to about 4 million.

Mirrorless strategy summary: In short this means Panasonic will now focus on making a breakthrough in the more profitable high-end amateur or pro market. A 2.500 Euro “cheap” GH4 with 4K recording and modular design is the one camera that should allow this. On the other side the focus goes on the supertiny GM mirrorless camera and lens development. Overall it’s going to be a challenging time for all digital camera makers. The economic crisis and the “natural” slow down of the digital camera market are hitting hard on all companies balance.

Have fun with the GM1 camera-lens Match Simulator! It’s also one of the cameras of the year for Dpreview.

You can now have a lot of fun by virtually combining the tiny Panasonic GM1 with a lot of FT or MFT lenses using the Special matching Simulator (Click here). Too bad the simulator only shows small size images! To see some bigger images of Gm1 lens combination click over at ePhotozine.

This is also one of the best cameras of the year according to Dpreview:

“Here’s where the GM1 is set apart from other cameras I’ve tested: I want to have it with me, even when I’m heading out of the apartment to run errands, or go to the coffee shop, and I don’t have any specific intentions of Going Shooting. I might just see a nice shot and the GM1 will get it. When I take my DSLR out on these kinds of trips, I’m acutely aware that it’s there the whole time.”

A report about a big GM1 presentation day in Japan can be read at DC.watch (google tranlsation here). New GM1 review at Lesnumeriques (google translation here).

GM1 preorder list:
In US at Amazon, Adorama, BHphoto.
In Europe at Amazon Germany, Wex Germany, Amazon UK, Fotohanskeuzekamp, Cyberphoto Sweden and Wex UK.

New HolyManta VND

HolyManta VND from Holymanta on Vimeo.

I just got that new press release about a new HolyManta Micro Four Thirds product. And be sure to check out the video on top to see how this works!

PRESS TEXT:

The all-new HolyManta VND is finally available! With this lens adapter (initially for Canon EF lenses) setting manual exposure has newer been easier and quicker. Video filming has always been for restricted compared to photography in terms of exposure – due to the shutter which most often should be set to a 180 degrees angle. The built-in variable ND filter allows you set the perfect exposure in second without taking your eyes from the viewfinder, and inserting the dust protected filter now takes less then a second instead of almost minutes as with external filters.
For more info, please visit www.holymanta.com or send your question to info@holymanta.com

All the best

Really smart idea!

Olympus 12-40mm Lens is “in short supply”. But first lenses are alreayd shipping in US (Amazon and eBay)

Olympus Japan just issued an official statement. It says that the demand of the lens has been higher than expected and therefore not all that preordered the lens will get it in time (late November-early December). The lens has still an ETA of December 7 at Amazon US (Click here). But a couple of 43rumors readers luckily told me that their US preorders already shipped! And there is even a first lens auction on [shoplink 42953 ebay]eBay US (Click here)[/shoplink]. So I guess the supply shortage will only affect those of you that will preorder the lens now.

Preorders: Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens at Amazon, Adorama, BHphoto, AmazonDE (viaDL), Amazon ES (via DL).

Olympus president Sasa shares more hints about Sony-Olympus digital camera parynership.

JP (Click here) published an interview with Olympus president Sasa. If google translation didn’t fool me this is what he says:
– Olympus and Sony are working together on the camera and lens front. This means “one-step” integration in the distribution network and camera parts purchases to reduce the costs.
– He confirms the low-end compact camera market is of no more interest for Olympus
– There is room for growth in the Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens market. Olympus expects annual sales number to increase from 75000-80000 to 90000-140000 units.
