We have yet no idea if the Fuji-Panasonic sensor partnership announced in 2013 will ever produce a new MFT or FF sensor. But for sure the sensor promises to deliver some interesting tech. Diglloyd writes today:

There is a new Panasonic/Fujifilm organic sensor which among other things is claimed to have stunning dynamic range, global shutter, electronic ND filter, in-pixel capacitive noise reduction, in-pixel gain switching, and voltage-controlled sensitivity modulation. Rumor is that a Panasonic 8K 36-megapixel chip will be out next year in a real camera. This Panasonic/Fujifilm chip (if real and it seems to be) is the result of the collaboration between Panasonic and Sony announced back in 2013.

The design goals of the Panasonic/Fujifilm chip differ from traditional Sony sensors (primarily in targeting dynamic range), and in so doing appear to offer a distinct and highly attractive alternative to Sony sensors. However, the size of the sensor remains unclear, and the emphasis by Panasonic on various industrial uses makes me wonder if the chip will be capable of generic use in still-photo cameras.

I have no idea…and honestly I doubt it that next year we are going to get a camera with this sensor. But I would be very happy to be proven wrong!

At last Canon announced their new Full Frame mirrorless Canon EOS-R camera (live coverage on CanonWatch). Based on the specs THIS is the camera Panasonic has to beat! Canon clearly made this cameras for youtubers:

1. It has over 5.000 AF points, Dual Pixel AF and EV-6
2. It outputs 10 bits 4:2:2
3. It has a fully articulated screen
4. Focus by wire lenses with some great lenses: 50mm f/1.2 and 28-70mm f/2.0

Panasonic has at least to match these feature and honestly…probably beat them to have a chance in this new market. The new Canon ins’t all good. There are some cons Panasonic can certainly exploit in his favour. Here is the PRO and CONS list via SAR:

Canon PROS:
– World’s fastest autofocus
– Full compatibility with existing EF lenses
– A cool adapter with drop-in filter
– The new EOS-R lenses are focus by wire and have an extra customizable ring
– The new EOS-R lenses are stunning
– It has 10 bit 4:2:2 output just like the Nikon Z
–$2299* for the body only. It will also be sold as a body-and-lens kit with the new RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens for $3399*.

Canon CONS:
– lack of IBIS
– single slot card
– Low battery life: 370 shots
– The EOS R does have eye-AF but only S-AF. (info via Jordan Drake)
– It uses the same “Old” 30MP sensor from the 5D IV (with more phase detection pixels added)
– The cool lenses are expensive: RF 50mm f/1.2L at $2,299, the RF 28-70mm f/2L at $2,999
– Roadmap doesn’t disclose what lenses we can expect
– The dial on the left is just an ON-OFF button
– Canon will not be opening up the RF mount specs to third parties (info via Jordan Drake)
– No AF-C in continuous high drive (slower FPS compared to Sony cameras)
– Still a huge ass crop in 4K recording. Looks the same as 5D IV. Heavy rolling shutter as well. (info via Jordan Drake)
– 1080p does 60fps and not 120fps

Panasonic GH5S Review – 10-bit Greatness

Kevin: “I wanted to take a moment and share with you what I feel to be an important demonstration of the GH5S. There’s a lot of negativity surrounding its size and lack of IBIS but under the right conditions / technique performs incredibly well.
This is a handheld test / demo with the Panasonic GH5S, Lumix 12 – 35mm F2.8 Power I.O.S. shot in 4K 60P captured to the Shogun Inferno in Pro Res LT and conformed to 24P. No warp stabilization has been applied!
Nudges and bumps are virtually non-existent with the smallest degree perceivable in the original 60P content . This has to do with technique, hand placement, and some weight put behind the camera.
The point behind this test is two fold; First it is a demonstration of the GH5S in conjunction with a Power ISO lens to reduce “hand jitter” or “bumps”. The second objective is to demonstrate how adding weight to the camera (less than 5lbs via cage and Atomos Shogun) can be functional as well as reducing jitter.
Some things to note; Yes I’m aware this is effectively “slow mo”, but the native content is smooth. This is how I shoot 90% of my B-Roll, so for me this is all that matters. Second, I own both cameras (GH5 & GH5S). I would never sub the GH5S in a scenario that had less than ideal conditions. For instance, I would never go handheld running with the GH5S, hike, climb, operate on uneven surfaces such as a boat or on a tele lens. You need to know when these cameras are appropriate to use, and when not. I swap these cameras / lenses in and out like a deck of cards, and no one camera is suitable for all work. That said the GH5S can perform beautifully without a gimbal for pushes, pulls, pans, slides, and even shoulder work. I hope you enjoy, and I hope this test / demo enables users to have a better understanding of its capabilities.

Blackmagic has a history of delaying the product shipment start over and over again. And yes, this seems to happen with the new Cinema MFT camera too. Today Bhphoto reports the camera shipment start is expected on October 5. I fear there will be further delays… :(
