(FT5) Some more tidbits about the GX1…(correction LCD resolution is 460k dots).
I am getting some more tidbits about the GX1. There is one important correction. The LCD has 460k dots and not 900k dots! And here are the other small tidbits:
- The GX1 has a metal body
- Panasonic removed the motion-jpeg video format
- The GX1 is a bit smaller than the Panasonic GF1.
I repeat that the GX1 will be announced on November 8 in Japan (and not on October 28 like other rumors website said).
P.S.: I had to create a new Facebook 43rumors fanpage because my old 43rumors account have been closed. The new Facebook policy wants me to create a fanpage instead of a private account with fake anme (43rumors). Hope you will join the new site!!!

Indeed, it’s the true GF1 Successor with nice grip.
It’s really a man-oriented design with the robust shape.
Fixed screen(No tilt),Stereo mic jack and external EVF port
and the Shiny metal buttons, it seems more buttons than G3.

2 years ago |I have already been waiting a year, actually two.
When the GF1 came out I tried one at a local store and liked it. Ended up buying a 7D because I wanted a DSLR first and thought that in one year the GF1 would mature. It never did.
A G3 or GH2 doesn’t make sense for me as I have the 7D, but I am really liking the idea of getting a high end system camera as one to have with me at all times. I think m43 has the potential, especially with the available lenses getting much better, but every time I look it isn’t quite there yet.
I guess we’ll see in about a week what Panasonic has really developed. I could always compromise and save some cash so I at least have something with me.

2 years ago |You’re welcome
Although I myself consider the Zeiss lens to be of a very good quality and not that huge (just a bit longer than it should be), the price is simply too high, plus it is one of just two good lenses of the Sony system (another one being the 85mm f/2.8). So I am too satisfied with the choice of the m43 system.
Bob B.
2 years ago |The other thing going on…MFT vs NEX…if I buy a Leica-branded Pany 50mm it is tack sharp and performs well…It isn’t built like the real deal but they got the important part right ..AND for $600. OK..go to the NEX Zeiss-branded made by Sony …what is up with that…I own a Zeiss 21mm f/2.8ZE for my canon FF…Sharper than a razor…actually one of the sharpest lens formulas EVER. The NEX “Zeiss” isn’t tack sharp (no excuses…from Sony or Zeiss please…and that is their best lens) and its $1200….Martin, you are telling my why its has to be huge…ok.I am down with that….but the other two points price and quality are completely unacceptable. Let’s put it this way…Sony…you did a great job of letting me be totally satisfied with the mirrorless system I have.
I appreciate the physics lesson..this is making me happy with my gear choices!!!!!!
THANKS!

2 years ago |That’s true. Whopping €300 for the 14mm pancake, and €370 for the GF2+14mm kit. That’s insane really. Anyway i’ll consider that after the GX1 announcement.
Narretz
2 years ago |Well, the rumor from EOS HD is a little more than a month old. At this time, we all still thought the GX1 / GF7 would have a internal EVF, a new sensor and whatnot.
What I don’T understand is why Panasonic delayed the camera. I thought it was because they updated some of the features or components, but it does not make any sense if the specs are true – only if they wanted to produce many in advance to have them in stock quickly, for once.
Still: meh.
Martin
2 years ago |> Is the same true for MFT…
Less so. The back focal distance/ sensor diagonal ratio is more reasonable in case of the m43 system. That’s why lenses like the Panny 20mm can be flat and still have a very good optical performance.
> I guess because the sensor is smaller the lenses can be smaller?
One thing is the lens length, which depends on several factors (but generally seems to be shorter in case of m43 when compared to Nex, for instance), another thing is the lens diameter.
That also depends on several things, but generally, if you want comparable DOF, you need the same entrance pupil size, thus a comparable lens diameter.
So the statement ‘Smaller sensor = smaller lenses’ is a bit of a common myth. They may be smaller, but then they are usually not comparable..
Martin
2 years ago |> Panasonic’s sensor technology is not far behind Sony’s, if at all
It certainly is somewhat behind. Both in quantum efficiency and read noise. Resolution has very little to do with it (if you compare comparable images, i.e. scaled to the same size).
But of course, the sensor area is the most important factor. Anyhow, we would need Panasonic to be THE champion in sensor technology. Who knows, they may work on it – let’s hope so
Bob B.
2 years ago |interesting…so be cause the lens can be closer to the sensor..it creates a physics problem that impacts the way the lens has to be design???? Is the same true for MFT…I guess because the sensor is smaller the lenses can be smaller? I just purchased the new Panasonic 45-175mm and although it is not a high-end lens..it is INCREDIBLY compact (plus internal-zooming and focusing..keeping the size…small, small and small)..it is what having a compact, mirrorless camera is all about.
If what you are telling me is true…I will never switch to NEX and also will continue to own my extensive full-frame DSLR system and am extremely happy that I invested in MFT to compliment (no replace) that system. In my camera world…there is no place for a NEX camera …it is just this awkward, half-baked ugly duckling.

Why neither Olympus or Panasonic have used this sensor to a greater potential on a camera like we all speak of is INSANE!

Martin
2 years ago |I’m afraid that in case of Nex, a pancake is (and always will be) equal to crappy optical performance due to the extremely short back focal distance compared to the sensor diagonal size. Marginal FOV areas in particular suffer from this problem (where off-axis microlenses are are a partial solution, to be fair).
For the good optical performance of Sony’s system, it needs relatively big (=tall) lenses. The 24mm Zeiss lens is a case in point.

i think you can appreciate that some people like to buy within a product line. it is why they bought within that product line to start with. i bought a gf1 , and i love it. i dont need a panasonic ´dslr´ type body, like a g3 or gh2, as i have other cameras to fulfill that need. (i also dont need a built in viewfinder, i am happy with the external, i just want it updated to higher res so focussing is easier, but i prefer an external one and the more modular approach)
i just need something to eventually upgrade my gf1, preferably with 16bit instead of 12bit output.
at the moment i am still happy with the gf1, but it would be nice to see a product within the same series that i think i could aspire to moving on to in the next year or so.

2 years ago |Panasonic’s sensor technology is not far behind Sony’s, if at all. Smaller, denser sensors will always perform somewhat worse.
As far as low light performance goes, the 24MP sensor APS-C sensor from Sony performs more or less in line with Panasonic’s latest generation sensors.
m43′s smaller size (sensor and lenses, if not body) comes at a penalty.
Boooo!
2 years ago |I don’t think it’s that different… Both Apple and Panasonic/Olympus keep selling small incremental upgrades as the greatest thing ever. There’s realistically not much of a difference between the first iPhone and the 4S, just as there is little difference between the E-PL1 and the E-P3. The underlying operational principle is the same, and I think many people would like to see something different – it’s why Android sells well, and it’s why nobody would mind a Panoly with a proper EVF built-in.

Björn Utpott
2 years ago |No it’s not. You’re right of course, still if I could replace the GH2 with an equally capable and fully featured body that is less bulky, I would. As to the G3, that’s missing a few controls and ergonomic features like a rubberized grip (like the GH2 and NEX-7 have).
spam
2 years ago |But GX1 isn’t intended for GH2 owners primarily, it’s for those who want a small body with more control buttuns than GF3.
If you want a smaller camera with built in viewfinder and articulted screen then Pana already got the G3.

Its enough with peak focusing – and even at 900k, its no substitute for a proper viewfinder.
Eric
2 years ago |That’s the point. Not only is it missing a built-in EVF (something a lot of enthusiast do require), even the LCD is worse than what Sony is using their entry level NEX C3, and worse than what Samsung uses on the NX200. Heck, it’s worse than what Nikon uses in the P300; and that’s just a $300 P&S. If they’re not going to have an EVF built in at the very least they should use the best LCD/OLED screen they can get.
Björn Utpott
2 years ago |So far, I don’t see enough reason to upgrade from the GH2 or add a GX1 body to my kit:
Improved sensor: NO
Multi-aspect sensor: likely NO
Higher resolution (add on) EVF: NO, actually less than GH2′s EVF (1.53 M dots)
Higher resolution screen: NO
Articulated Screen: NO
Faster AF: likely YES; unknown if all Lumix lenses will benefit
More compact: YES, but add EVF will negate some of the reduction in body size.
Better styling: likely YES
Unless Panasonic has something else up their sleeve, that’s not enough for me. Of course I don’t pretend to be representative of the camera buying masses.
DonTom
2 years ago |Strange how the resolution has dropped. Did the original rumour source get it wrong? Or did Panny change their mind? After all, as soon as it was known that the GX1 wouldn’t have an EVF, the howling started here. Perhaps they said “F” it, chuck a cheaper LCD in if the wannabe pros won’t buy it anyway! Save it all up for when they finally get the EVF version sorted, so that there is a clear choice, and they’ll all shell out twice as much for the cam.
Or perhaps the LCD choice comes down to supply chain, bound to be some issues floating around in Thailand for everyone.
Trevor
2 years ago |This and so many other things make me wonder if O&P are tired of R&D. Perhaps they are trying to get consumers to warm to the idea that the current gen tech is all we need. That would allow them to increase margins on “new” camera bodies. Any further refinements would be through cheaper developments like JPEG engines, smile recognition, and art filters.
Tom

2 years ago |GF2 did not warrant the level of criticism as it IMHO is a better camera than the GF1. Yes Panasonic should have used the opportunity for a more significant upgrade but public should not be fooled into believing the GF1 is a better camera than the GF2 – it isn’t. Read a very good GF2 ratings/user review on this site that deals with most of the alleged criticisms of the GF2 for further information that supports my view. By all means disagree as that is what debate/forums are all about

2 years ago |It’s a simple (though a bit sad) fact that technology-wise, Sony is now ahead of Panasonic in many aspects. Moreover, Panasonic are probably too proud to buy technologies from other companies (like Samsung or even Sony). Then again, let’s hope they are also proud enough to compete properly (not just based on price), with others.. Let’s see in about a year.

2 years ago |Have been waiting for a pro m43 body that could challenge Canon 7D in IQ and shooting speed, would come in a metal rangefinder like body, have controls like Sony NEX-7, include a good quality viewfinder and radio TTL flash. Even if it would cost 1200-1700 USD (for body), there would be quite a few prosumers who would not only buy it, but also invest 1000-2000 in lenses. Me included.
Now it looks like I should be selling my GH1 and 2000 USD worth of lenses – just to purchase NEX-7 and start waiting for Sony to get their act together with lens lineup
Bob B.
2 years ago |Sony really has blown it. They need to be thinking Pentax “Limited” pancake type prime lenses. That would be the ticket for this body to get most of us excited about that camera. Again…I have no idea who is designing for them…but I doubt that it is a photographer. LOL.

Why is removing an option sold as innovation or something new here? Ah, Panasonic with the GX1 seems to seriously innovate by leaving out things. Leaving out EVFs, leaving out high resolution displays…so far the GX1 sounds like…uh…like…a renamed GF1???
avds
2 years ago |Oh yeah, thanks, I misread the rumor and kind of succumbed to the community’s pessimism
I thought it’s all about the new EVF and then also must have confused dots with pixels! But I just checked and the new EVF doesn’t look different from the existing LVF1 that I have, judging by the specs, does it? People praise Oly’s and GH2′s 1.5k EVFs a lot, so maybe Panasonic at least will match those ones’ quality in the stand alone unit without the obvious spec improvement on paper? The current LVF1 is not abysmal, but pretty mediocre still.

2 years ago |Any focus by wire lenses won’t work on other systems. Frame coverage is not the issue — focus by wire is. If you don’t have the right power and/or command to the lens, then it’s worthless. Camera makers are typing lenses to systems now. The days of cross-system lenses are numbered if all makers go to focus-by-wire. Heck, even Canikon lenses have limitations, in that the newer ones can’t control aperture on other systems.

However not surprised to see as predicted earlier that it likely is a GF1 magnesium metal body on the slightly smaller GF2 size frame. Note the GF2 allowed more space between the hotshoe and flash for a slightly larger higher spec EVF to be mounted and likely the GX1 would retain the GF2 rear control wheel while adding a control wheel to the top.
I expect that Pany has added several goodies for external mike, remote control etc. to the mix people wanted added to the GF1 or GF2.
While there is a lot of complaints regarding retaining the 460,000 dot resolution screen note that even DPR in its reviews says it is one of the best of its kind with good viewing from side or in bright sunlight and low in battery drain. Also this hopefully would enable a lower price?
Also we have very little information regarding the new 1.44m dot EVF and since smaller hotshoe mounted would have to be a almost total redesign from an existing one used in the G3 body anyway and could even be a OELD one instead?
Seems that the GX1 designation now stands for the base model with the X lens while the more professional or high grade model with inbody EVF would have another figure added like GFX1 or GPRO1? Guess I will just have to wait a little longer with my GF1.

2 years ago |Sadly, there are no other options at this time. And, when you have several lenses, you have investment in time and money. I think that gives you the license to ask for what you want. Damn, man, it’s the internet! None of us really should be spending ANY time here. To complain about HOW we are wasting our time here is a bit pedantic, don’t you think?

2 years ago |So in the United States after it is announced in November, it will be readily available by the summer of 2013, then in the fall of 2013 or winter 2014, we’ll get a price break. I can’t wait!

Why spend money to develop new features when (based on previous m43 cameras) Panasonic will barely advertise it and wait months and months to ship the GX1 in serious numbers?
Sorry to sound cynical but Panasonic do not seem very determined to make m43 a success…

Fuji is not developing a micro four thirds camera. The mirrorless camera it has in the pipeline is presumably a higher end product designed, according to their own announcement, to have IQ surpassing FF.

For the comments that suggest that m43 is not meant to be even semi pro.
How come we have great lenses like the 20, 25, 45mm panny/leica
Or to those that suggest that panny can’t make the camera we all want, because it will cost too much or it will not sell
Look at the nex line the nex3 is half the price of the top m43 camera, compare it on Snapsort and you will see the error of panny’s strategy.

2 years ago |Agreed. So Panasonic is not only warming over a 3 year old EVF for their optional external viewfinder, they are also reusing a 3 year old LCD? This is Panasonics idea of an enthusiast camera? All I can say to them is good luck.
One of the reasons for the success of the GF1 is because it had virtually no competition; that is no longer the case. Forget the NEX-7, so far the GX1 doesn’t even sound like it can match the NEX-5n.

If, by any chance, they are targeting photographers who focused on imaging, isn’t LCD is the first step to appreciate, criticize or modify our work?

2 years ago |Instead of whining why Panasonic is not giving you the expensive RF lookalike you crave, maybe you should take another look at the sales figures. The best selling Panasonic m43 cameras are the dumbed down models selling for $400 or less.
Face it – m43 is a consumer oriented format. With competition from Nikon, Sony and Samsung, P+O cannot sell cameras and lenses for the insane premiums (over 4:3 gear for example) as was the case more than a year ago.
The camera you are asking for does not make sense because for what it would cost you could find much better alternatives. It would lose Panasonic money even if all the m43 forum readers bought one.

2 years ago |Any rumors on if the gx has a mic jack? I think that’s one thing that would greatly separate this from the g3 and the competition. I really dislike Olympus’ implementation using an adapter and nex7′s proprietary alpha shoe, both of which blocks off the option off attaching a standard shoe mounted shotgun mic.

2 years ago |The GX1 is a consumer-grade camera…maybe slanted toward video (why exactly are they putting video in cameras, again? LOL!)…. I wonder if Pany still has any intention of giving us a semi-pro successor to the GF1…because this camera will not be it. The two released X lenses are very cool…but VERY “consumer” lenses…and although they are great designs..they are cheaply built and a bit pricey for their build quality. I am expecting a matching body in the same vain (right before the holidays!). So I guess I can X this one off my list!
Definitely.

2 years ago |True. First the rumored integrated EVF turned out to be external. Then the rumored new sensor turned out to be the same one as the G3. Now the rumored improved screen turns out to be the same one as the GF1…

Get an EP3- metal, lots of controls, much better screen, just as fast, and IBIS. probably similar price to GX1?
GX1 offers a better sensor (but only at high ISO) and…….er……..
why bother when existing cameras have it covered and offer other strengths? From early reviews, I think the real strength will be the 14-42 x lens (if you are ok with powerzooms). Unless the price is REALLY great, the GX1 is a really poor effort from Panasonic.

2 years ago |I just realized what Panasonic’s strategy is here!
They’re renaming the GF2 and calling it the GX1! After the disappointment with the GF3, it’ll look brilliant in comparison!
And we thought that only the geniuses at Olympus were capable of cooking up a scheme like repackaging the same camera for 3 generations and 9 models. At least Panasonic knows how to discontinue models. And they have one serious model in the GH2.
The NEX-5N and NEX-7 are looking better and better.
Way to go Panasonic!

2 years ago |This rumor thread is completely false. It makes no sense to release GX1 with the rumored specs. It is in no way better than other existing Panasonic offerings. If you look at the specs it doesn’t deserve a revolutionary label like GX1. Either the rumor is completely wrong (there is an inbuilt viewfinder + high-res LCD on the back) or Panny has lost it. In what way would it be better than the legendary GF1??

Let’s hope Olympus’ camera division will still be around by the time of the next Photokina (almost a year?).
Well, I am glad I bought a GF1 while they were still available. It’s good enough to keep me happy until Photokina and a while longer. Hopefully Olympus understands that they might make some good money by creating a PEN format camera with a built in viewfinder. It’s pretty obvious now that Panasonic has no interest to serve that market. What a shame.
