Black Water Dive off West Palm Beach, Florida. Old Dog New Tricks, Christopher Newbert’s book Within A Rainbowed Sea was published in 1984 including photos of a Pelagic Octopus taken on a black water dive in Hawaii. Many of use were so impressed that we were out with our film gear trying to duplicate that moment. In the past year or two Black Water Diving has made a comeback in Palm Beach County, Florida waters. I made my first black water dive in over thirty years on Monday with Pura Vida Divers.
For non-divers, black water diving is making a night dive in very deep (400 feet or more) water. On Monday we were 4.5 miles off shore in 400+ deep water and drifted along at a 20 to 45 foot depth for 90 minutes covering over two miles on the drift. What can be found are many animals not otherwise seen on any other type of dive. Many of these animals come up from the very deep water to feed and mate while others are just a drift at the mercy of the currents. This is truly a relaxing and enlightening type of diving that anyone with excellent buoyancy control should try at lease once.
