Is Micro Four Thirds on the rise again?

Share
Search interest, used prices, and retail momentum all point to a Micro Four Thirds upswing.

Search data is heating up for Micro Four Thirds (MFT). Interest is rising, secondhand prices are holding or inching upward, and in several Asian markets these compact powerhouses are moving briskly. If you’ve been wondering whether MFT still has juice, the quiet answer from the market is: yes, very much.

Google Trends in particular is lighting up around the format. Curiosity is climbing, used gear isn’t languishing, and shelves in parts of Asia aren’t staying full for long. Translation: momentum is real.

Petapixel: OM System really needs to do better

Share

Jeremy Gray from PetaPixel shared his opinion about the OM Digital gear released in 2025:

There is no question that the OM-3 is a good camera and the 50-200mm f/2.8 IS Pro a great lens, but that is about the extent of the excitement in 2025 for OM System. A slightly refreshed OM-5 II and three marginally updated lenses are just fine, at best.

I think Micro Four Thirds is in a position where it really needs to justify its existence to the broader photography market. The format still has a lot to offer, and I know plenty of photographers who use and love Micro Four Thirds cameras and lenses. However, given the quality of APS-C and full-frame cameras on the market at prices similar to or even lower than those OM System offers, I think OM System really needs to do better. I believe Micro Four Thirds can be great, so I’d really like to see OM System prove it to me, and more importantly, to everyone else. The company just didn’t do that this year.

The “older” PEN cameras are selling great in Asia. And it sorts of proves the point that affordable compact cameras have a future while “luxury” releases like the OM-3 are more of a niche product. Would love ot see a $1000-$1200 PEN camera with new sensor. I think a product like this would sell hot!
