Camera vs the Human Eye. And do digital sensors lose effectiveness after some time?

Share

Why can’t I just point my camera at what I’m seeing and record that?” If you are looking for the answer you can find it here at Cambridgeincolor.com. It’s really one of the best articles I have read recently. There are a couple of very interesting facts:

1) Angle of view

Although the human eye has a focal length of approximately 22 mm, this is misleading because (i) the back of our eyes are curved, (ii) the periphery of our visual field contains progressively less detail than the center, and (iii) the scene we perceive is the combined result of both eyes.” and “Our central angle of view — around 40-60° — is what most impacts our perception. Subjectively, this would correspond with the angle over which you could recall objects without moving your eyes. Incidentally, this is close to a 50 mm “normal” focal length lens on a full frame camera

2) Resolution and detail

I guess most of us thought our eye would have more “Megapixels” than a camera. Surprisingly the answer is NO! Cambridgeincolor says: “A single glance by our eyes is therefore only capable of perceiving detail comparable to a 5-15 megapixel camera (depending on one’s eyesight). However, our mind doesn’t actually remember images pixel by pixel; it instead records memorable textures, color and contrast on an image by image basis.”

3) Sensivity and Dynamic Range

Dynamic range* is one area where the eye is often seen as having a huge advantage. If we were to consider situations where our pupil opens and closes for different brightness regions, then yes, our eyes far surpass the capabilities of a single camera image (and can have a range exceeding 24 f-stops). However, in such situations our eye is dynamically adjusting like a video camera, so this arguably isn’t a fair comparison.

Conclusion:Overall, most of the advantages of our visual system stem from the fact that our mind is able to intelligently interpret the information from our eyes, whereas with a camera, all we have is the raw image. Even so, current digital cameras fare surprisingly well, and surpass our own eyes for several visual capabilities. The real winner is the photographer who is able to intelligently assemble multiple camera images — thereby surpassing even our own mental image.

Panasonic slips into the red zone (financial report). Olympus and Casio to develop together compact cameras?

Share

The German website Photoscala (Click here) analyzed the first quarter results from Panasonic. The company had a net loss of 30.4 billion yen (approximately € 273.3 million) in the first quarter of fiscal year 2011/12. This is of course also the result of the Tsunami/Fukushima disaster.
The digital camera sales can be increased with 44.4 billion yen (about € 400 million) over the fourth quarter of last fiscal year by almost 34%. But it’s still 13% below the fiscal first quarter from last year.

There is a small rumor running in Japan (Source: etnews.com) saying that Olympus and Casio are ready for a partnership in the compact camera segment. It sounds like Olympus will develop future compact cameras together with Casio. Those compacts will use Olympus lenses and Sony sensors. I know it’s not a Micro Four Thirds related news but the most interesting bit of info is that Olympus would drop Panasonic sensors in favour of Sony sensors. At that point I want to remind you that trusted sources said that Samsung offered to make Four Thirds sensors for Oly. If we should give some credit to those rumors than Olympus is trying to become more independent from Panasonic sensors.

2) Mark Dubovoy went on Safari with the GH2 (Click here ot read the full article at Luminous Landscape): “I was surprised by how well thought out this camera is.  Far superior to anything Canon or Nikon or Sony or Fuji have to offer.  As complicated and feature laden as the camera is, the locations of the controls and the ergonomics (other than the traditional film type shape of the camera which is all wrong, but no manufacturer seems to want to deviate from) are excellent.  Much better than any other Japanese camera I have tested to date.” And now hear that: “On the other hand, the user manual establishes a new low point in my experience.  It is the absolute worst manual I have ever seen.  Shame on you Panasonic.  If I had hired a crew with the sole purpose of writing the worst manual ever, I do not think it would have been half as bad as this one is.

Those are the links to the GH2 [shopcountry 16254]. For US readers, the Black GH2 with 14-42mm is in Stock at Amazon (Click here).

Just a reminder: Panasonic officially said they are working on the GH3 with new EVF and faster AF. My guess is that it will come by early 2012. If you know more about the GH3 drop me a line at 43rumors@gmail.com. Thanks!

New GF3, E-P3, 12mm reviews

Share

Dcresource (Click here) posted the final Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3 review: “Overall, I like the features, performance, and photo quality of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3, but I’m a lot less excited about its design (speaking as a GF1 owner). It’s one of those cameras that you’ll absolutely want to try in person before you buy it. If you can handle the compromises that come with producing such a small camera, then it’ll definitely serve you well.

The korean website SLRclub (Click here) posted the full Olympus E-P3 review. As you know google translation tool doesn’t work because korean websites do love to post the text as a JPG image! But you can still look at the graphs and image samples!

Hinting (dpreview forum user) made a review with some of the m43 wide angle lens against the New [shoplink 23576]Olympus 12mm f/2.0[/shoplink]. And first shots with the [shoplink 23576]Olympus 12mm f/2.0[/shoplink] lens on the e-p1 (E-P1.net forum).

Rumors from others: Nikon sensor versus m43 sensor, NEX-7 specs, NX200 rumors.

Share

Image source: Jorginho (Dpreview forum user)

There are a couple of new interesting “mirrorless” rumors:

1) Nikon could announce their new mirrorless system on August 24. As you see from the image on top the sensor is smaller than the Micro Four Thirds sensor. How will the image quality be compared to m43 cameras? Thom Hogan says: “What if–and please, this is a what if, not a will–but what if Nikon was able to put a 10mp+ sensor into a Coolpix P7000-sized body ([shoplink 24280 ebay]Click here to see that camera[/shoplink]) that had an m4/3 level of image capability? I believe that’s in the realm of possibilities.

2) Sony will announce a NEX-7 with built-in viewfinder by end of August. It should have an ISO range of 100 up to 25.600 (Source: SonyAlphaRumors).

3) There are also new NX200 rumors coming from Russia. No built-in EVF, no touch-screen, no tilt-lcd. Sounds boring! (Source: MirrorlessRumors)

UPDATED: VF-3 price in Europe 199 Euro and not 150 Euro! (a note about the missing built-in flash)

Share

It looks like some website yesterday reported the wrong european price of the VF-3 (Dpreview said the street price was 150 Euro). According to openpn.com (CLick here) the real price of the VF-3 is 199 Euro (not 150 Euro). By the way they made an analysis of the VF-3 compared it to the VF-2 and to OVF such as E-450, D3100 or 1100D in order to give an idea of what you get. The price is now official on Olympus Germany website too! UPDATE: It looks like even Olympus America itself doesn’t know the real price of the viewfinder. The Olympus Facebook page says the VF-3 price is $149 instead of the official $179! (Thanks E-P1.net for finding this).

Concerning the E-PL3, the price of the 14-42 kit is 649 Euro… same as NEX-C3 with its 18-55. You can see a comparison between both again at openpn.com (Click here)… The E-PL3 has many features not present in the NEX. (Click here to read the google english translation).

UPDATE: a note about the wrong built-in flash rumor. The info came from external websites and I trusted them to much also because the leaked picture really gave us to believe that this might be true. Will be more careful next time with rumors coming not form my trusted sources! Thanks for your understanding!

And here is a list to some of the article I found on the web and I didn’t post yesterday:
