First hacked E-M1 firmware update is available (at your risk).

Share

Lightsnow (Click here) developed two(!) custom E-M1 firmware updates:

“The main feature of this release is, that is a bigger part of the sensor for the 1080p videos. This means that a resolution similar to 4k is read by the sensor and then downscaled to 1080p. You gain a lot of nice things like:
  1. The Auto Focus in videos should be smoother.
  2. Full Sensor read in video mode. No crop.
  3. Better ISO performance in low light video situations
  4. More Dynamic Range in video
  5. This firmware is based on the official version 2.0.”

Of course you have to be aware that this is nto an official firmware from Olympus. It’s your choice to take the risk or not. Lightsnow also promised to add soon 4K recording to the E-M1:

“Next up would be a higher framerate, higher bitrate and of cause the 4k feature itself.”

Sounds exciting…if it works!!!

Paniko:I’d like to share my last video I did the day before Olympus released the “NO4K firmware update” for the OMD E-M1 :) http://youtu.be/tszjsd9kTAY. I’m relatively new to video, but shooting it with a OMD E-M1 does not let myself down and (for now) i’m not feeling the need to buy another camera just for that.

(FT4) There may be a new E-M1 firmware update to fix “mysets” delete bug.

Share

The warning message has now been added ont he E-M1 firmware update page.

Our reader Enrico noticed one bug coming along the new E-M1 firmware update:

The recently released firmware version 2.0 for the Olympus E-M1 resets almost all current settings and deletes all Mysets (stored sets of settings) upon installation. Basically, the camera is back to factory defaults but still remembers the current image number and current date and time. Even things like the photographer’s name in the copyright field in metadata are gone.
This happened to me when updating from version 1.4. Aside from this, the update was uneventful and I have noticed no negative side effects of the new firmware.
Better write down all non-default settings in your Mysets before updating.

And an anonymous source just told me that Olympus will fix this with the next E-M1 firmware update.

Panasonic UK interview: Says GH4 is a huge success in UK. Mirrorless sales growing worldwide.

Photokina 2014 – Panasonic-GH4-Matt-Frazer about the GH4
from Personal View on Vimeo.

Photographyblog interviewed Barnaby Sykes and Dai Mukai from Panasonic. Here are some key info:

– Whether we’re looking at volume or value, CSC shows very strong growth.
– (in UK) We actually had more orders than we forecast for the GH4 and ran out. We got some more in from Japan and ran out again. We’ve just put another order in.
– The GM5 is not called GM2 because it’s a major step up from the GM5 and will not replace the Gm1 (has EVF, improvement in AF speed and also burst shooting).
– LX100 also doesn’t replace the LX7
– Cameras with built-in Viewfinders are a really hot trend on the market
– premium compact camera (fixed lens) market is growing

Sounds like Panasonic is finally on the right path!

On focus: All the things you have or didn’t know about the LX100…and Leica D-Lux clone.

The most popular new Four Thirds sensor camera is actually a fixed lens one: The Panasonic LX100. Preorders, specs and other info can be found at Amazon, Adorama, BHphoto. In Europe at Panasonic Germany, WexUK, Panasonic Austria, Panasonic France, Panasonic Italy, Panasonic Spain, Panasonic Netherlands, Panasonic Belgium.

And here is a recap about that camera:

1) Quick notes:
– LX100 doesn’t replace the LX7
– The effective sensor area on the LX100 is 1.5X larger than 1″ and 4.3X the size of 1/1.7″
– Has the same 100Mbit 4K codec found in the GH4.

2) The Story:
Panasonic will contually update you with the Story Behind LUMIX LX100 Development on this page: http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/lx100_interview/
Great image samples can be seen here: http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/gallery/lx100/Bernie_DeChant/index.html

3) Curiosity: New advanced lens construction

1000-Panasonic-Lumix-LX100-Lens-Construction_1410537986

ePhotozine posted that interetsing info: “If the same lens construction structure from the LX7 was used with a large 4/3 sensor, then the lens would have ended up being 2.3x bigger, however, thanks to clever engineering the LX100 lens is only slightly larger than the LX7 lens.

4) This is the LX100 compared to his “inspiration” the LC1 camera:
