VLSsymposium (PDF file here) unveiled some more info about the new 16MP 3D stacked Olympus sensor:

A 3D stacked CMOS Image Sensor with Global-shutter mode and high speed capturing mode:
The paper by Toru Kondo et al. from Olympus Corp. will describe a 16Mpixel 3D stacked CMOS image sensor with pixel level interconnections using 4 million micro bumps.

The two semiconductor substrates are bonded by a 7.6um pitch micro-bump array, and the storage node array is comprised on the bottom substrate to improve parasitic light sensitivity (PLS). Both a 16Mpixel global-shutter mode with a -180dB PLS and 2Mpixel 10000fps high speed image capturing are achieved. (Paper C4-5, “A 3D stacked CMOS image sensor with 16Mpixel global-shutter mode and 2Mpixel 10000fps mode using 4 million interconnections,” Toru Kondo et al., Olympus Corp.)

Tom:Some photos of a wild windy and sea-spray ridden bicycle ride along the west coast of Tasmania (Australia) taken with an EM5 mk2.  Overall impression is that the AF and image stabilisation are a significant improvement over mk1.  Button and dial feel much better ‘for real’.  http://bicyclenomad.com/2015/04/13/tasmania-west-coast-remoteness/

Olympus E-PL7 review at CameraLabs.

E-PL7
The E-PL7 tested by CameraLabs

CameraLabs (Click here) posted the full Olympus E-PL7 review:

I liked the PEN E-PL7, it’s a great development of the PEN line and a capable, classy model. It scores over other models with its classic good looks and solid construction, physical controls, built-in stabilisation and the ability to plug in accessories like a viewfinder or external flash. Given that Olympus is looking for a way to differentiate the PEN line from its more advanced OMD models I’d have thought redesigning the touch-screen to offer better and simpler control options, particularly for self-shooting, would have been an obvious move. That, and the quality of the 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 EZ powered kit zoom are the disappointments here. Of course you can always fit a different lens and not everyone’s a selfie fanatic so neither is a critical failing, but they do prevent the E-PL7 from scoring our top award.

You get the E-PL7 at Robertscamera for [shoplink 52354 ebay]$449 (body only)[/shoplink] and [shoplink 52353 ebay]$549 (with kit lens)[/shoplink].

New March camera shipment data. Decaying Skunk….

Share

CIPA published the March digital camera shipment data. And things keep getting worse and worse or as Personal View writes it’s a “Decaying Skunk”. Compared to the already very bad sales of March 2014 we had 20% less cameras unit sold in March 2015. I guess this is also one of the reasons why companies are slowing down new camera release cycles and eventually announce only minor updated cameras with same sensor again and again. But that lack of innovation will again slow down sales…

Maybe companies should do the exact opposite….bring some exciting new kind of technologies! Easier said than done I guess…
