I just got this:

“V.MODE Button on the G9’s viewfinder is there to change the size of the viewfinder between 3 different magnification levels.
With the increased size of the viewfinder you can sometimes find yourself scanning the edges. With the smaller magnification options it gives users the option to have a smaller preview without needing to scan the edges when shooting.”
