Pekka Potka discussion with Mr. Terada (PDAf possible, no OM-D monochrome).

Pekka Potka (Click here) had an one hour chat with Mr. Terada from Olympus. Here are just some of the info you can read on his website:

– Once again Olympus confirmed that there will be new bodies that will bring full Af support on FT lenses. And once again notice that they do not say “FT body”…but just “body”
– There is the possibility of a new lower OMD and a higher OMD than E-M5 model. Which one of these will be coming first was not answered.
– Technologies like PDAF (phase detecting auto focus) on sensor and focus peaking are available for them, although “no decision yet” about usage.
– And an OM-D Monochrome sensor would cost too much. Note. the Leica Monochrome is the only camera currently having this and costs $8000 at Amazon(!).

Soon the re-release of the Olympus E-M5 firmware 1.2 update….($80 Visa Gift Card deal)

—-

As you know Olympus temporarily suspended the firmware updated version 1.2 download (See Olympus America).

Just got that news from an anonymous source: “E-M5 firmware version 1.2 had been finalized and is ready for use in cameras.” Olympus now started the testing period. If all works fine the firmware update could be released in October. One of the bug that will be fixed is the “not recognizing” of some lenses.

And our friend Tyson Robichaud (Click here) wrote a long fw update wishlist. I agree on all points and Olympus should read the full article :)

There is a $80 gift card deal on all Olympus cameras (Click here to see the detailed deal page on Amazon).

(UPDATED) Olympus-Sony deal now official! They will work together on mirrorless cameras.

It’s done! After months of speculations the Olympus and Sony deal has been officially announced. Wall Street Journal reports: “Olympus said Friday it will raise ¥49 billion ($631.6 million) by issuing new shares to Sony Corp. With the capital tie-up, Sony will effectively become Olympus’s biggest shareholder, with a stake of 11.5% in terms of voting rights. The two companies also plan by the end of December to set up a joint venture to develop medical devices and to study collaboration in compact digital cameras.

The last sentence is what we care about most: “collaboration in compact digital cameras“. I guess both will keep staying and competing with their own systems and share the sensor, oled and lens technology.

UPDATE: Engadget reports: “The deal also includes a component-sharing agreement in the photography space, with Olympus mirror cells and camera lenses being given to Sony, while image sensors (where Sony is very strong) will go the other way.

UPDATE_2: Here you can download the offical press release text (.pdf).

What's your guess. Is that a good or bad news for the Micro Four Thirds system?

Olympus: E-5 successor could be Four Thirds, Micro Four Thirds or hybrid…

Olympus President Haruo Ogawa has been interviewed by Imaging Resource (Click here). When asked about the E-5 successor he said: “We are considering several different ideas for a body that would accept Four Thirds lenses, but would also have on an acceptably compact size. At this moment, we cannot say anything for sure, because there are many possibilities — it could be Micro Four Thirds, or Four Thirds, or somehow a hybrid

So could it be that both systems are about to merge in one single camera? A “hybrid” solution sounds mysterious, wondering how this could look like…

Olympus: There will be an E-P3 successor.

Olympus keeps sending messages about the future development. In an interview made by DigifotoPRO Toshiyuki Terada from Olympus confirmed that there will be an E-P3 successor. At that point I remind you that trusted sources that the E-P series as it was is will not continue. The new camera will be very different. Of course the first idea that will come into your mind is a PEN with integrated viewfinder. Taking inspiration from the past we can expect a sort of digital [shoplink 33877 ebay]Olympus PEN EM (they are here on ebay)[/shoplink]. A camera like that would have to compete against the very good Fuji X-E1 and Sony NEX-6.

The question is, what would you expect from a high End PEN camera to be competitive against the Fuji/Sony?

One more pro Four Thirds statement form Olympus. Working on new Four Thirds solution…

Olympus is also using social networks to reaffirm the Four Thirds commitment. Olympus Nordic (facebook) wrote that “As of today, a new camera is under study in order to optimize the Four Thirds lenses. Unfortunately we cannot disclose any further information before official release dates.

Please note the subtitle info they gave us. They said “a” and not “a Four Thirds” camera is under study to optimize the Four Thirds lenses. So it could be also a MFT camera with full FT lens support?

POLL: Your opinion about the Panasonic “Full Frame temptation”.

In these days of Photokina Panasonic stated multiple times that they want to play a major role in the PRO market. And they also admitted that they are “thinking Full Frame”. Panasonic is reading 43rumors so le’t give them a hint about the 43rumors readers preferences. The short question for you is. If Panasonic would launch a FF mirrorless system with a new range of lenses:
