GH3 shoots Antarctica video at -40˚C!

Welcome to Union Glacier from Studiocanoe on Vimeo.

Temujin Doran sent me a link to his latest video. It’s a documentary shot with the Panasonic GH3 in Antarctica. This is his brief report for 43rumors:

In 2013 I was the filmmaker attached to the Scott Expedition – the journey that completed Captain Scott’s final, ill-fated expedition from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back again. Our team passed through Union Glacier Camp on route to the starting point of Scott’s Hut at Cape Evans, but after becoming stranded at the camp and working with the staff there; I decided to make this documentary. The whole film was shot on a Panasonic GH3, with some additional shots done with a GoPro.

From a technical side of things – I’ve been working with m43 Panasonic cameras and lenses in the Arctic and Antarctic for several years now. Whilst all camera’s suffer in the cold, these have never given me problems whilst filming and have been used in temperatures as low as -40˚C. Battery life is somewhat diminished, but I carry lots of spares and have close to my body to keep them warm.

During the making of this documentary I never once put the camera in it’s bag. If I wasn’t using it, I just left it in my tent., which isn’t that much warmer than outside. The same went for the lenses – I used the Lumix 12-35mm F2.8, the 35-100mm F2.8 and the 100-300mm F4.0-5.6. For sound I used a Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro with a Dead Kitten in an attempt to block most of the wind. Most of the shots were on a Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod.

I’m currently working on the Scott Expedition documentary. The two members of the team each took with them a Panasonic GX7 with a Lumix 14mm F2.5 lens for capturing photos, video diaries and footage from the ice. During the expedition, the batteries were charged via solar panels,

If you’re interested, you can see all the short films I made for the Scott Expedition here – http://studiocanoe.com/expeditions/

As this is a camera blog – I’m almost certain that someone is going to say that I’ll have to go back and do it again, because it wasn’t shot in 4K. :)

Olympus 40-150mm PRO lens gets tested by Robin Wong and BMCR. More mind blowing pics from Frank Rückert

We have plenty of new tests and image samples taken with the new Olympus 40-150mm PRO lens.

Robin Wong posted the full review and writes:

The amout of fine detail this lens is able to resolve is amazing, with plenty of micro-contrast. The sharpness is also uniform from edge to edge of the frame, showing no corner softness. The quality of the M.Zuiko 40-150mm Pro lens’ bokeh does not disappoint, creating creamy, buttery smooth blurred out of focus area. The subjects in focus was easily “popped” out of the bokeh background, and looking three-dimensional.

On his site you can download the full size image samples (direct link here).

Bestmirrorlesscamerareviews writes:

I think that the image samples speak for themselves. The 40-150mm PRO zoom lens can deliver impressive results in terms of sharpness and bokeh and proves to be a very versatile lens especially with the MC-14 teleconverter. There are many usages I can think of.

And our reader Bobby noticed that there is a new set of mind-blowing samples from Frank Rückert at Pen3.de.

New video samples shot on the new SLR magic 10mm t/2.1 lens.

SLR Magic 10mm/2.1 – First day with a BMPCC from framearts on Vimeo.

Framearts posted that test video shot on the new SLR magic 10mm T/2.1 MFT lens:

For my first test video i chose the BMPCC because first of all i wanted to try out the filmic quality of the lense. Test for sharpness i will do with my GH4.
It is a very solid lense and feels really good in the hand. Focus and iris are working really smooth. I see nearly no CA and the distortion is on a minimum. I really like the the colors, also the skin tones look really good. So for me, just my first conclusion is, that it is a very good lense for a filmic look and it seems to be a nice combination with the BMPCC.
I also was looking how good you can shoot run and gun with no IS on the BMPCC with that lense. As you can see, when you have time and don´t stress too much it´s ok, although not perfect at all. But i guess when you take a rig it´s much better and for sure an option. So for filmic purposes yes, but if you do documentary shooting and don´t want to be recognized, for me, the 12-35 Panny lense with its superb OIS is the only option.
The Variable ND filter feels very solid, fits perfectly on the lense and has a very smooth setting. Just the stick for turning the filter could be a little bit smaller.

P.S.: Original press text of the new lens can be read here: 43rumors.com/slr-magic-announces-the-hyperprime-cine-10mm-t2-1-and-slr-magic-77-nd-0-4-nd-1-8-filter/

Note:
Preorder the 40-150mm f/2.8 PRO lens at Amazon, Adorama, Bhphoto, GetOlympus, Wex UK and Technikdirekt.

First a curious note: A couple of readers told me the image you see here on top is not the 40-150mm PRO lens. Don’t get fooled guys. The image shows the lens with the hood retracted and therefore it makes it look so big :)

Frank Rückert on Pen3.de posted new image samples including 100% crops. That lens is really razor-sharp! And here is a hands-on video by Jamie McDonald:
