The new improvements list expected with the GH3 firmware update
Let me catch up with two news:
1) Very very very soon Panasonic will announce the new GH3 firmware update. I am curious to see if focus peaking will be one of the new features!
2)ThePhoBlographer reports that “Olympus’s former head, Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, is facing five years in prison due to manipulating account balances and we should expect a final hearing within a couple of weeks. He has already pleaded guilty to the crimes. Kikukawa won’t be alone in prison though–other managers also pleaded guilty but they won’t be getting as harsh a sentence.” P.S.: Woodford is now selling his book about the Olympus scandal on Amazon (Click here).

With the new GF camera that will be announced in early April Panasonic will step out from the miniaturization war like they already did with the GH3. But Canon seems to think that the miniaturization is still the way to go and as you see from the size comparison on top the new Canon SL1 APS-C DSLR is smaller than the Panasonic GH3. Yep, the world turned up side down and we have DSLR cameras that are smaller than Mirrorless cameras :)
That said I prefer a DSLR or “DSLR styled” like the GH3 to be big enough for ergonomic reasons. For me the SL1 size makes no real sense. It still doens’t fit in a pocket like a GF5 with pancake lens and you miss the usual advantage of a DSLR like having a nice grip and clear and easy to access button layout. That said I want to hold the Sl1 in my hands before to draw any conclusion.
While we are waiting to see the next new Olympus and Panasonic MFT cameras we have some news to report:
1) Olympus announced a new Olympus announces Stylus VH-520 (more about it on Dpreview). 2) Canon announced the smallest APS-C DSLR ever made. It is the Canon EOS 100D/Rebel SL1 (Specs at Amazon, Adorama and BHphoto). The camera has one single goal…go against the mirrorless system camera hype :)
Don’t know if they will succeed with a camera like that…
That is probably one of the most funny new lens announcements ever. We have new lenses from “Dog Shits Optics” :)
On their website they say the lenses based on the Vintage 58mm f/2.0 classic 1960’s Zeiss optical design ([shoplink 37326 ebay]here on eBay[/shoplink]). You can buy them in almost any mount you want, also four Micro Four Thirds and for Four Thirds. The mount will be modified after your purchase. Check out for more info at Etsy.com.
The GX1 with X kit lens sells for $489 at Amazon (Click here) which means that if you count away the price for the lens you pay $180 only for the GX1 body.

Our friend Amos Chapple just sent me a message: “The Atlantic photo blog have just gone live with my pictures from three trips to Iran, with the last one finishing up a couple of weeks ago. All photos shot with a GH2, hopefully I’ll be getting a new GH3 soon!”

Gene: “I had just finished posting my article on what the Nex-FF camera might be, when my mind finally clicked at it all makes sense. Sony is going after Leica. Now the pricing and feature set makes perfect sense. Just updated the piece on http://preferredaperture.blogspot.com/”

Andre: “I’m from Brazil and together with my wife, we left 11 months ago on a RTW trip on bikes that will take 3 years more. I sold almost all my pro Nikon gear to buy a GH2 system, a GoPro and a Sony small camcorder. We are working hard to feature our content on TV and we have pretty good chances since I’ve already photographed as a still photographer for some major TV channels and there’s also a new law that’s good for us. A foreign channel must have at least 50% of content shot by brazilians or about Brazil. 9000km so far I’m loving my GH2 despite it’s poor performance on highlights, noise/shadow banding and continuous AF… I just don’t care anymore but it was a little bit disappointing in the beginning. I carry a 14-140 kit lens, a 20mm f1.7, a 45mm f1.8 and I gave myself a little (heavy) treat that I use for a portrait series about people that help us… a Voigtlander 17,5mm f0.95 that I love. Always shooting wide open using a Heliopan Variable ND. You can check some pics at www.facebook.com/BikesAndSpices There, there’s a nice clip featuring our first 3500kms. Now we are heading to Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia and Slovenia. Cheers!”
