The CP+ roundup (E-P5, Nokton 42.5mm and more).
Images via DC.watch.
The CP+ show in Japan started today and it’s time to make a roundup of the news concerning our Micro Four Thirds system. And finally we got some more interesting news than last days reworked “old” lens announcements
New Olympus E-P3 successor:
Olympus (not) showed the E-P3 successor which has been covered with a blue tissue. It’s said tome this year and no other info has been shared. We suspect this PEN has the new integrated Epson viewfinder. The E-P3 is discontinued at BH and from what I heard the camera should come in Spring/Summer. By the way, the new 75-300mm is now availbale for preorder at BH.
New Olympus 2013 roadmap with E-P5, E-5 successor, new OMD and new high end compact:
Olympus anticipated what will come this year. Not only the new PEN (the E-P5?) but also a new OMD model, a new E camera and a new High End compact camera are on roadmap for 2013. There is no other info about these cameras. The high end compact camera may have a large 1 inch or Four Thirds sized sensor. And while unlikely I still believe there is a chance that the next OMD and E camera may be the same camera
New Voigtlander 42.5mm f/0.95:
It’s a surprise to see Voigtlander-Cosina announce a lens with that focal length knowing that Panasonic will release a 42.5m f/1.2 lens later this year. Voigtlander didn’t unveil a price and time release info yet. All we know is that minimum focusing distance is 23cm, maximum magnification ratio 1:4. And there is no aspherical lens. While waiting to get more news about it you can save this Slidoo eBay search to get notified when preorders will be up.
Tamron 14-150mm f(3.5-5.8 Di III VC:
There are some pics of the new Tamron zoom at DC.watch.
Panasonic…
Noticed something? No real Panasonic news! Where is our GX2? Or the 150mm and 42.5mm lenses? All we see at the Panasonic CP+ booth is the new upgraded 14-42mm lens (Pictures at Focus Numerique).
We had a busy day today. And I am again curious to hear what you find to be the most exciting news…

4 months ago |Cool, so we can look forward to a large sensor compact with hybrid AF. One can only hope. I’ve decided to stick with my old E-PL1 until we have the hybrid AF, as that will hopefully change the whole game. In the meantime, my lens collection is growing nicely with all the money I’m not spending on minor body upgrades.

4 months ago |It looks like 2013 will definitely indicate where the micro four thirds lenses are going to, and it is not promissor at all, only slow lenses from Olympus and re-makes from Panasonic. If this is the path, I will give a chance to Sony Nex… I used to fanboy form Canon / Nikon, and now Olympus/Panasonic are pushing me back!
zozio32
4 months ago |I don’t get it? there is no hint of the lens roadmap from Olympus. I fail to see how the update version of the 75-300 indicate what will be the strategy.
SeattleDV
4 months ago |I agree with Fvanzela. Olympus and Panasonic marketing seems lacking. What’s happened to the innovation and market leadership that has caused so many users to switch from Canon & Nikon to Micro 4/3 only to be disappointed by the announcement of products that are “covered with a blue tissue” or ones that take an inordinate amount of time reach sustained retail levels or ones that fail to reach user expectations. Personally, I’ve gone from Nikon to Canon to Panasonic and I’m on the verge of going back to Nikon or yet another manufacturer that is able to consistently deliver innovative products at both the consumer and pro level. I realize it’s tough for many manufacturers to both develop and publish a “roadmap” for their strategy, but that’s what the best technology companies can do. There has to be a balance between corporate security and giving consumers a decent glimpse of products to look forward to. “Blue tissue paper” over cameras and multiple “re-worked” kit lenses just doesn’t inspire consumer confidence…at least not for me.

4 months ago |Panasonic and Olympus are indeed innovating. The GH3 and OM-D are innovative cameras. Their selection of good lenses are also a testament to their abilities. So, you say you are going back to Nikon? What has Nikon innovated on? Full Frame? Well, full frame came out years ago. Those cameras are also large with heavy lenses most of us have no desire to lug around on most days.
SeattleDV
4 months ago |The GH3 and OMD are innovative cameras… no argument. But I am perhaps one of the few people that have not been completely wowed by the GH3. The new LCD is terrific but unfortunately the EVF does not match the quality of the LCD. I expected the GH3 to have a better viewfinder and an LCD menu that did not “disappear info” after a few seconds. A firmware upgrade at some later date may address the “disappearing info” but why release a flagship camera & claim you’re after a pro-level market with that level of dysfunction? You may not want to “lug around” a 35mm full-frame but there’s a reason Canon AND Nikon are not using EVF displays and Sony is still playing “catch-up” in the pro-market despite having Zeiss lenses. Perhaps the new Ultimicron Epson EVF will offer a vast improvement, but as long as it’s covered in “blue tissue” at trade shows its hard to know. Deciding whether to buy “what’s behind the curtain” seems more suited to a magic show than a world trade show.
MikeH
4 months ago |@SeattleDV What James said….
Especially this
‘What are Canon/Nikon delivering???’
Teh fact that information doesn’t permanently stay on the EVF is your one reason for the angst over the GH3? I think the EVF is quite good on the GH3. But more importantly is the reason then that you think no EVF is ready for you and that only an OVF can satisfy? Panasonic and Olympus are putting out higher quality primes and zooms, what more do you need/desire?
IMO – OVFs are fast on their way to extinction in the digital camera business.
SeattleDV
4 months ago |For MikeH:
The “disappearing info” is not my only gripe with the GH3. (it just happens to be the one I find most annoying)
I used an EVF for a long time with the GH2 and I expected the EVF in the GH3 to be much improved which I don’t find is the case. The OLF may be on the way out for digital cameras but that doesn’t mean it still doesn’t have a clear advantage for many users. Manual focus may be on the way out for digital cameras as well, but would you give up manual focus for shooting video? All cameras have their shortcomings. I just expected more from the GH3 than Panasonic delivered. (and that goes double for the increasing number of slow kit lenses)
Sgoldswo
4 months ago |What? The GH3 EVF is excellent, full stop. I think you’ll find the sands of time for OVFs are running out, even at canon and Nikon. An EVF is so much more flexible, presents you with far more informationan enables wysiwyg shooting. What’s not to like?

4 months ago |Road maps get increasingly difficult to make and maintain.
On one hand users want to know where the product is going and what to expect in the future. On the other hand external forces play a big part in forcing road map changes. This then upsets those who purchase according to the road map as that is what they liked. Or, it upsets others as they claim the company is sticking to out of date ideas and plans.
Like any business plan it is only right at the time of creation and its last review. Don’t review and its trouble, over review and its trouble.
Companies who consult widely upset more people than those that just do what they intended anyway. But it is nice to get a customer base ‘buy in’ to the future.
SeattleDV
4 months ago |Roadmaps for manufacturers as well as consumers are very valuable. It should not be anyone’s guess as to what the immediate future for product development might be. Sony can do it. It’s not that hard. Check out the roadmap for the NEX system in the sister site at Sony Alpha Rumors for a look at a decent camera & lens manufacturer’s roadmap:

JimD
4 months ago |I agree they are necessary.
The issue becomes one of them being cast in concrete. No plan is ever cast in concrete and when its reviewed there are always many who decry any change as they have based their whole life on it. Even when the change was the first they ever heard of it.
Those who may have been consulted get their nose out of joint if their suggestions (which are usually the bulk of them) don’t get used.

4 months ago |I would like an updated E-620 with the OMD sensor and 5 axis IS. I think the E-5 is too big for 43 sensor. I also shoot with Nikon equipment and if I am able to carry a big camera I use my D800E, else if I want lightweight I use EP-2 or E-620 depending on lenses needed.
I realize I am a generation or two behind on my 4/3 bodies but at base ISO I get good enough for a smaller sensor.
caver3d
4 months ago |That’s fine for you because you have a Nikon dSLR. But for those of us that have the E-5 (or E-3) and those great 43 lenses, the next iteration of the E-X should also be the same size (or only slightly smaller) in order to properly handle and balance the 43 lenses. Although I also shoot with an E-M5, the E-X series still has its place. Do not underestimate the 43 sensor with the larger E-X series. They go great together, especially when you factor in the 43 lenses. I have the photographs to prove it. I intend to keep shooting with the 43 cameras (I also have an E-620) for years to come.
It’s not all about the latest and greatest sensor. YOUR abilities as a photographer are still the major factor.

4 months ago |If they have a prototype ready under there why not freaking show it ? what other opportunity do they have to showcase their upcoming camera before it’s announced ? This is stupid.
Either there truly was an E-P5 under the cloth and Oly are being douches for not showing it for no practical reason OR there was nothing special under that and it was just an E-P3 used as a prop and Oly is just full of it.
From the way the velvet folds around the camera I’m inclined to think there actually was a prototype in there, it doesn’t follow the P3 contour 100%. The top of the camera is not 100% flat, in fact it comes down more pronouncedly at the edges (central EVF? I f*king hope not), there’s also a hint of a reasonable grip from the bulge in the grip area or maybe it simply had the larger grip for the E-P3. Anyway, why is all this so difficult for Olympus, we’re not asking for a revolutionary camera, just put a 4:3 LCD on an E-P3 to make space for the EVF on the left and put the OMD sensor like they did with the PM2/PL5 and be done with it. We all know that’s what under the velvet, it deserves no such secrecy, just show it, put a date and price and we’ll give them our money, that’s it. There’s no flirting in this market, they make things we buy them, so stop it with the secrecy it’s idiotic.
Sorry for the rant, I’ve been holding to my PL1 since it’s release waiting for this very specific camera, there’s been 8 other cameras released in between and none have even come close to delivering this simple concept, meanwhile Sony and Fuji are on their 2 generations even though they came much later into mirrorless. This wait is killing me.
Dannecus
4 months ago |I would be quite happy if the E-P5 had a central EVF in the centre of a gently curved top. I think it is more natural to have a view finder directly above the lens. My problem with the OM-D is the great pile of EVF hump, topped by the accessory socket, topped by the hot shoe. I’d be happy with a central EVF and the hot shoe /accessory port on one side. A smaller rear screen to accommodate wouldn’t bother me, I do all my photo reviews on the EVF anyway (VF-2), only use the screen for the menus.
amalric
4 months ago |I certainly agree wt your description of the hump. It is overdesigned to the point of being badly designed. However Oly with the OM-D designation pointed to a new line so they probably believe that the ‘hump-factor’ might attract buyers who want a dSLR replacement.
Now the E-Px series has always been a new concept attracting those who do not care for a dSLR replacement, but want completely digital cameras.
Since Fuji and Sony PROVED that there is a need for a built in EVF in the top tier of that class of cameras, it makes sense that Oly is not caught with it pants down.
For the better or worse we have seen the introduction of a new concept camera, either with a dummy or with a veiled item.. So there is nothing new in this kind of marketing. It probably fills the last days before a camera is ready for production, firmware is being finalized, etc.
it has also the advantage of suspending other buying decisions and raising expectations.
I might be wrong but to me it is rather evident that this time attention is being drawn to the new EVF, and the shape of the hidden object seems to point to a humpless one.
This same model is presented as an E-P3 successor, so we have plenty of convergent hints.
At the same time, and this is unfortunate, other models have been hinted at: a cheaper OM-D (so wt. hump) and an OM-D pro. The latter however has also been forecast as an E model, therefore raising false expectations of a dSLR.
I assume that some of the problems might be due to translation. Even if those are solved I propose to split the posts according to urgency, so that we don’t get 4/3 drama queens spoiling the introductions. A desperate measure that is at work in other forums.
So an introduction at a time please. According to earlier rumors there is an imminent camera, and possibly another two (three?) later this year. That means a camera each quarter, leaving plenty of time for separate introductions.
Please moderate those who would rather poison the wells by waylaying the threads.

4 months ago |I keep seeing things like “so-and-so’s upcoming premium compact may include a large/1″/43rds sized sensor”. I’ve heard this about both Panasonic and Olympus, and others as well. Ross
4 months ago |A bit more wishful thinking, but not impossible. I would have prefered that too. My wife has the Fuji HS20 bridge ultrazoom camera which has a tilting screen like the OM-D E-M5, but the new model, HS50 has now gone to fully articulating & touch control (as well as adding art filters) & with an extended zoom too (X 42). So, to wish for an OM-D with a buit in flash & fully articulating screen (they had it on their DSR’s) is a reasonably wish.

4 months ago |No option for Panasonic rangefinder type. So I guess none is my pic. Seems like Panasonic is the bastard child on this website, for some reason. I wouldn’t mind a fast MF lens, if there were interchangeable focusing screens to help with focus, or at least focus peaking, but without, it’s not worth the hassle to me.
ZOID

4 months ago |Well you can’t blame the site or the commentators, besides some features on the GH3 and the 2.8 zooms Pany hasn’t come up with something interesting in a loooong time, specially in their non-dslrs shaped cameras. The GX1 was pretty ¨meh¨ as a GF-1 successor, the GF models are of no interest to most users here (and even then, what more can change about them ?). The only interesting thing Pany could do right now is announce a true RF-like GF-1 successor, an EVF equipped GX2 and possibly a retractable 12-50 f 2.5-4 zoom. Whoever comes up with a compact EVF equipped m4/3 will take the prize this year, and by the looks of it, chances are Pany are not that interested in competing.

Gino

4 months ago |OM-D and PEN are two different lines. OM-D isn’t PEN. PEN isn’t OM-D. PEN line was first in Olympus m4/3. Yes, we do need a new generation PEN with the new sensor tech and built-in EVF. Many people are looking to replace their E-P1 and E-PL1 etc with an integrated solution. OM-D is good. Best m4/3 camera yet. But some people prefer PEN and the RF styled cameras. RX100 competitor would be welcome. Will Olympus make it though? Seems like Olympus’ idea of a high end compact is still a 1/1.7″ or smaller sensor. Time will tell.
AMVR
4 months ago |You’re missing the point. All cars have 4 wheel, but not all cars are the same, this goes for cameras too, an E-P5 with EVF would not be another OMD nor would it compete with it here’s why:
- left sided EVF is optimal, you get more space around the back side (head moves to left instead of occupying center space around controls)
- Left sided EVF frees up your left eye instead of it being behind the camera so you can visualize surroundings and/or make visual contact for portraits
- In terms of market, an E-P5 with evf would not hurt the OMD, it would capture potential buyers that otherwise are now going for Nex 6/7 and Fuji XE-1/Pro.
- If VF-2 was really the end of all problems there would be no OMD, so no, VF-2/3 is not enough for pen users, don’t go imposing it on us.
- OMD is nearing the end of its life cycle (2 possible OMD models coming 2013 1 pro + 1 lite) so an E-P5 would make no difference in its sales.
- An integrated EVF has been asked for since day one, no one was expecting an slr type camera before the OMD was leaked, everyone had a PEN in mind, half of that people went for OMD because they either didn’t care about form factors or actually preferred slr ergonomic (nostalgia, use, etc), the other half have been stuck with LCD screens and hotshoe hoarding VF-2/3s with no option to use flashes.
- Having another pen equipped with EVF would complete the PEN line and complement the OMD line, there’s a huge gap to be filled between the PL5 and OMD. Besides, the E-P is the flagship model, how could there be lite and mini models with no reference to a normal one. An EVF would be THE feature to differentiate it from the PL5, that’s the only reason why they’ve taken so long and did not release an E-P5 together with the Lite and Mini.
Ulli
4 months ago |Let’s wait and see how Olympus thinks about this with their upcoming PEN.
amalric
4 months ago |V. good, I concur. You also make a good point why the E-P5 has been delayed so long – quite probably because of the new EVF.
There’s also another factor. The new one is flatter than the VF-2, so it might be easier to integrate.
XANDINHOXENON
4 months ago |Wow Olympus Launch E-5. The Four Thirds normal, created by Mount Olympus and Kodak, was the forerunner of the small Four Thirds (MFT) system created by Mount Olympus and Panasonic. The device size was similar, however not like the mirrorless MFT cameras, the Four Thirds cameras maintained the mirror-box found in DSLR cameras and weren’t a lot of smaller than their APS-C DSLR counterparts.
