2 years ago |- Faster low light focus
- No banding on high ISOs/better de-banding algorithms
- Charging over USB, without adapters
That’d be my personal wish list.
Well we were also promised the new Pannay “gapless” sensor. That would be huge if true.

2 years ago |Exactly!
and everything would be combined into one camera!

2 years ago |- Charging over USB, without adapters
This is not a novel and innovative feature.

2 years ago |What about:
- detachable LCD (= remote control)
- app store for custom applications
- dual EVF for unique 3D camera GUI
- liquid nitrogen cooled sensor

2 years ago |xaxa, while I’m a right-hander, I’ve wondered about this before. Guess this would be an instant hit!

2 years ago |Unfortunately maybe it is yet done (I think there is an exakta model)…
most of the left handed devices have been done before, as the POIUYT keyboard and so on.
just a joke to ease the waiting …

2 years ago |It’s hard, and exciting, to speculate about something we haven’t ever seen before. :p A digital rangefinder-type compact a la the Panasonic patent? The conflicting rumor reports may mean different camera configurations, but all part the same new system, pointing to … maybe the fully-modular Oly out earlier than expected?
Exciting times. Don’t leave us hanging admin!

2 years ago |Like I guessed before – EVF and OVF
That would be something new, right?
Open source so that the art filters could be made by anyone who knows how to program it.

2 years ago |I’m not into 3D yet, especially not for photography. But I’m still waiting for some high-quality HDR-in-a-shot stuff.
Also I’m still convinced dials and buttons and (E)VFs are superior to menus and displays – but that’s more retro than scifi
And yes, I’m waiting for full frame sensors to become mainstream.
Last not least: lenses. High quality, affordable price. Unspectacular from the outside, yet still hard to build.

2 years ago |I care most about the E-5 right now. I might even consider buying an Olympus m4/3 body if they improve the EVF and offer some small, fast prime lenses.

2 years ago |Ready for the show? I don’t know… It’s quite a long time we are waiting… we had rumors about mirrorless solutions, about fuji sensor, about 3d, about electronic shutter, rumors about primes, fast primes, pancakes lenses… we had rumors about everything but still no real products!
In the while Sony delivered 4 new “reflex” and 4 new lenses. Moreover Sony delivered embedded panoramic and HDR functions, too.
Whatever Olympus will show during next weeks needs to be really amazing in order to fight against Sony. Personally I would appreciate stunning dynamic range and a much better AF on the E-5 (single + continuos mode). In addition I WANT the PROMISED 100mm.

Agreed — in spite of myself I am impressed by Sony’s recent barrage of innovation, and can do nothing more than stare blankly at their dynamic range and high-ISO performance. Still, I have mixed feelings. The competition (hopefully Oly/Panny) will have to do something truly exciting after this! The longer they’re taking, the more I feel they’re building up to something great.

2 years ago |last time Olympus/Panasonic said some “never seen before” features they launched micro four thirds…
My guess is downloadable apps to customise your camera (hopefully source code will be open)…
Apps that would be available would be on board photo editing…
Custom art filters including pseudo fisheye, impossible lenses (like flaming pear’s flexify 2), mosiacs, gradient maps etc
Customisable intervalometer in app form for film/animation etc…
Just got to find the Four Thirds Apps store online now!

Oh, as an after thought? f/0.95 SHG zoom lenses.
1) 30 stops worth of dynamic range.
2) ISO value range of 100 to 512k.
3) High ISO values as clean as base ISO and dynamic range does not decrease.
4) AF that’s even better than what Canon, Nikon or whatever has to offer for the next 5 years.
5) Lava and water proofing up to 100m.
6) Able to withstand a bullet fired from a Barret M82A1
7) Auto White Balance that is even better than the best of the best in the next 5 years.
Will it have the name E-5?
2 years ago |If one would believe all these stratospheric rumours, the chance is that one will be disappointed when the camera finally materializes.
There should be an interesting space left for a vendor that has a long history of great innovations. So my hope is still here, for new surprises to come.

2 years ago |ET I think you forgot:
-Easily pocketable
-Internet enabled
-Over 200k apps
-Inc phone, GPS, sat nav, music player
….. Wait a minute, I think this has been done before…. Oh no, 1-9999mm zoom too!!!

2 years ago |I am thinking Oly added X-ray vision like the glasses that used to be advertised in old comic books.
How about an adapter to attach the E-5 to a bellows, extra full-frame size plate film, and a manual hand-controlled shutter using a lens cap for Matthew Brady-style 1860s photography?

Damn thats a must have in the new E-5

2 years ago |Why would anyone want USB charging in lieu oa a wall charger? Oly switched to USB charging on the 8000 Tough, which I thought was a terrible idea. You can no longer charge a spare while using the camera unless you buy an optional charger. Lame!
I can see Oly’s motivation though, save $2 per unit, and possibly sell some accessory chargers at $40 per…
I remember reading something about the Navy SEALS having a fully waterproof DSLR a long time ago. I’m still waiting for one of those to hit the market, though it’d have to come with one hell of a warranty.
As to the lava proof camera, that’d be pretty neat. I’m in Hawaii and that’d be useful to me. Too bad I’m not lava proof…

2 years ago |Karli:
In terms of detachable LCD, you essentially have it now. I believe all of the micro 4/3rds cameras have live view VGA output. Just plug in the video cables that came with your camera, and you have an instant detachable viewfinder. I bought a Wolverine MyMovie pocket videocamera, and it has video input (most of the devices in that class don’t, but if you search around, you can find one), and I can hook my E-P2 up to it and use the video camera away from the camera. My application is camera on a pole. The Olympus Pens are a little problematical in that the E-PL1 doesn’t support the wired shutter release, and there is no pre-made cable made that combines video out and shutter release. But for short distances, I can use a mechanical shutter release.
Edgaras:
Yeah, it would be nice if Olympus open sourced it, I just don’t think they are the company that would really appreciate it and run with it (BTW, I’ve been working on GPL’ed software since about 1988). However, there were some posts over at Divxx about people trying to figure out how to do the hack ala Panasonic GH1. In terms of Panasonic, given they’ve changed the GH1 to be (temporarily) unhackable, they definately don’t grok open source.
Karli:
On app store, not only do I think Olympus doesn’t get open source, I think they don’t get the idea of add-on software that much either. But who knows, maybe the young turks are going to kick out the old guard.
Dummy00001:
In terms of USB charging, I doubt it. The micro 4/3rds cameras use more juice than the pocket cameras, and so it would take a long time to charge at 5 volts.
