SLRmagic lens update (with new 12mm fast lens coming)

FacebookShare

The SLRmagic company sent me a new email to say they will soon release more new Micro Four Thirds lenses. The next lens should be a fast 12mm prime. They didn’t told me how fast but I hope that it will come as close as possible to the Avenir CCTV Lens (Click here to see it on eBay) which has a f/1.2 aperture. Reminder: All those SLRmagic lenses are cheap-quality non-professional manual lenses. But they are cheap and do have a Micro Four Thirds mount (there is no need for adapter). If you are looking for a professional wide angle lens you should go for the new Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 pancake or wait for the next Olympus wide-pancake lens which will be announced during the next few months!

P.S.: Currently there are two SLRmagic lenses on eBay (Sold by the producer)
35mm f/1.7 (Click here) 26mm f/1.4 “Toy” Lens (Click here)

Here’s hoping the 12mm will have “TOY LENS” on the front like the 26mm…I received notice that mine has shipped. Looking forward to taking pics with it!

Quite a surprise…that’s almost no 12mm CCTV lens possible to cover m4/3 sensor. If the answer is yes, that might be the only one I would like to buy from this company. Or simply say, it is not a CCTV at all…

C-mount lens needs to be at least 25mm to cover the sensor of M43…. and 35mm or above for NEX

Yes, in fact the CCTV lens that is mentioned on ebay says:
“*Note: Cannot use on M4/3 cameras”

how bad is the coverage though?

Hi ulugeyik! You might don’t know that you can buy an adapter to use C-mount lenses on MFT cameras. The problemis the huge vignetting you get using that lenses. So as you see this is not bad coverage…you are simply wrong ;)
P.S.: Search for C-mount lenses on youtube and you will find plenty of GH1 video taken with those lenses!

      • Admin, I am usually of your opinion, but here I think you underestimate the problem: Coverage of a lens usually goes up with focal length. It is very easy to build a 50mm that covers m43, and really hard to do this with a 12, 10 or 9mm lens.

If you read the specs of these lenses, they typically start
covering m43 at around 25mm. Shorter lenses are typically intended for much much smaller CCTV sensors.

There is a company called Doctor Optics in German. It makes a 8mm f/2.8 lens with 21mm image circle that almost cover m4/3 sensor. However, it costs 900 EURO each and is made by order. If you really need an wide angle, I think the 7-14mm zoom is already good enough for your desire of ultra wide. What I still wonder is will SLRmagic still selling “cheapo” lens, as usual. I really can’t wait to see it.

  • My SLRmagic 26mm f1.4 “Toy Lens” arrived yesterday!! Time so far to take a few sample images with Lumix G1.
