Sony kills Bayer sensors: Will Olympus next High End OMD use the new APCS (active pixel color sampling) sensor?

Share

What you see here on top is a spec sheet describing a new Sony 1.5-inch sensor. But the one Big news here is that this is the first Sony APCS sensor (yes APCS and not APS-C!). APCS stands for “Active-Pixel-Color-Sampling“. This works unlike current Bayer sensors where you combine four R-G-B-G pixels to get 1 single pixel of color information. In Sony’s new APCS sensor every pixel manages to get the full color information. And unlike Sigma foveon sensors it doesn’t need three layer of pixels. It does all with one single layered array of pixels. The new Sony sensor design will bring the following advantages:

– Bigger pixels (higher Dynamic Range and Lower Noise level at all ISO’s)
– Possible to increase megapixel resolution further
– Less processing power needed (no interpolations between pixels needed and faster readout time)
– Increased color fidelity
– No anti aliasing filter needed. No moirè.
– sensor is also ideal for monochrome shooting.

The new Sony APCS sensor is expected to be announced early 2015. It will be first used on the Z4 smartphone and will be launched on cameras later on.

Sony-Olympus:
That news matters because as we know Olympus has access to Sony sensor expertise. I think it’s highly likely that Olympus will launch a High End OMD camera using that kind of tech maybe in around one year already? In theory the new Sony sensor has the potential to bring a big jump forward in terms of Image Quality. I hope Olympus will grab the chance!

birdcage

Lockcircle announced the new Birdcage for the GH4 which will sell for $399,00 (€ 379,00). Here is the full info:

PRESS TEXT:

The BirdCage is an innovative cage design for the latest mirrorless Lumix GH4 and Sony A7 Series cameras with the incredible weight (featherlite!) of 51 grams ( 1.79 oz.). BirdCage features exclusive LockCircle “Asymmetrical Cage Design” for right hand grabbing and camera control with original camera ergonomics.
A “featherlite cage like a camera glove” was the main concept in the creative and engineering process, because now powerful cameras with 4K features are incredibly small and lighweight and most of the cages in the market has more weight than the camera itself!
Designed for confortable grip and action, leaving on the left side of the camera all the  production accessories mounting, the BirdCage is at the center of what we call Modular Production System.
BirdCage integrates the popular LockPort (micro to full-size HDMI port saver), and a system of plates for different set-up’s and Positive-Lock Mounts (EF and F Mount lenses don’t rotate when mounting, but just the internal mounting bayonet) for precise follow-focus work without annoying lens play on the bayonet mounts.
The “monolitic” mount concept is available also for the popular MetaBones mount adapters adding “rock-solid” tough mounting with the BirdCage MetaPlate.
Camera mounting is totally improved with several double sized threads and also camera balancing is improved.
For Lumix GH4 is available also a special BirdCage GH4 Swivel for total action of the camera LCD.

BirdCage Highlights:
– incredible lightweight, only 51 grams (1.79 oz.) with Twin-Baseplate (featherlite concept)
– innovative Asymmetrical Cage Design for better camera handling
– right hand grabbing and camera control with original camera ergonomics – handheld confortable grip and action
– rock solid accessories mounting  with n° 28 (34 for A7) 1/4”  and n° 3  3/8” threaded holes for accessories mounting
– standard Twin-Baseplate offering several mounting choices (ultra-low, rised)
– Modular Production System concept, many innovative accessories will follow soon
– cnc machined from billet aluminum, black velvet hard surface finish and stainless steel hex screws
– LockPort integrated micro to full-size HDMI adapter (port saver)
– improved camera mounting with better center balance (double screw size threads)
– MetaPlate for serious Metabones locking (no bayonet play and heavy-duty monolitic mounting)
– IMS Plate for P+S Technik Positive-Lock Mounts for cinema style lens mounting
for superior follow–focus work and “monolitic” lens locking to the camera
– Lumix MFT-Mount to PL Mount, Canon EF and Nikon F with exclusive PLS Positive-Lock System
– Sony E-Mount to PL Mount, Canon EF and Nikon F with exclusive PLS Positive-Lock System

(FT5) E-M5 successor to be announced first week of February. Bit different from the looks!

A small correction on the OMD announcement period. It will be announced to the public the first week of February and not end of January as previously stated. No big deal :)
Anyway, the new OMD is definitely the E-M5 successor although I have been told it will be a bit different from the looks! Specs are yet not 100% reliable but for now this is what I got from an anonymous source:

It will be E-M5 successor with weather sealing and what is really important, it will be GH4 competitor, we are currently focusing on video capabilities, 4K is definitely FT5, and there will be option for 24/25/30 fps as well.
