Olympus E-5 vs Olympus E-3 image comparison (DSLRmagazine)
UPDATE: The image from DSLRmagazine has been removed. Maybe because this were image samples taken with a preproduction camera.
DSLRmagazine posted the following image comparison between the new Olympus E-5 and the older Olympus E-3.
UPDATE2: First small size High ISO samples (Thanks “olddo”):
- 3200 ISO: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=5151873&fbid=445692388072&id=144882513072
- 6400 ISO: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=5153998&fbid=445829473072&id=144882513072
Any comments?

CallaWolf
2 years ago |Not sure how you come to that conclusion…there is a marked improvement in DR, as far as I’m concerned.

2 years ago |Are you maybe confusing the images? I can hardly see any difference at all. The bottom rows look better on the E-5 to my eyes.
Adrian
2 years ago |The images made with E-3 are overexposed. If you look on the top, on the white object where it is written Kodak, you will see that it is burned.
So the test is not corect. It is in favour of E-3.

I discussed with our local Oly rep, I was asking why almost no Oly camera were available in shops here. The answer is that Olympus will withdraw itself form std DSLR business, they will only produce few DSLR in the future with minor improvements to allow Oly 4/3 lens owner to keep using their lenses. All technology will be derivated from micro 4/3 which does not sound good to me.

2 years ago |So much for the better ISO-performance: E-3 kicks the sh*t out of E-5… E-5 has slightly better DR and sharpness though, but overall E-3 is better, because of much better ISO-performance. GJ Olympus…

It is sad that it does not have ISO 50. I got to like night shoting with long exposure. Better DR helps. But considering that base ISO is likely 200….

I feel those Olympus R&D guys who wanted to create something big but the corporation just wont let them. No money will be “wasted” on 4/3. It hasn’t been for a while, it seems. Too bad.
I don’t know how people behind Olympus’ desk can smile when they show the E-5 to the world on Photokina…

2 years ago |If there was any doubt that the e-5 was at least a year late, & $500 more at launch take a look at the D7000. One of the things I had been looking forward to on the e-5 was 14bit raw, but I have seen no mention of it anywhere as of yet.

2 years ago |The difference in chroma noise at higher ISO’s could also be down to different NF settings for all we know. The following may be a sigh: at ISO400 (and even ISO200), the E-3 already shows some blue blotches in the top image and the E-5 doesn’t. But after ISO800 it stays similar, whereas on the E-5 it increases drastically.
I know that some people seem to think that high ISO is the only valid parameter for IQ (even some reviewers only test that part!), but what about sharpness and detail?
At every ISO step, the E-5 shows tons more detail than the E-3. Of course at the lower end this is much more obvious. Look carefully at the ISO100 example to see what I mean.

2 years ago |I will continue to enjoy my E-3. It will produce great photos until it dies but I won’t waist my time and money with a company that will not support my purchase in the near future. We have been thrown a bone by Oly. The E-5 will help fund the R&D for m43. So, Nikon here I come.

2 years ago |e5 is very good up to iso 400, then obvious loss in resolution from 800 onwards. Kind of what I would have expected from ep sensor and not what I want from something the size and price of a d700. Trouble is I still cant find anything to touch a 50-200 aperture and size wise. Im also deeply frustrated by the sense that this is it for these wonderful 43 lenses and I just feel doubtful that Ol will produce anything with the same quality for m43.
Neville

justin
2 years ago |fist of all
calm down as those are pre-prod..
There are obviously much more detail in the E-5 files up to 800 especially
In the white areas there a HUGE PROBLEM though @1600 there with the E-5 in the shadow areas,
There must Be something wrong (noise reduction?/auto gradation?, both Olympus-classics…)
the blue dots are inacceptable for a body Of this class (even Olympus would be not dumb releasing
something like this to the market…)
even the EPL-1 did better in all the reviews.. guys who had
Hands on with the E-5 cam, report no banding and an chroma noise up to 3200 at least (of course there
Will be some natural noise, but not the kind of we had on the E-3 @ 3200…
So I’m pretty sure, this does not reflect the final verdict,
Reviews will tell the truth, soon…

2 years ago |The E-5 is a sop to loyal 4/3rds owners. It’s meant to serve those who still wish to use their lenses BUT I believe it will be the last 4/3rds model. Olympus have sent a signal with this body and are letting the faithful down as lightly as they can.
And those HG and SHG lens collections? They aren’t fully compatible with the m4/3rds bodies at present and that will only get worse as the technology evolves.
The problem is Olympus gets more profit from m4/3 than it does with 4/3. The rest is logic.
Not a good time to be a 4/3rds owner.
Dummy00001
2 years ago |> They aren’t fully compatible with the m4/3rds bodies at present and that will only get worse as the technology evolves.
That’s why I personally think that it is premature to discard the Oly’s 43. If anybody at Oly would make the decision to abandon the 43 in favor of m43, that would be the most unwise business decision.
People who have lenses would need new bodies. People who have bodies might need new lenses. With the existing versatile 43 lens catalog, discarding all the past investments would be simply irresponsible. That is part of value of the company, and discarding it overnight might simply devalue Oly enough to drive it into bankruptcy. They are publicly traded company after all.
43 might get pushed back, being developed on the back burner, but I’m pretty sure that it will be supported further. And it’s not that any revolutionary development happened in dSLRs in past 3+ years – no, AF still wont work without light – so “slow day” R&D is quite okay IMO.
Steve H
2 years ago |No “revolutionary” development? Maybe not in the sensor/etc (unless you count what Sony is doing with the new Alphas), but the advent of video is pretty revolutionary… and Olympus blows it by not going 1080p. If everyone else can do it, why not Olympus? It was a big mistake, I think.
What about other technological advances? Such as wireless? Wifi connectivity would be amazing and incredibly valuable. Being able to run Olympus Studio from a laptop wireless would be fantastic. It just doesn’t seem like it’d be that hard to implement. Put a Wireless N chip in the damn thing.
And, with Wireless… maybe you could have built in REAL wireless flash control not this crappy line of sight garbage that the cameras currently have. Why couldn’t they control flashes with WiFi? All they’d have to do is develop a receiver to slide the FL-36R and FL-50R into and then the camera could control them with radio wireless not this nearly worthless line of sight crap. Why should we have to use a Pocket Wizard when the technology is readily available to just put it in the camera?
1080p video and wireless are two things that would have made me buy this camera in a heartbeat. What they’ve offered… well, it just isn’t all that exciting.

2 years ago |The GOOD NEWS is that ISO 100 FINALLY looks EXTREMELY GOOD, this was exactly the last ‚bang‘ of detail I missed from most (from my 5D) when I changed back to the Oly E-3 (for the lenses..) I don’t know if there are people with similar experiences…
The chart also confirms, that the E-3 had a problem ESPECIALLY at iso 400, but
Performed better that many would like to admit at iso 800 + 1600… (3200 on the E-3 was just emergencies an completely useless…)
So overall positive, let’s see what the final firmware does. I predict usable ISO 3200 for the E-5 (should be no problem with the sensor..and the right tweaks)
For the job I use iso 100-400 99% of the time, but I absolutely NEED superb performance (not only good…) in this area, every bit more is of course a PLUS.
Patric
2 years ago |Agree to that Justin. ISO 100-400 looks really good and the level of detail is also really good. I would like to test the E-5 with my ZD 150/2.0 and ZD 50/2.0. I almost never use ISO higher than 800 on my E-3.

2 years ago |This may be a bit offtopic. Nikon announced the D7000. Check it out. It’s the E-5 killer. It doesn’t have a rotating display or IS in body. In any other respect, it beats the E-5. Oh, and it costs 500 Euros less than the E-5.
I hope that will put even more pressure on the E-5 and make it cheap enough to compete. When it costs about the same as the D7000 I will buy it – if I haven’t defected to Nikon until then.
Dummy00001
2 years ago |> This may be a bit offtopic. Nikon announced the D7000. Check it out. It’s the E-5 killer.
Nikon better announce some 12-60 killer at say $500.
Problem with sensors/bodies are Oly specific.
CaNikon’s weak point are the lenses. In the times when I was buying my E-520, it was the only kit at the price with decent lens(es) included. Reading the 400D and D80 kit reviews, all recommended to ebay the kit lenses immediately (or buy other bundles). None of my friends (like me, amateurs) are 100% happy about at least one affordable lens they own.
> When it costs about the same as the D7000 I will buy it – if I haven’t defected to Nikon until then.
I would defect to CaNikon only if I stop being amateur and go enthusiast. They have really lots of /interesting/ lenses for all possible niches. But as long as I remain an amateur, nothing beats the convenience of the Oly zooms. (Neither I have to worry about compatibility or vignetting – was a great plus to me as a beginner.)
Crazy
2 years ago |I really don’ understand.
When you are speaking about DSLR you are speaking about a whole system, not for a special camera. In that case you are talking about a P&S or something like that.
Olympus system only advantage is the use of any lens you think about. That is the key point of the system. You decide if that matches your expectations.
All the other stuff which has been slowly accomplished are collaterals.
Tobias W.
2 years ago |Exactly. We’re talking about a system here. And Olympus has already announced that they are going to TERMNINATE their DSLR system. It’s a matter of time. When MFT is ready to offer faster AF and better EVFs then there won’t be any need to offer a SLR anymore. The E-5 is going to be the last DSLR from Olympus, that’s most likely.
I’m not really convinced that putting heavy, long lenses in front of tiny bodies will be an equally good experience. So, I’m not considering MFT as an alternative of FT. Sorry. The natural thing to do is take a look where to migrate to. And the D7000 seems like a good place to start. I’m not that familiar with Nikon lenses, so it’s nothing more than an initial idea. But if the price for the E-5 doesn’t drop to a more acceptable range then I’ll do the math and start comparing how much budget I need to accumulate (also through selling my Olympus stuff) to get comparable Nikon lenses on a D7000.
I’m pretty optimistic though that the E-5 will be extremely slow-selling at this price which will force Olympus and dealers to drop the price eventually. I’ll be traveling to the States early next year, that will be a good time to check again and take advantage of the currency exchange rate.
scott

2 years ago |Oly also did not say there would be more 4/3 D-SLRs. That is the problem some of us have right now. I was hoping that Oly would signal their commitment to further 4/3 camera development by releasing a high end flagship and some 4/3 lenses to fill in the holes left from Sigma’s exit of telephoto zooms.
Oly has not expressly said that they are abandoning the 4/3 system. However, neither has Oly signaled a long-term commitment to the platform and systems. Sometimes silence is deafening.
No one wants to make major purchases of NEW system equipment if the system is likely to be only half-heartedly supported in the future. I have not seen enough of a commitment to 4/3 to give me the confidence to drop cash on HG and SHG lenses, and I have been a loyal Oly customer for 10 years. Oly digital cameras are the only digital cameras that I have ever had.
I have an E-30, FL-36R, FL-50R, EC-14, EC-20, EX-25, HLD-4, 9-18, 18-180, 70-300, 14-42, 40-150 3.5-4.5, 40-150 4-5.6, Sigma 135-400, Sigma 50-500.
I wanted to add some HG and SHG lenses, but not if the 4/3 system is essentially end of life. Using Pens with something like the Bigma is just plain silly. Ergonomically, the weight of the Bigma lens would vastly overwhelm the small Pen bodies.
I am by no means a pro photographer and probably not even a good amateur, but I do enjoy taking pictures with the equipment. Costly financial investment in equipment is not a problem if the system is likely to be around for a long time to come.

All (Nikon)pro’s I know use the D300 upwards (D700 or D2x or D3′s so to say..) because PRO’s don’t mind for body size/weight and specs, they need a stury body, serious size, fast external controls, iq which delivers be it at iso 100 or 50 or whatever low iso is available, which in the ideal case didn’t change too much over the years… The Nikon F100 still feels the same as a D700 in use. I don’t see the D7000 is a E-5 killer, it doesn’t even competer or even come close, Nikon glass just doesn’t match oly glass. I’ve been there before, so I know what I’m talking about.
finally nikon and pentax copied the sturdy weathersealed from oly, but they have few, IF ANY serious(!) weathersealed LENSES to offer… they just keep ticking boxes on the specsheet. if the E-5 will be priced around 1200 to 1300 which will happen sooner than oly likes, it will be one of the most interesting offers out there.. it’s not the single camera it’s the complete system offering which makes the difference, imo oly has a pretty unique standpoint in the market and is on a good way to gain some lost respect back.

2 years ago |This has already been said regarding the DSLR magazine comparison, and w/o regard to pre-production vs production models and presuming the exposures were the same (they would not bias it for something that silly, I can’t imagine):
Here’s my 2 cents…
RE: the DSLR mag the image at 200% in CS5
- Under ISO 400 the E-5 detail IQ is better in highlights, shadows are much cleaner and more consistant (not better DR, just no banding)
- ISO 800 is rendered much better. Banding not entirely eiminated but very much reduced. Shadow noise level very acceptable (E-3 barely acceptable). Midtone noise about the same.
ISO 1600 – still has problems with banding (see bottom of image).
It does look like there is a 1/3 or so stop shift in exposure, which could be a difference in the sensor sensitivity (???).
From this, should we conclude that we effectively gained a stop in terms of noise performance, but need another 1/3 stop or so to get equivalent exposure?
We don’t have EXIF,
Noise performance in shadow on the Facebook examples looks damned good at

2 years ago |Ok I am going to try and put my thoughts in one post. I own an E3 (actually 3) 5dmkII and 7d. Each camera does different things. I never pick one over the other for IQ. They all perform great for professional prints. (i don’t pixel peep. I don’t have time and don’t care)
I went to a seminar in July. They had sensor cleaning things they were trying to sell. They said they would look at each of our cameras and show us the dirt on our sensor. I had my E3 and 5dll there. I have had the E3 since it came out (old) They couldn’t find one spot on it. My 5dll is 3 months old. They found 3 big spots on it. (enough with that)
We went to the beach last weekend to do family portraits . My wife was using the E3 I was using the 5Dmll (I only have one set of SHG and I wanted to shoot some video)
She was shooting the 35-100 2.0 @ 1/125 @ f3.5 @ ISO 200
I was shooting the 70-200 2.8 @ 1/250 @ f7.1 @ ISO 800
both of these are the same exposure and the same DOF
why the shutter speed difference?
If you know anything about Olympus you will understand and appreciate the IS. The IS on the Canon lens is not even close to the Olympus. Shooting at a focal length of 200 on the beach with the wind blowing you need to be around 1/250 especially with a child involved.
Why the difference in f stop? Canon FF sensor has 1/2 the depth of field of Olympus at the comparable focal length. My wife was able to go down to 3.5 and still get all 3 of the family members in sharp focus. However I know with the Canon I need to be at 5.6 for the same shot but I chose to go up to 7.1 because I wanted our images to match
My point is yes Canon has better IQ at ISO 800 over the E3 but I do not need the Hi ISO on the E3. Most people do not understand this.
Now Concerning the 7d. This is a nice camera and I pull it out when I want to shoot sports or when I need more focal length. The 1.6 crop factor will drive you crazy if you are use to shooting FF or 4/3rds.
Olympus has a different philosophy. Canon and Nikon are on the same path. All 3 are great cameras. I love my E3 and I get disappointed if I cant use it and that is a rare occasion. With their philosophy and lenses you can easily compete with 7d or 5dmll with the new E5.

However I know with the Canon I need to be at 5.6 for the same shot but I chose to go up to 7.1 because I wanted our images to match”
My comment is sort of going to be off topic regarding the subject of this thread, but I’m glad to see someone point out that the greater depth of field is an advantage at times too. It seems when 4/3 is discussed, DOF is only ever spoken of as a disadvantage, but I find it to be an advantage at least as often as a disadvantage for the shooting I do. I shoot wildlife with my E-600 and a Tokina ATX 100-300mm F4 for Minolta Manual focus. In most cases I want it to be reasonably open so I can have a fast shutter speed. Trying to manual focus that thing, I’m glad for every extra inch of DOF I can get. I suppose if I bought an autofocus lens (and trust me, I’d like to have a zuiko 50-200) this is somewhat less of an issue, but on my budget, I’m not sure where I’m going to find a 100-300mm f4 for about $100 like mine is, and it’s pretty good glass.

2 years ago |If anything, your experience shows that the Canon can adapt to many situations and get the same results as the Oly: you just stop down the lens or up the ISO. Now, it is not possible the other way around, for example when you want the shallow DOF of a f/1.4 lens or the versatility of a wide T/S lens. Where are the Oly equivalents to those lenses? So FF gives you more options. At the same weight and size, and even prize. In fact, you could get the 70-200 f/4 zoom to get a, you just proved it, real equivalent to your 35-100 f/2.
The E-3 was no more than a Nikon D200 wannabe. The E-5 is even worse. I sold my E-1 when they released the E-3 and seeing where 4/3 was heading: no size, weight or price benefit over FF, and not a single fast prime other than the 50 f/2. Glad I ditched Oly back then.

2 years ago |1) No offense, but you come across like someone who should not be on these boards at all. A fanboy, if you will. Or simply anti Olympus.
2) An F4 lens is an F4 lens. You will need slower shutter speeds and higher ISOs. Depth of field is only one aspect. You cannot compare an F2 lens to an F4 lens based on DOF.
3) The comments expressed above are from a person with 5 system cameras. A 5DMk2, a 7D, and 3 E3s. How many do you have to make a wise comparison?
Most people who are professionals and are not caught up in a 1989 Nintendo vs Sega mentality will appreciate the benefits of each tool and pick what they like. Alot of actual professionals who use 4/3s like the system, the lenses, the DOF, etc. They are also not fanboys of any brand and will speak well of the products that work well for them regardless of manufacturer.

2 years ago |1. You have to stop down on the Canon to get sharp images
2. Why would you want to shoot at 800 ISO when you can shoot at 200
3. You can have your 1.4 show me a situation that you would need 1.4 Its less than a 2″ DOF. Macro maybe? Stick a Sigma 105 2.8 on there and you have less than .5″ DOF on the Olympus.

So 150 f/2 and 300 f/2.8 doesn’t count as fast primes?

dirty senzor thats why I love my e-3 works good at any conditions and after dirty conditions.
The rest, well yes e-3 can as good as 5 dmark II whan you don’t need the FF size senzor. (aka the resolution or DOF or dynamic range).
The FF senzor will always beat 4/3 in some situations, this situations aren’t important (oft) for me … so I’m happy with e-3.
The problem I see is whan I compare e-5 versus d7000 what nikon released. The progress is mutch bigger by nikon and not thx to larger senzor …. (olympus is stagnating)

2 years ago |Exactly. More debth of field at the same exposure. WOw who woulda thought that was an advanatage? It really helps in dark situations when 2.8 on canon or nikon is not acceptable.

It is annoying when you go to F2 on an FF camera at 90mm and the model’s right eye is in focus but not anything else, hmmm?

Read in the comments, Judy says: we’re seeing about a 2 stop improvement in the signal to noise ratio so the e5′s 1600 looks just a hair noisier than the e3′s 400 setting.
I hope this is true!

Looks like DSLR removed the photo (video too?) at Olympus’ request..not what they wanted to represent or in violation of some agreement or another?

2 years ago |I’ve decided to stick with Oly. I’m getting great quality pix out of my E-520 and 12-60, so I think some more lenses and maybe an E-30 or E-5 are in my future. I’d you are dumping your system:

Just remember, the Nikon 7000 has just been released, so I figure that E-30 is worth about $350 now, right? So you send it right on over to me, I’ll be happy to scrap it for you, recycle it, whatever.

2 years ago |Antonio, 35-100 @ f2 on Olympus is equivalent to 70-200 f2. You don’t multiply the aperture x2. That’s why the Olympus lenses are such a comparative bargain. Not many alternative 70-200 f2 lenses out there for other systems. Olympus has the definite advantage.
Scott
2 years ago |Actually you do multiply the aperture x2 but not for exposure only for DOF

2 years ago |Before I had an E-510 and an E-410 and I loved them but then I sold them because of Mpixel rush and better High Iso performace of Canon. So I bought Canon 450D and 40D.
After a bit I used them I was really complaining… first of all these cameras weight much more and it was harder to carry both of them around for long time, secondo even if higher iso was better I never noticed big differences between them… so I sold them again and bought E-620 and E-450 and now I’m really happy.
want to know my opinion? Every camera is good to make good photos, the only difference is what a photographer can take out of it.
What for 16 or 18mpixel? Do you need mega crops or to print wall size photos?
Jason
2 years ago |I would buy the E-620 any day over a basic Canon camera. Canon’s basic models cannot compete – they may sell more, but that is not a function of quality, just a function of branding and marketing….
Jaw
2 years ago |Those are 6000 Canadian dollars. And it’s deductible. I have two e-3 so oly was my main and back up gear. I’m sorry to leave oly but they gave me no choice. We have some very dark churches in Canada !

2 years ago |I own the E-620 as well and, after buying a few amazing Oly lenses, i am very happy with my gear. The E-620 is flexible, easy to use, light and provides good quality pics, for an amateur like me.
I see some similarities in the new E-5, off course this new camera is already better regarding quality and features. So i would like to upgrade but: the E-620 costs €350,- the E5 will cost €1700,-. I think i better wait a year to see what will go regarding price. And i will also follow the reviews of Canon 60D and Nikon D7000 to begin with.
to Jaw, i understand your step over, but why didn’t you wait? The E-5 is not yet fully reviewed and tested. The ISO seems to be improved…

2 years ago |I started out doing more work where I could control my lighting situations but not any more. I have to be able to shoot anywhere under any light. And I need faster primes. Oly just doesn’t fit me anymore
Jaw
2 years ago |And, sadly enough, oly is seen as a joke brand to many and the truth is that people who only know canon and nikon don’t consider it a pro brand. So it is a bit of a public image thing as well. I’ll take whatever flak anyone wants to fling at me for that. Clients don’t like it when their uncle bob relatives tell them on their wedding day I’m shooting with a crap brand.
Adam H
2 years ago |i know that this is a bit late, and such, but reading all of these made me realize that no matter what camera you use, it will still get good pictures, and even if that ‘uncle Bob’ says that, when the pictures are then sent to the client, i don’t think anyone else, but a professional photographer, or photo editor, would notice anything that may be slightly off with the photos. it really doesn’t matter what camera you use, it only matters about the results. i use an Olympus E-520, with all kit lenses (only been using it since February, and it is my first camera), and the results after a little editing, or even none at all are still decent.
