Japanaese 2010 system camera sales analysis.
BCNranking posted the digital system cameras sales share of the whole 2010 (To be exact until the 12th of December)! Three Panasonic cameras (the GF1, G2 and the G1) and two Olympus cameras (the E-Pl1 and the E-P1) are into the top 20 of the most sold cameras with interchangeable lenses. The GH2 has come been available since late October only that’s why it didn’t made it into the top 20. There is still a lot to do to catch up Canon and Nikon but as you can see the situtation is changing slowly in favour of the new mirrorless cameras. Do you have any suggetsion to make for Panaosnic and Olympus on how to close the gap between them and the Canikon dominance?

2 years ago |Im just wondering… How long has the NEX been available on the market in Japan? It seems to sell well…
Agent00soul
2 years ago |But the total NEX market share is 8.2% against 15% for m4/3.

2 years ago |In order to dominate the market, pricing approach with right gadzet will deliver it. For instant, GH2 sell at same price to Nex5, what do you think?
there are also many alternative ways, just fulfill end user needs, that is the right ways to success. Put back 25P, put back AF in video tracking
instead of price slashing…

Option #1
1. More better lenses
2. More better lenses
3. More compact lenses
4. EVF
Option #2
1. Drive prices down
2. Drive prices down
3. Drive prices down
4. EVF
Two options because they try to converge few incompatible concepts in the same bodies and they are likely has to be separate due to user requirements: compacts with great IQ vs. dSLR replacement.
A TODO, specifically for Pannay, as a low to mid prio: IBIS.
A TODO, specifically for Oly, as a high prio: “Fix your damm marketing” and “Make a public roadmap of transition from FT to mFT.” Also I would personally love if Oly starts pricing its cameras properly at the launch. The silliness of MSRPs at the same level as the targeted competition doesn’t fly in the Internet age.

2 years ago |The NEXs share of the current market in Japan is underrated in these annual sales percentages because only available for half the year and they besides cutting into GF1 and EPL1. You need to look at the November sales figures to get a better idea of the current situation which is changing constantly. In the latest weekly BCN rankings (go to sonyrumors for link) NEX5 models are #2, EPL1 #9,#15,+ many others, GF2 #10, #21, #37 and NEX3 are #12,#31, #33.
What is significant is the popularity of the new GF2 on sale only since Dec 3rd yet already in #10 place eclipsing the GF1 bargain (now likely out of stock) inspite of pricing significantly higher than either EPL1 (high in Japan) or NEX5. My guess is GF2 would leap to the top of the mirrorless pack if their prices were reduced to say NEX5 level in the near future.

2 years ago |But on the other hand, all camera models have a sales peak some time after introduction and then falls until they are replaced. So the fact that the NEX cameras peaked during November does not indicate that NEX have claimed that market share forever.

2 years ago |Granted most models peak several months after introduction but the BCN figures indicate the NEX has continued to climb at the top to present date inspite of competitive price reductions by Pany and Oly. These rankings and sales indicate that the percentage of mirrorless cameras now increasing back closer to 30% of the interchangeable lens camera market and this is having effect on Canikon, if not on their most popular models certainly for much of their other offerings. With the new better featured mirrorless models coming Canon and Nikon cannot afford to wait this out in hopes the trend will go away.
I am not surprised to see the GF2 prove to be very popular because of its small size in comparison to slower sales or widely aclaimed GH2 with its larger mini DSLR style body.

2 years ago |I would like to see focal distance information trasmitted from the lens to the view finder.
This would help in low light situations.

2 years ago |Don’t they (Panasonic and especially Olympus) understand that they must improve their IQ by working on a much better sensor?
Other competitors are catching up, i.e. Pentax with its K5, and likely Sigma with its newer Foveon sensor.

2 years ago |23.2% market share for mirrorless only 2 years after intro ain’t bad.

2 years ago |Make it a more modular system with defined interfaces. This will protect customers’ investments and induce them to buy additional gadgetry. It is not only about selling cameras. Examples:
Zooming OVF, possibly hybrid
Close-up rings
Additional battery packs
External control monitors
Motorized tripod head, controlled by the camera, for panoramic views
Microscopic tubes

2 years ago |The percentages may be good for mirrorless, but remember BCN ranks only sales in Japan. This doesn’t rank US or European sales where mirrorless receives MUCH less market share. That fact also accounts for some other discrepancies as some bodies released in Japan earlier than world-wide.
My guess, and I believe it’s a pretty solid one, is that when you factor in US and European sales, mirrorless takes much more of a back seat.
