(FT4) Short update: An Olympus lens wider than the Panasonic 14mm will definitely come in May/June! (+POLL)

A short lens rumor update. Another trusted source confirmed that Olympus is about to release a lens that is wider than the current Panasonic 14mm f/2.5 lens. I hope we can soon get some info about the real lens specs.
Last week a new sources told us that Olympus should launch a 12mm lens which is faster than the Panasonic lens.
A question. The picture on top shows one of the upcoming Olympus prime lenses (Could be the rumored 12mm or the 50mm or another lens). Olympus didn’t unveil any detail about the focal length and aperture. I am curious to know what you think about it:

2 years ago |Yeah make it a decent 12mm…doesn’t have to be superfast (unless the price can be made nice) ….for me 2.8 will do with a better IQ than the 14mm Panny (i.e. doesn’t have to be a tiny pancake) but cheaper than the Panny 7-14 zoom and it will be fine in my book.

2 years ago |The curvature and size of the front element suggest a wide focal length and fast aperture (compare it with the tiny element in front of the 14/2.5). It is probably optically corrected for barrel distortion.

2 years ago |The slow pace, not only with lenses, but also with accessory and firmware improvements is really suprising, almost as surprising as some of the design decisions (like first avoiding an accessory port, then placing it at that stupid hotshoe blocking position, then needing to upgrade it after only a couple of months). Or no life view via HDMI etc. No optical zooming viewfinder despite the lag un the EVF viewing.

2 years ago |please can it be less than $500? so sick of looking at wide angle options that cost more than an LX5
Jadakiss
2 years ago |Yeah, I have an LX5, but this lenses might be a good alternative…. I almost always shoot the LX5 at 24mm f2.0 (which is exactly what I hope this lens will have).

2 years ago |I would like to see a 12mm pancake…but the Olympus lens offerings for micro 4/3′s are so lackluster (just not very sharp or good contrast..although they are less expensive), that it probably is not going to impress. (The Panny 14mm isn’t great either…just OK..with added software “tricks”).
12mm is a wide angle lens with big DOF…so I see no reason to get into the f/2 range….
It would be nice to see someone make a small (that is what “micro” 4/3 is all about), very sharp 12mm.
I am guessing that the Oly will be a pretty soft offering…I am never WOWed by any of their lenses.

2 years ago |Who the hell needs a 50mm Lens on a MFT? Are you guys crazy?
12mm 2 or faster for me…
Also please fix the focus of the pancakes.

2 years ago |Another thought….if Olympus is planning on making a more “Pro” Micro 4/3 offering perhaps they will deliver some better glass to go with it. The company does have the capability.
(as far as the 50mm mention…maybe he meant “35mm equivalent” ie 25mm.?).

2 years ago |By an extension of that statement, who the hell needs interchangeable lens on m43?
After thought : I am one of those who do needs a fast 100mm equivalent.

2 years ago |I also think that there’s no immediate need for fast lenses with a long focal length. There is enough legacy glass available that fills that role. I am using old Minolta MD/MC glass for this, for example the excellent Minolta MC 58mm f/1.2. What more can you desire?
I am really curious about the depicted lens. I don’t think it’s the 12mm lens.
Also, I wonder where the E-P3 is right now. It sure is next, isn’t it?

2 years ago |The prototype lens is surely F2 or faster. Look at the images of Panasonic 14mm F2.5 and 45mm F2.8 lenses and you’ll see that the front glass is much smaller. I hope this one is 12 or 14mm, because there are no fast wide options for m4/3, whether native or adapted. In the 100mm equivalent there is that Panasonic Leica 45mm, Zuiko 4/3 50mm and lots of legacy glass …

2 years ago |I find the 1.7/20 to be a joy to use for its speed much more than for the shallow DoF.
at 12 or 14mm, shallow DoF is not really part of the equation, but I’d consider the Olympus over the Panasonic. Bigger and a notch pricier is a compromise I can live with to get an extra stop of light.

2 years ago |For what is out there…20mm f/1.7 is what Micro 4/3 should be ALL about.
Jules
2 years ago |If I had to choose just one lens, so far that would be the one and I am confident that I am far from being the only one.
Now, it is an interchangeable lens system, there is lots of room for different opinion and a market for different lenses.

I have mixed feeling about the Panasonic 14mm, it’s a shame it’s not on par with the 20mm in terms of image quality and sharpness.
For what it’s worth, the Voigtlaender 25mm is also interesting, however that is one expensive piece of equipment for such a narrow use case…

2 years ago |Will be very happy with a 12mm, doesn’t need to be too fast as it will be a landscape and architecture lens mainly (for me).
And if a fast portrait lens comes along too, I will have plenty of reasons to break open my piggy bank!

2 years ago |I have a Panasonic/Leica 45mm f/2.8. LOVE the lens.

Could it be faster? Yes.
Could it be less expensive? YES.
…but it does have autofocus, IS and macro capability…and isn’t too large. It is a great lens and fits nicely into my micro 4/3′s ideal. Small with good quality.

2 years ago |I hoped for a small 50mm/F2 lens but if it is a 12mm/F2 why would that be so much better than the existing petite pancake 14/F2.5 on a mini m4/3? If you need wider for starters just use 16:9 aspect level to get to 25mm 35mm equivalent(at least that is true for GH1 or GH2 not sure how much reduction on others without an oversized multi-aspect sensor) or make a panoramic print?

2 years ago |The lens in this mockup, scaling from the camera has a front element which is about 25mm – that would point to a 50mm f2. It seems a bit unlikely that a 12 would have to be that much longer than the panasonic 14 – even though it might be a bit – and on the whole Olympus seem to like to keep their lenses for this system small and compact. If necessary I think they’d go for a 12mm f2.8 if making an f2 entailed making it much much larger. Also it seems unlikely that a 12mm would have quite as deep a filter thread as this – as I remember my old 24mm OM lens – everything was pretty flush at the front.
The collar design of this is also a bit strange – and I wonder if it is not either collapsible – or perhaps extensible for macro operation. Given how big the 4/3 50mm f2 macro is, I think they may want to do something to make it more compact in m4/3 and one way to do this would be to make the autofocus limited in range – and have the macro option available by manual extension – a bit the way some lenses were in the film era. To have a fully autofocus macro is impossible with all internal focussing – and focussing by moving the whole lens is both slow for contrast AF and results in a big lens. It might just be a non-macro 50mm f2 though with a collar to reduce weight.

2 years ago |i reckon it’ll be the remake of the current zuiko digital 50mm f2.0
the strange looking collar is similar to that found on older macro designs, such as those for leica m mount.
if they make it msc or swd or whatever letter to make it fast AF it’ll be a very nice lens… as long as it’s as good as the current 50 f2
and then add a 12mm f1.8 or 1.4

And maybe the come tele, wide and macro converter in 52mm size to.

2 years ago |I am most interested in seeing the quality of this lens! Has Olympus made a single m43 lens that is better than the Panasonic equivalent? Considering Olympus’ reputation, built in part with some stellar 4/3 glass, the Olympus m43 lens offerings have been mostly a disappointment…

2 years ago |How about the 9-18mm? Great sharpness and tiny compared to the bloated and expensive Panasonic 7-14mm. The Olympus 14-150mm is better than the Panny 14-140mm and MUCH smaller and lighter. It’s a perfect all-in-one. And it is sharper than the Panny 45-200mm (I owned both).
