Robin Wong on Why It’s Time to Update the 13-Year-Old Olympus 60mm Macro Lens

Share

Photographer and OM System ambassador Robin Wong just shared a new video showcasing his macro setup on a jungle hike in Malaysia.  His setup includes the OM System OM-1 paired with the Olympus 60mm f/2.8 Macro, along with the Olympus FL-50R flash and a new AK diffuser gifted by Emily Talpin (another OM System ambassador).

Why Robin Still Loves the Olympus 60mm f/2.8

  • Compact and lightweight: just 185g
  • True 2x magnification in full-frame equivalent
  • Super sharp with high contrast and great micro-details
  • Weather-sealed—essential for rainforest shooting

Robin calls it the must-have macro lens for any Micro Four Thirds shooter. But despite all the praise, he thinks it’s time for a 2025 refresh.

Three Key Improvements Robin Wants

  1. Faster and more reliable autofocus – The current version tends to hunt in high-magnification scenarios.
  2. Less focus breathing – Essential for better results with focus stacking.
  3. AI Insect Detection – A future wish: OM cameras that auto-detect and track insects in-frame, similar to Sony’s bird/animal eye AF.
