Panasonic GH2 vs GH13 (+Canadians are happy and Brits also)

Hunter Richards posted a very interesting GH2 1080/24p codec vs GH13 codec (44mbs 1080/24p hack) image comparison at The GH2 is definitely resolving more detail and at 3.200 ISO the image is almost clean! And Panasonic guru Barry Green explained why the 24Mbs AVCHD codec is better than the 44Mbs: “Even then, this isn’t as good as it gets. The AVCHD in the Gh2 is much better than the GH1’s version, but it’s still not up to the standards that the AF100 can do. Bigger hardware, bigger memory buffers, more efficiency. Even at the same bitrate. I really do hope this dispells once and for all the notion that “more megabits = better footage” because, very frequently, that just isn’t correct. It’s the type of megabits, and how they’re used, that determine the efficiency and how good the final pictures look. The only way you can say “more = better” is if you’re talking about the exact same thing (i.e., AF100 at 21mbs vs. AF100 at 17mbps… in that case, yes, more = better).

Meanwhile our canadian 43rumors readers are sending me many mails because they received the GH2 from Henrys, Downtown Camera in Toronto and other shops. You guys have to explain me why you are the first (non-japanese) to get stuff form Panasonic. I hate you ;)
British readers are the next! Mathers of Lancashire, Amazon UK and other known stores should have the GH2 in Stock next week.
US readers are using the guerrilla strategy with the hope to get the camera sooner or later. They simply preorder at any online store that has the GH2 on list :) Panasonic is now accpeting preorders and so Amazon and Adorama.

P.S.: Let me know if you find the GH2 in Stock in Europe! Thanks!

  • 2nd link in “The GH2 is definitely…” is broken, points to a 404 page.

  • Someone over at the DPReview forum mentioned he spoke to a Panasonic store rep and was told his body-only order would ship out on the 8th. For reference that’s about 9 days earlier than Amazon and (I think) Adorama were told (the 17th), but then maybe it takes 9 days for Panasonic to get boxes from their distribution center out to retailers :D

    I live in Calgary, Canada.
My Camera dealer called me and said that they have my pre-ordered GH2+14-140 bundle. I’ll pick it up tomorrow :-)

    • mw

      Which camera dealer is that?

      • Astrostream

        It’s the Camerastore.

      • Astrostream

I got mine today. The guy said they have more.

  • I’m in Utah. I put in an order yesterday for the GH2 kit (incl 14-140mm lens) with my rep at Samy’s in Los Angeles. She said their shipment would be in next week. Very nice.

You can see a bit of info about GH2 testing at even though they haven’t published their review yet.

In the Noise and Noise Reduction page of their Nikon D7000 review (, you can select the GH2 to compare with from the drop-down lists :).

    • Gianluca

      I’m living in Italy,too.

Most of the retailers in Sweden have also listed the 17:th as release date

Just placed a pre-order on Mathers of Lancashire, they will have stock on Monday of this week but they are going like hot cakes (Panasoinc GH2). Body and 14-140mm lense kit is £1049 bargin!!!!

  • It’s available in France too, but stocks seem very low for the moment (only 1 left on Amazon for example) !

  • This is the second or third time I read “GH13”. Is that a recurring typo, or am I missing something?

    • admin

It is the hacked GH1…it’s called GH13!

    • GH13 refers to the hacked GH1 (version 1.3)

Placed an order with Henry’s in Canada last Friday. It allegedly went out Monday, but today (Thursday) is still in Mississauga, the place of origin, nto even at the US border yet!!! Makes me wonder if I should place another order with Samy’s, as that’s in the state I live in…

  • Andrew

I called Henry’s in Waterloo, ON and they said they had one GH2 in stock which someone had held but didn’t want anymore. Of course, I jumped on it and walked in 30 mins later and picked it up. I also don’t know if this is true, but I had mentioned I heard people starting to get stock around Nov 26th, and salesman said that’s not true; this is something like their third shipment in and they started getting some since October.

  • That just means it was passed off to the USPS. They stop tracking stuff when it hits the border.

    • yosemite

Actually it’s still with Canada Post, hasn’t even left the city of origin yet. Apparently they’re having problems due to large pre-Christmas shipping volume. And I was told that even after it is handed over to USPS it will still be followed in the Canada Post tracking system.

  • Redkite

Mather of Lancashire called me today to tell me that my GH2 has been despatched and I should receive it tomorrow. As a previous contributor said” “GH2 + 14-140 mm lens £1049 – bargain.”

    I’m replacing my GH1 + 14 – 140 mm lens with the GH2 outfit. GH1 already sold.

  • blackeye

anyone got any word from Adorama in NYC? I called and they have no date. Awhile back though, they were saying the same date, Dec 17th. Hope to get it in my hands before Xmas!

  • jose luis

gh2+14-140 and gh2+14-42 stock in spain 6 november.

  • Jerry Suppan

GH2 already alive and well in Japan market already. And, the GF2 releases today 12/3 here too. But then, that assumes you have the advantage to live in, or at least visit, Japan. :-)
