ThePhoBlographer thinks OM Digital should make a Full Frame L-mount OM-3 camera

Share

Micro Four Thirds has become quite a niche system. And sometimes people worry that companies like OM Digital could disappear if they don’t manage to make enough sales. One way to minimise the risk would be for OM Digital to enter the L-mount system, as Panasonic has done. If successful this would also help the MFT system to stay afloat.

ThePhoBlographer thinks a Full Frame L-mount OM-3 camera would become quite popular. This is why:

  • Professionals will want to buy one: OM System is perfect for anyone who wants retro aesthetics, image quality with distinct look and color, and sturdiness. Professional photographers often look for distinct images, and the OM System cameras can offer that.
  • Enhanced image quality: With a full-frame device, photographers can also get better image quality, especially when it comes to dynamic range, low-light performance, and depth of field control.
  • A larger portfolio: A full-frame camera will help OM System to expand its portfolio. This means despite a niche audience, OM System can diversify its catalog.
  • Competitive advantage: If the company joins L-alliance, it can offer something different to users. Both Panasonic and Leica L-mount cameras are for extremely serious photographers. If OM System joins, it will offer a competitive edge thanks to features such as its creative filters and computational photography.
  • More innovation at OM System: The company has not exactly been innovative with the OM3. Their JPEGs are great, but they still lack RAW file versatility. With a full-frame sensor, the company will be forced to work on its shortcomings such as a slow autofocus on people of color in low light.

Do you agree with ThePhoBlographer?

This list clearly shows that compact cameras with a fixed lens are currently the most popular devices! Panasonic really should bring on a new fixed lens LX100 camera!

Phototrend interview with Panasonic

Share

The French magazine Phototrend had a chat with MR. Toshiyuki Tsumura , Executive Vice President and Director of Panasonic ‘s Imaging Business Unit. Here are a couple of take always:

About the Lumix financial he didn’t say much:

the performance of our Imaging division is steadily improving globally.

In terms of investment and R&D, what share does Micro 4:3 represent today compared to full-frame?

Our core strategy is to meet the diverse needs of creators with two mounts: full-frame and micro 4:3, each with distinct features. From an R&D and investment perspective, we will develop and evolve the latest technologies common to both systems, with the exception of the image sensor. We want to improve the development of both systems in the long term, offering full format for those looking for great expressiveness and 4:3″ for those looking for mobility and speed.

Compact L-mount lenses coming:

I believe it is important to enhance the full-frame lens lineup and develop compact lenses suitable for the small Lumix S9 body for now.

About developing new fixed lens cameras with large sensors:

As compact cameras with integrated lenses become more popular, we will continue to consider user needs in this category.
