Global shutter: Samsung will do it? Olympus also!

Share

Global shutter is one of the most requested features of MicroFourThirds user. K-rumors has got some evidence that Samsung is developing such a sensor. Anyway there is not only Samsung working on it. We found a new Olympus patent (published on 03/30/2010). The patent description is pretty complex! The most understandable part is the initial description:

The present invention relates to solid-state imaging apparatus having a concurrent shutter (hereinafter referred to as global shutter) function, and more particularly relates to a solid-state imaging apparatus having a global shutter function so as to be capable of obtaining imaging data having a high image quality.

For those interested to read more about it go here: http://www.freepatentsonline.com/7689113.html

Oh! And if you really want to know everything read the complete patent list with all Sony-Canon-Samsung-Olympus related global shutter patents!

UPDATE: What is a global shutter?
With Global/Synchronous Shutter, all rows in the ROI are reset then exposed simultaneously for a specified time. At the end of the exposure/integration time, each pixel value is transferred immediately to an adjacent storage area to await read-out. The pixel values are then read out row-by-row from storage, building the frame. This use of intermediate storage reduces the gradual overexposure that can occur down the image when the rows are read out directly from the active area.
Because all rows are exposed simultaneously, Global Shutter avoids jagged or blurred affect produced by Rolling Shutter for fact action images. However, because it stops exposure to perform read-out, it does not provide the fastest possible sequence of frames.

(FT3) Two more Olympus MicroFourThirds cameras and first prime lenses during second half of the year

Share

According to our sources Olympus is already working on two new MicroFourThirds cameras.  The first camera to be released should be a PEN and the second camera should be the long awaited very high-end MicroFourThirds model. Both will be announced within the year. The High-End model will arrive later (and Photokina fits perfectly for such a camera announcement).

A new High-End PEN makes sense because the newly announced Olympus E-PL1 is stealing the show of the E-P1 and E-P2.

According to our sources also new prime lenses should come by late 2010. Probably the 50mm (f/2.0 ?) lens will be the first of the series.

One more thing about Panasonic. We are certain Panasonic will launch the GH2 on Photokina but we have no information about the GF2. One new source told us that Panasonic is planning to release the GF2 months after Photokina. But this is a unreliable rumor. I hope one of my trusted sources can tell me more :)

43rumors and mirrorless

Share

Dear readers,

Yesterday I asked you to give your opinion on the need to cover the rumors from more brands with mirrorless camera systems.

As you understood from my comments it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me to “expand” 43rumors coverage on other brands. I started 43rumors I wanted to have a place for FourThirds-MicroFourThirds only.

But I have been surprised to see how many people need a place for general mirrorless rumors and news. So my idea is to create a new mirrorlessrumors.com website and comunity! The website should not only contain the unique rumors from our sources but also become a dynamic network with people sharing reviews, comparisons and tests.

What do you think?

Olympus E-PL1 tests here and there…

Share

Let’s start the new week with the list of all new Olympus E-PL1 reviews:
1) The video above is from digitalrev. I like the fact that they made a “on street” review.
2) Kirk Tuck also tested the camera
3) Crunchgear posted their short review (probably a to short review to become interesting for you)
4) Unlike Cruchgear the hungarian website pixinfo.com posted a very detailled review! It is definitely worthy to play around with their dynamic graphs :)
5) And finally the japanese website trendy.nikkei made a E-PL1 vs GF1 vs E-P1 comparison

If after reading all these reviews you are ready to buy your E-PL1 use one of our affiliate links :)
