New Olympus patent shows innovative double simultaneus focus system

Share

We just found an interesting new patent. It seems that Olympus is working on a double TTL and contrast autofocus system which do work simultaneusly:
It is to be noted that the TTL phase-difference AF and the imager AF have the following characteristics, respectively.
The TTL phase-difference AF is the AF at a speed higher than that of the imager AF.
The imager AF is the AF having a precision higher than that of the TTL phase-difference AF
.”
and
an automatic focusing device is disclosed in which the TTL phase-difference AF is combined with the imager AF to perform focusing control. Specifically, in this automatic focusing device, after coarse control is performed by the TTL phase-difference AF, fine control is performed by the imager AF.

This would be possible with the use of a half mirror which reflect portions of lights to the Phase Detection Sensor.
My speculation: would that camera not be able to record video using the faster TTL autofocus?

That hurts! What Jonathan Wong thinks about the Samsung NX10 (vs Olympus E-PL1)

Share

Jonathan Wong reviewed both cameras, the Samsung NX10 and the Olympus E-PL1. You can read his review on SteveHuffPhoto.com.

In short what he didn’t like about the Samsung NX:
– the AF gets confused easily in low light
– the Auto-ISO programming is AWFUL (Some daft genius at Samsung, however, has decided in their infinite wisdom that a minimum shutter speed of 1/15 is ok!!!)
– the EVF is pretty horrid (pixels galore!)
– the Samsung has a tendency to blow colors out with all the elegance of a rhino in ballet shoes.

And here the conclusion:
For all intents and purposes, this review could end here: the Olympus E-PL1 is a far superior camera.

That hurts!

Panasonic GH1 hack updated.

Share

EosHD.com is keeping us updated with the latest Panasonic GH1 hack news.

The hack enables following features:
– native 24p 1080p recording to the SD card (cannot be played back on the camera)
– patch to enable English language menus on the Japanese model
– 30min clip length limit has been removed
– 24p patches for 720p AVCHD and MJPEG modes

The hacker “Vitaly” (or “tester13”) believes the Panasonic GH1 has a lot more potential than Panasonic is delivering us. Why didn’t Panasonic allow some of the features listed above?
