Some more interesting tidbits about the new OM-1II hardware
OM-1II at Amazon US&CA&EU, BHphoto, Adorama, Om Digital, FotoErhardt, Calumet, WexUK. OM Germany, OM UK, OM, Italy, OM France.
A German reader told me about an interesting news he read on a German blog. Sadly he forgot to send me the link to the blog and I couldn’t find it. So please send me a message if you know this!
He did send me the translated text that is very interesting:
The OM-1 II is faster, it does have more than just a double size buffer:
The OM-1 II has been modified in a few places. The double buffer memory allows you to buffer twice as many images, that’s what we knew already. This is a prerequisite for the ND128. It can therefore not be retrofitted via a firmware update.
However, the decisive difference is somewhere else. The intermediate memory between the Sony pre-processor and the TruepicX has been replaced by a memory that is twice as fast.
Problem: this requires more power and gets hotter. So the camera’s thermal management had to be changed. The camera has a new motherboard and supposedly a new, more energy-efficient display. From the outside, that doesn’t show, but there’s one difference: communication between the sensor and Truepic is twice as fast all of a sudden. And that is what makes the new AI-AF possible. A firmware update for the old OM-1 cannot deliver this performance. So if you think that a firmware update could raise the OM-1 to the level of the OM-1 II, that will not be possible.
Nevertheless, a firmware update can implement the new AF algorithm in the OM-1, even if the OM-1 cannot achieve the speed of the OM-1 II. And of course the GND – it’s a pretty simple piece of software.

OM says it is planning to continue the development of the PEN line!

Dpreview had a chat with Kazuhiro Togashi, OM System’s VP for Brand Strategy and Product Planning. The most important news is that OM System says it’s focusing on outdoor photographers but hinted that the PEN series could yet return to the North American market. As you know the PEN E-P7 is still being produced and sold for the Asian market but it’s no more sold in Europe and America. When asked about the development of new PEN cameras the manager said:
The E-P7 is small, with compact bright lenses, making it highly advantageous for travel photography. Therefore, we’ll reinforce such products in our lineup in the future.
What that “reinforce” means is a bit unclear. There might be an E-P8 for the Asian market only…or they might be seriously considering the return of PEN sales on all worldwide markets. The other statements are repetition of what we heard in the past:
- The focus is on higher end products
- The focus is on creating products for outdoor photographers.
- AI will find it’s way in cameras (like for example AI noise reduction applications)
As you know, I a am a big fan of the idea to make a new PEN-FII…let’s see if my dreams will come true !

Curiosity: Olympus OM-2 review at Kitamura
As you all know by now the film cameras are now trendy again. Many young people are now using film cameras to take images for multiple reasons: First of all many of those cameras are a real beauty and they do not age like digital stuff. The second is that by using film you get a consistent look without the puzzle of having to work on your digital files.
That’s why I see more and more of those film camera reviews like the one I am sharing today from Kitamura (google translated). The Olympus OM-2 (here one Bay) is truly a gorgeous camera!
