New Olympus 25mm lens test by Robin Wong and Jackie Loi.

The probably most interposing new product is the new Olympus 25mm f/1.8 lens. And it will already ship on February 12 according to Amazon (Click here). And if you want to learn more about the lens Robin Wong (Click here) posted the first part of his Olympus 25mm f/1.8 lens review:

There is something interesting about the contrast rendering of this M.Zuiko 25mm F1.8 lens. It does seem like the images come out more punchy with higher contrast. This was especially noticeable when I switched lens immediately from the M.Zuiko 14-42mm F2.5-5.6 EZ Pancake Zoom lens. In fact the only time I remember seeing this kind of contrast level was when I was shooting with the Olympus M.Zuiko 75mm F1.8 lens. I admit that the 25mm F1.8 is not as sharp as the 75mm F1.8 (one of the sharpest lenses around in the market) but the look and feel of the images somehow came out with similar tones. This is the main reason, straight out of the camera, images from the 25mm F1.8 actually looks a tad bit better than the 45mm F1.8.

Also Jackie Loi (Click here) tested the same lens on the same day with Robin and posted some image samples on his site.
Great lens, but it would have been even better if the lens would be a tiny bit cheaper :)

(FT5) A couple of GH 4K camera specs…

Share

I told you yesterday how the new GH 4K camera that will be announced on Friday is all about video. The new 16 megapixel sensor doesn’t improve the still quality. Panasonic main work was to create a body that can dissipate the heat produced by the new 4K camera. I also have been told the new GH 4K uses a 2,36 million dot OLED EVF. And it has no on sensor stabilization (unlike the GX7).

Panasonic didn’t set the price yet and the camera will ship in late Spring only.

These are the FT5 specs we know so far:
– New 16 Megapixel sensor optimized for 4K recording
– 2,36 million dot OLED EVF
– 200Mps and ALL-I intra mode recording (4K)
– Price less than $2,000 (final price to be determined).

Announcement on Friday Feb 7 at 5-6am London time. As usual follow the event live on 43rumors !

Guillermo: I just calculated the precise ‘ISO LOW’ in the Olympus E-M5 firmware 2.0 update: it is an ISO160, not ISO100. But it is real, it affects RAW data so good news for RAW shooters. Perhaps you like to comment: http://www.guillermoluijk.com/article/em5isolow/

David:It is a field test of Olympus’ older, 4/3rds, 50-200 f2.8-3.5 SWD lens (and it’s matching 1.4x converter) and the E-M1. I used the combination to shoot the crazies who race motocross bikes across frozen lakes, at -20C! Robin:Actually it’s no rumor I’d like to share, but my E-M1 review. I tried to sign up for the page, but it wasn’t working. Hope it’s ok I use the ‘share news and rumors’ box. My review is available in english and german and it contains tons of real word images, taken on the streets in asia. (FT5) New GH 4K camera has a new 16 MP sensor (but still image quality doesn’t improve)

Share

A highly trusted source confirmed that the new Panasonic GH 4K camera has a NEW(!) 16 Megapixel sensor. But on a first test he made there seems to be no improvement on stills Image Quality. The sensor’s goal is to deliver a super video quality and all the circuitry around the sensor has been redone to optimize heat dissipation.

And it’s confirmed. Announcement at 5-6am London time on Friday February 7 (London timezone). As usual you can follow live the announcement on 43rumors!

Photozone tests the Olympus 12-40mm lens and says it’s a “beautiful lens”.

Share

Photozone (Click here) tested the Olympus 12-40mm f/2.8 lens and writes:

Upon first contact you will immediately fall in love with the Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-40mm f/2.8 as the mechanical implementation is exemplary and meets the expectations of a pro lens. Although Olympus first pro zoom may not be perfect there’s much to like about this beautiful lens and while the pricing is a little too steep in our opinion it’s still in line with its direct competitor from Panasonic.

The lens earns very good scores for the mechanical and optical quality. But gets only 3 star out of five in the Price/Performance category.

E-M10 (first part-) review by Robin Wong. New 25mm image samples.

Share

Robin Wong posted the first part of his E-m10 review with a focus on “Handling, 3-Axis Image Stabilization and the New M.Zuiko 14-42mm EZ Lens“. It’s particularly interesting to read his consideration about the difference between the 3- and 5-axis stabilization. In short he writes:

To be entirely honest, I did not feel any difference using the 3-Axis IS, considering I have been so used to 5-Axis IS all this time.

And this are his thoughts about the new 14-42mm pancake zoom:

The Pancake Zoom lens is reasonably sharp, and I find it a tad bit sharper than what I usually get from the M.Zuiko 12-50mm F3.5-6.3. At wide angle the difference is not that significant, but as you zoom in to the telephoto end, the image quality is evidently better than what you can obtain from the older M.Zuiko 12-50mm F3.5-6.3 lens.

The second part of the review will be posted next week and in the meantime you can download the “OLYMPUS OM-D E-M10 IMAGE SAMPLE DOWNLOAD Part 1” for pixel peeping.

And many new image samples taken with the E-M10 and the new 25mm lens can be downloaded at Optyczne.
