Panasonic GH4 4096×2160 vs Alexa 2048×1152 24P

Cinematographer Sittipong Kongtong compared the performance of the $1,700 GH4 vs the $40,000 Arri Alexa. The GH4 footage looks a bit under exposed and cannot match the Arris dynamic range. Videofilmaker.com analyzed the results and writes:

Despite this (lower DR), the GH4 definitely holds its weight compared to the Alexa. For the most part it looks smooth with little to no motion blur when pausing. Although, the jagged movements on those reflectors being swung around (in the first vid) really screams DSLR; something you’ll need to consider if your film calls for action scenes. The results show that in daylight the GH4 is absolutely worth the price tag and a bit of a godsend for indie filmmakers. Whether or not it does as well in low light conditions will be another matter entirely.

Kodak shows the PixPro 1 MFT camera (again).

Share

Kodak is again displaying their soon to come new PixPro1 Micro Four Thirds camera. Photographyblog (Click here) posted 60 hands-on pictures of the camera with the new 12-45mm, 42.5-160mm and 400mm fieldscope lenses.

Dpreview (Click here) also had the chance to see the camera and writes:

This is the Pixpro S-1, an entry-level Micro Four Thirds mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. It will come with a 12-45mm F3.5-6.3 kit zoom that retracts when not in use for improved portability. There’s also a 42.5-160mm F3.5-5.9 telezoom and a slightly eccentric 400mm Fieldscope lens, which is manual focus and has a fixed aperture of F6.7. JK Imaging says that while these were originally designed for the Asian market, it plans to sell them in Europe too.

P.S.. Full camera specs at ePhotozine.

Watch this: Blackmagic Cinema Camera….explodes!

Share

Blackmagic makes some great MFT and EF mount Cinema cameras but this one from Forest Gibson just got…exploded! Watch the video if you don’t believe this can happen :)

Petapixel reports:

It’s worth noting that this seems to be a one-time deal. No other Blackmagic cameras have done this that we or planet5D can find and BM has responded to the situation quickly and professionally to make sure that it isn’t a more widespread problem.

Panasonic says 4K will not “fail” like 3D did.

Share

As you know it’s all about 4K this year! Panasonic has been the first but soon also Sony and Canon and maybe Olympus too will announce their 4K cameras. Do you believe 4K is just the next hype or the real big deal?

Trustedreviews talked with Panasonic Product manager Craig Cunningham. He said 4K will not “fail” like 3D did:

“When you see the different in picture quality between even Full HD and 4K, you see that it’s the future”. “At Panasonic we are doing what we can to address 4K content so our Lumix cameras for example all can film 4K so you can still create some 4K content you just need the movies now and the broadcasters to get on board. Netflix is going to be a great start to that.”

I can tell you from my small experience that unlike 3D…4K is very seriously considered for some present and many future documentary productions! And once you watch 4K video on a 4K TV you will not like it to go back to 1080 resolution :)

Tested: Panasonic GX7 works fine in Antarctica!

Share

The Scott Expedition – A Great Adventure from Studiocanoe on Vimeo.

43rumors readers Temujin sent me this video shot with the GX7 in Antarctica! And here is the text:

The GX7’s worked perfectly in Antarctica – as did my GH3. Here’s a quick overview video from the expedition. https://vimeo.com/87406935. The team sent back footage from the GX7’s via a custom made communications array – using the Iridium satellite system. The footage they sent back was reduced in quality to keep the file size down, but now I’m editing the raw files and we hope to make and finish a full documentary from the footage later this year.
Also – perhaps you will like this – https://vimeo.com/87651855. Shot with my GH3 and Panasonic lenses in Iceland over winter.

Nice work!
