Panasonic Announces SDXC/SDHC UHS-I Card

Today, Panasonic is introducing new SDXC and SDHC UHS-I cards, the Gold Series “SDUC”, complying with UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) and suitable for 4K video recording. UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) is the standard announced in November last year by the SD Association responsible for establishing an SD card standard to respond to market needs for 4K video, defining a new Speed Class that guarantees a constant minimum write speed of 30MB/s.

The Gold Series “SDUC” introduced by Panasonic can provide this UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) and is capable of stable and continuous real-time video recording at a minimum write speed of 30MB/s (240 Mbps). It can be used not only for unlimited 4K video recording in MOV/MP4 format, but is also capable of ultra high bitrate video recording at 200 Mbps (ALL-Intra) or 100 Mbps (IPB) for enabling smooth and beautiful high-quality video without the dropouts caused by an insufficient writing speed.

With products not compatible with UHS Speed Class 3, the Gold Series cards are compliant with UHS Speed Class 1 or Speed Class 10 with a constant minimum writing speed of 10 MB/s (80 Mbps). The stable writing performance ensures highly reliable recording of low bit-rate 4K videos as well as Full HD and standard videos. Further, the Gold Series cards are a perfect match for the New LUMIX-G “DMC-GH4”, which is capable of providing awesome video quality for unlimited expressiveness.

The other features of the Gold Series “SDUC” are shown below.

1. Ultra High Speed Transfer – – With UHS-I Bus Interface

The Gold Series can work with the UHS-I bus interface, which is capable of ultra high-speed read/write operations. When used with a UHS-I compliant product, the card can have a maximum read speed of 90MB/s and maximum write speed of 45MB/s*1. The high-speed read capability enables a smooth transfer from the SD card to a PC or tablet as well as quick preview on such products, while the high-speed writing capability is ideal for photo burst shooting by a D-SLR or D-SLM camera.

2. Tough and Long Lasting

The Gold Series offers long lasting data retention thanks to MLC flash memory, which is suitable for repetitive writing and offers long lasting data retention. The Gold Series is also equipped with the Proof 7 feature (water-, shock-, magnet-, X-ray-, electrostatic-, temperature-proof, and built-in fuse) to withstand severe conditions like those seen during heavy field use. Even if the internal destruction of the card occurs, the built-in fuse prevents it from overheating or igniting.

The new Gold Series “SDUC” cards will be available in memory capacities of 64 GB, 32 GB and 16 GB.

*1- Under UHS-I bus interface. The speed shown in the table above is not possible with a non-compliant UHS-I device. In that case, high speed mode or default mode is implemented. The actual speed depends on devices and conditions.

*2- Both the Speed Class and UHS Speed Class can only be implemented with Speed Class / UHS Speed Class compliant products.

*3- The SDXC memory card can be used with products that comply with SDXC, and the SDHC memory card can be used with products that comply with both SDHC and SDXC.

First GH4 vs GH3 high iso comparison. And 4K video available for download!

Share

SLRlounge (Click here) is the first website posting a GH4 versus GH3 High ISO comparison:

Overall, there is a clear improvement in the GH4 low light, high ISO performance when it comes to shooting jpegs. So, based on my first impression, Panasonic took what’s great about the GH3, from the ergonomic to the video quality, and improved just about everything. The new sensor produces noticeably better image quality especially in low light, the EVF and LCD are vastly improved, and of course, the headliner is the 4K video output, which we will cover more in-depth in the near future.

Bestmirrorlesscamerareviews posted a short GH4 hands-on article which also includes original 4K video for download at Google Drive (Click here).

January shipment report: Huge DSLR shipment drop, Mirrorless doing worse in Japan.

Share

Image courtesy: Personal View (Click here).

As usual Personal View (Click here) did a great job summarizing in graphs the Japanese camera shipment data (contains exact number of shipped cameras manufactured by Japanese companies). And there are two important news we can learn from the January report:

1) DSLR shipment dropped down to the lowest level since two years.

2) While mirrorless shipment to EU slightly increased (from 39,483 in December to 48,321 in January) and America where constant the shipment in Japan surprisingly dropped in Japan.

It’s really a challenging time for all companies producing system cameras! I am now wondering if sales will ever go up again…

(FT3) New GF camera to be announced in Spring.

Share

I got word the new Panasonic GF camera will be launched in late Spring. There is no bog surprise to expect on these cameras. It will be an evolution of the current Panasonic GF6. Patent images of the new GF have been found and posted here a couple of months ago (See images on top).

Question: GF, GM, G, GH, GX…a bit confusing. Why not merge GF and GM into one system?
