First Speedbooster XL review on the GH4.

Newsshooter (Click here) posted the first review of the brand new SpeedBooster XL adapter:

By precisely matching the S35 frame size and expanding low light shooting capabilities, the new Metabones makes the Panasonic GH4 (and new G7) a very interesting proposition if you are looking for a less expensive 4K S35 camera – especially for those who have an investment in Canon glass.

What the GH4 now offers is a S35 camera that can record 4K internally in 8-bit, plus 10-but recording externally to a recorder like the Atomos Shogun – a trick that even the new Sony a7R II can’t pull off. What the GH4/Speedbooster combination really lacks now is the highly anticipated V-log profile, something I hope will come very soon from Panasonic.

The Speedbooster XL is not of course a Panacea. Don’t expect the images coming out of the GH4 combo to beat a RED Dragon or an ARRI Alexa. It won’t. For now though I would be happy to recommend it to GH4 users who want the S35 frame size without the expense.

Olympus 7-14 mm f/2.8 test video by Pier-Yves

Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 7-14 mm f/2.8
from Pier-Yves Menkhoff on Vimeo.

Pier Yves sent me his latest test video shot with the brand new Olympus 7-14mm PRO lens:

2I love the wide angles lens. This lacks to Panasonic. There is no fixed wide angle lens below 28 mm. It’s a shame. The Olympus M. Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm F/2.8 has been tested with the Panasonic DMC-GM1. This is the “jewel” that I bring with me anywhere when I travel. I really love it. However, all is disproportionate. The Olympus is heavy and huge in comparison to the GM1. The result, if the quality is at the rendez-vous, the 7-14 is not suited to travel. It is best suited to lovers of architecture. With a 7-14, one is quickly frustrated not to zoom. Just a little bit !”

CameraLabs (Click here) posted the full Panasonic G7 review and writes:

For all the reasons mentioned in this verdict section, I find the Lumix G7 far more compelling than DSLRs pitched at the same price point. The real competition here comes from rival mirrorless cameras, particularly Sony’s A6000 (for its superior burst and continuous AF), Fujifilm’s XT10 (for it’s superb imaging pipeline), and the Olympus OMD EM10 (for its built-in stabilisation). You should carefully compare the feature sets of all these models to see if one’s a better fit for how and what you shoot, but if you’re into video or just want a great all-round mid-range camera, the Lumix G7 is hard to beat at this price point.

Panasonic 42,5mm f/1.7 reviewed at SLRgear.

SLRgear (Click here) tested the new Panasonic 42,5mm f/1.7 lens and writes:

With super sharp results, a small package and a low price point, what more can you want? For portrait shooters in the Micro Four Thirds mount, this is an excellent lens.

First GH4 (with V-Log) vs Sony A7s comparison.

Nick Driftwood posted that “Panasonic GH4 V log L versus Sony A7s S Log 2” comparison video. He writes:

Here’s test number 1 of a few coming up. A rather quick ‘vanilla’ test done in the back garden of my 83 year-old father – both cameras using similarly matched lenses , shutter and aperture was adjusted to keep in accordance to the default recommended LOG ISO as given by each camera. Exposure was bang on 0 for each. Nothing else I will give away about the above…just yet!
Panasonic GH4 has ISO 400 in V Log L and Sony A7s has 3200 ISO.
A7s is a full frame, GH4 is a M43.
I may or may not have moved the position of the focal length of each lens.
GH4 lens was a 12-35 Panasonic lens and the A7s was a 24-70 Canon.
This is a fun test and not to be taken seriously by camera fanboys.
With a little adjustment (not shown) its fairly easy to make both cameras match each other during grading. :-)
3D LUTs employed: Panasonic VLog_to_V709_for_V35_ver100 & Sony FS55 1.From_SLog2-SGumut_To_LC-709 .cubes placed using LUT Utility plugin on FCPX.
NO OTHER GRADING DONE ON THIS
All 4K recordings were performed originally on an Atomos Shogun (zero’d) in 422 8-bit on the Sony A7S and 422 10-bit on the Panasonic GH4.
