Panasonic Lumix G80 G85 review by Gordon Laing: “one of the best at its price point”

I am a big fan of those 1 hour reviews from Gordon Laing! So take out your popcorn and watch it :) And the full text review can be read at CameraLabs. The wrap up:

Panasonic’s Lumix G80 / G85 is a feature-packed camera that stacks-up very well against its rivals. As a mid-range mirrorless camera, you’ll enjoy the usual features including a decent viewfinder, articulated touch-screen, loads of manual control and built-in Wifi, but the G80 / G85 goes the extra mile with great quality 4k video, built-in stabilisation that rivals industry leader Olympus, and a weather-sealed body and kit zoom. Panasonic’s unique 4k Photo modes let you extract stills from video, refocus and even adjust the depth-of-field after the event, and while continuous autofocus during fast bursts is bettered by some rivals, it’ll still track action at 3-6fps with big zooms, and the single autofocus remains one the best around. Overall I find it hard to think of a better general-purpose all-rounder at this price point – highly recommended!

Quick GH5 Metabones Speedbooster XL test by Newsshooter

Youtuber Kaiman Wong features in a quick test of the Panasonic GH5 with Metabones Speedbooster XL 0.64x and a XEEN 50mm T1.5 cine lens. Many thanks to CVP for the opportunity to test out the camera.
Shot in 4K/25P and 150Mbps and recorded internally to SD card. The camera is a pre-production sample and image quality should not be taken as final. The camera was set in Cinelike V with contrast and noise reduction dialled down to minimum. ISO was 200 and the in-body image stabilisation was turned off.

Dpreview tested the new Panasonic FZ2500/FZ2000:

Dpreview published their Panasonic FZ2500/FZ2000 review:

It is a well-designed enthusiast bridge camera focused on video, and it offers capture tools that you won’t find on any other camera in its class. 4K video quality is excellent, though there’s a substantial crop factor, essentially knocking out the wide end of the lens. Still image quality is decent, though it’s hampered by a so-so lens and JPEG engine that could use a tune-up. If you’re a videophile then it’s a top choice. If not, there are cheaper options out there.

GH5 High ISO grading test from Martin Wallgren

LUMIX GH5 High ISO grading test [4K] from Martin Wallgren on Vimeo.

This is a impressive GH5 test made by Martin Wallgren. This is what he writes:

This is my first uploaded footage that I shot with the GH5 pre-production model I got just recently. I shot the footage handheld at ISOs between 3.200 and 10.000, quick grade with FilmConvert Pro in FCPX.
Since I don’t have V-Log activated just yet on the camera, I was shooting this with a tweaked CineLike V profile, see below for details. I discovered to my surprise while goofing around with my anamorphic lens that the camera seem to deliver even cleaner looking footage at the highest ISO settings by shooting in any of the 4K 8bit 24/25/50/30/60p Anamorphic 4:3 modes. I really don’t know the reason behind this difference, but the footage in anamorphic mode is downscaled to 3328×2496 from full readout resolution, and there may be some sort of sweet spot for the internal processing. I cropped and upscaled the footage to a custom 3840×1620 2.35:1 timeline in FCPX. No de-noising or stabilisation was applied in post.
Download the ProRes Proxy “Original” if you want to have a closer look with less compression artefacts.
I am hoping this will put an end to all the low-light, dynamic range and sensor-size related criticism that a bunch of non-users of the camera have been discussing lately on social media. The GH5 is a major improvement over the GH4, the G80 and any other Micro Four Thirds camera produced to this date, and in all kinds of ways. While this footage is not all clean, it’s a way of showing what you can do in reality with this camera.
This was shot with the new LEICA DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4 that will also be available as a kit lens with the GH5. I encourage you to imagine what you can shoot with this camera at these ISO levels with a really fast prime, such as the Voigtländer Nokton f/0.95 set of manual lenses or Metabones SpeedBooster Ultra adaptor and fast Canon/Nikon glass (all of which will benefit from the 5-axis sensor IBIS).
