Kai:Just wanted to share a video I just created in Chicago, IL for Modern Luxury / CS Magazine, a fashion/travel/nightlife oriented large publication in the US.
This video was made using the Panasonic GH4 (bought via the great Vitaliy’s website personal-view.com), G6 and GH2 using all kinds of gears (steadicam merlin, manfrotto steadimodo, tripods & slider) & lenses over a period of a 6-day fashion photo/video shoot in the end of spring, to highlight some of the nightlife hotels/lounges in Chicago. Lenses used were Canon FD 50mm F1.4 (with and without RJ Lens Turbo), SLR Magic 25mm F0.95, Olympus 9-18mm, Panasonic 12-35mm F2.8, 20mm F1.7, 14 -140mm among others. Some footage was shoot at 4K on the GH4, some others at 1080p60/96/24 fps on GH4 or G6 or GH2 (with hack).
Feel free to spot which camera was used for which sequence ;-).

I’ve won quite a few awards using the Panasonic G/GH cameras in the past few years… such as PDN (Photo District News) Photo Annual in 2012, American Aperture Awards in 2013, and PDN Top Knots in 2012 & 2013. This goes to say that one doesn’t need to shoot with Canon cameras to be a professional these days.

Olympus E-PL6 comes to UK.

Olympus launched the E-PL6 in UK. This camera is almost the same as the current E-Pl6 but adds Wi-Fi capable FlashAir SD card and a “class best, super slim interchangeable electronic pancake lens in the ‘Expression Kit’ package” (so writes Olympus UK). The E-Pl6 is already available in asia and can be bought via [shoplink 47024 ebay]many eBay sellers (Click here)[/shoplink].

This is the official press release:

Freedom of expression, at full speed ahead

London, July 9, 2014 – Cameras with interchangeable lenses don’t get any slimmer** or cooler than the new PEN E-PL6. Or better equipped for posting superior shots on the Web. The latest PEN comes supplied with a WiFi-capable FlashAir SD card and a class-best, super-slim, interchangeable electronic pancake zoom lens. Just two reasons Olympus calls this package the ‘Expression Kit’. The E-PL6 is also packed with technologies inherited from Olympus’ flagship OM-D series, so it has everything it takes to capture stylish, stand-out images – anytime, anywhere and on the fly.

P for Personality

For anyone who likes to express themselves and their own sense of style, the Expression Kit is the camera-lens-card combination of choice. The all-metal E-PL6 has the feel-cool factor that comes from renowned PEN’s trademark design and adds a contemporary design icon to any outfit. Like every PEN, it’s built to feel great – and look beautiful – in your hands. For a camera of this calibre, it’s also light and compact, so it will fit easily in most handbags, even with the supplied lens attached. In fact, the lens is exactly what makes this the most portable PEN yet.

Enhancing your creative options are 12 striking Art Filters and 6 Art Effects to choose from ensuring the E-PL6 has the potential to spread some serious envy online, with one-touch, one-of-a-kind clips and shots.

E for Excellence

The E-PL6 is compatible with a wide range of Micro Four Thirds specialist lenses made by the M.ZUIKO experts, and the Expression Kit includes one of their latest achievements. The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-42mm*** 1:3.5-5.6 EZ pancake zoom lens is the world’s slimmest in this category. The M.ZUIKO signature is unmistakeable – in the startling size of the lens, the quiet motor, and the quality of the images it captures.

Speed, power and portability are key to spontaneous, individual and stylish photography – and the PEN E-PL6 has all three in abundance. In combination with any Micro Four Thirds lens and the powerful TruePic VI image processor, super-quick start-up and autofocus mean the camera

E-PL6 MAIN FEATURES:

> Exquisitely designed, small and lightweight system camera with an all-metal finish
> Supplied with the world’s slimmest** pancake zoom lens for go-anywhere creativity
> FlashAir** WiFi card included for posting via a compatible smartphone and the free and Olympus Image Share app
> Outstanding image quality thanks to the 16.1 Megapixel Live MOS sensor and TruePic VI image processor
> Large, tiltable and swivelling high-res LCD touchscreen for framing selfies and other shots at original angles
> Fast AF and fast start-up

Reacts as fast as you think, even in low light. It delivers 16.1-Megapixel stills and 1080 Full HD movies with the consistently rich gradation, low noise and wide dynamic range that compacts and smartphones can’t hope to achieve. When these images are shared, the difference in quality is even more striking: Post a picture of a moving subject shot in poor light on a smartphone, then count the likes. There’s no better argument for the PEN and its versatile ISO settings.

The E-PL6 has a raft of new PEN features to help you quickly adjust settings, frame your shot, and capture a remarkable image. For example, Level Gauge overlays a grid on the LCD when there’s no horizon as a reference. Interval shooting for stills stitches together stop-motion videos while Small AF Target Mode makes it easy to focus on tiny parts of the subject, then magnify these for more precise focusing. Short Release Time Lag Mode combines with Fast AF to reduce the delay that can otherwise make it difficult to accurately capture fast-moving subjects.

N for Network.

The E-PL6 is all about shooting and showing, and that includes posting your oeuvre online. The supplied FlashAir WiFi card lets you quickly transfer photos and videos to your smartphone via the Olympus Image Share app, then effortlessly on to social media sites. The large and tiltable 3-inch monitor swivels up and right round so it’s visible from the front of the camera, giving you the flexibility to frame a whole new class of selfie – or other shots from unusual angles.

The PEN E-PL6 comes in a black or white body and is compatible with a variety of accessories that customise the look. For example, a matching grip.

Together with the FlashAir card and pancake lens, it will be available in beautifully designed packaging from mid-July 2014, for £429 (SRP, equivalent in other currencies).

Product specifications are subject to change without notice. Please check the Olympus website at http://www.olympus.co.uk for the latest specifications.

Olympus Pen: Portraits of a Camera (Qamera).

Jeremy:I know you try to keep more to positive MFT news, but I would be very interested in getting some official word from Olympus on the widely reported rear dial responsiveness issue on the EM1, or some inside info from one of your trusted source on what the plan is to deal with this issue. It has been reported in numerous places, by many users…

Dino:I wanted to share an article I wrote comparing the OMD E-M1 with the Canon 5D Mark 2. Both cameras are highly capable tools in their own ways and I think the biggest take away from my experience using both is not what is the best camera on paper, rather what is the best camera for you.

Jurek:Video testing the reworked SLR Magic HyperPrime CINE II 25mm T0.95. The update allows the lens to hold the SLR Anamorphot without the need for a lens support. This frees the camera (here the GH4) to become a truly portable 4K CinemaScope camera: https://vimeo.com/98099505
