Olympus interview at IR: “PEN-F sales almost met our expectations”

Imaging Resoruce interviewed Shigemi Sugimoto, Head of Imaging Business Unit, Olympus Corp. Here are some of the key take aways:

E-M1II sales:

“Talking about the domestic market (Japan), we found that many users have been switching to E-M1 Mark II from the other brands, beyond our expectation.”

MFT vs Full Frame:

“For a full frame mirrorless camera, even if they have a smaller body, its overall size will be increased when putting on the lenses. For that reason, we can say that our product is smaller as an overall system, among the mirrorless products in the market.”

PEN-F sales:

“The selling situation has almost meet our expectation.”

Relationship between medical and imaging business:

The [fruits of] the technology are utilized in the imaging sector first, then it’s taken in the medical sector to use, because the life cycle of the medical applications are longer than the imaging ones. So initially we start our investment in the imaging sector, then hand it over to the medical sector.

Tom:I attempted to document the practical “image quality” difference between a 16MP Olympus m43 camera and D850 in the final print at viewing distance. Unlike many pixel peeping reviews, I invite readers to download test photo RAW files that they can edit and print to whatever size they like. For myself, and my typical print sizes, I see no practical difference.!

New mirrorless competition from Nikon hitting the market in Spring 2019

After the big Nikon 1 system fail Nikon is now re-thinking the whole mirrorless startegy. And today the big Japanese television NHK posted an interview with Nikon. The one big takeaway is this: Nikon’s completely new mirrorless system will be on market by Spring 2019.

Nikon did yet not unveil if this is going to be an APS-C or a FF system. If it’s the latter it won’t necessarily be a very direct competitor of the MFT system and play in the same league as the Sony A7 series.
