Crazy hack: Patched Panasonic GF1 now records up to 100MBit/s!!!

Panasonic GF1 ‘400 24’ settings – 720/30 100mbit 422 from huw jenkins on Vimeo.

Emmy Award winner Huw Jenkins just sent us the link to his video shoot with the patched Panasonic GF1Panasonic GF1Panasonic GF1Panasonic GF1Panasonic GF1Panasonic GF1Panasonic GF1Panasonic GF1Panasonic GF1Panasonic GF1Panasonic GF1Panasonic GF1Panasonic GF1 with 100Mbit/s!

Shot with my new ‘400 24’ settings.
these settings allow you to record clips of up to 2 minutes 27 seconds on the GF1 at 100mbits, 422 color space, 720/30fps
more stable than ‘410 24’, you can now delete from the class 10 SD card and re-record without needing to format (at a push, see below).

single error trip:
‘motion recording was cancelled due to the limitation of the writing speed of the card’
each time you turn on the camera, a single error trip will occur. as with all GF1 100mbit settings so far, the first high bitrate clip recorded will trip this error message, ignore it and continue shooting. the gf1 will record perfectly till you switch off the camera.

card formating:
use a freshly formated class 10 card. if the card already had data on it, files might be fragmented which is more than likely to cause multiple recording errors. this also occurs when deleting files and re-recording. Sometimes my sd (sandisk) can handle this, other times it fails.

when the card is full, the last 10-30 seconds on a 8gb SD fails to write.

file size / clip length:
the maximum size file i can record at any bitrate is 1.85gb. when using ‘400 24’, the bitrate is variable, depending on the complexity of the image being recorded. here is a clip length guide
4 minutes 42 seconds at 56.29 Mbits/second
2 minutes 27 seconds at 100.09 Mbits/second

the settings, for ptool 3.36 or higher:
change only the following
version change: 1 higher than your current version
all Q settings: set to 400
all T settings: set to 24
240->244: selected
leave everything else unselected

(FT4) New Panasonic sensor with gapless design

Finally we received a small but very good info from trusted sources about the next Panasonic sensor. The new sensor will have gapless Micro-lenses.
Canon has been the first to deliver such a sensor with the Canon 50DCanon 50DCanon 50DCanon 50DCanon 50DCanon 50DCanon 50DCanon 50DCanon 50DCanon 50DCanon 50DCanon 50D (and lately with the Canon 7D and EOS-1D Mark IV). Chuck Westfall, Technical Advisor at Canon USA said that “noise levels are expected to be 1 to 1.5 stops better in the high ISO range” (Source: Rob Galbraith).

The Panasonic sensor is ready for mass-production so it is very likely that we will see that sensor inside the new GH2 (launch to be expected late September at Photokina). We didn’t get any further details yet but the info we post here today came from our very best sources!

Good news!

Hacked Panasonic GF1 1080p Video of the Moon from mpgxsvcd on Vimeo.

With the firmware hack and a $30 400mm lens I was able to shoot the moon. The video isn’t as sharp as the stills but I think they both look pretty good.

CameraKompare, a new iPhone app for you!

J.D. just created a new awesome APP for your iPhone:

Hello,
Thanks for such an awesome site. I’m a longtime 43rumors.com fan and have been an Olympus fan for what seems forever… I started w/E-1 and never looked back, now the E-P1 always has a place in my backpack :-).

Yesterday my iPhone app called “CameraKompare” was approved by Apple:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/camera-kompare/id377666756?mt=8

The purpose of the app is to have complete specs for almost every digital camera (1400+), and to let you compare any two cameras that you want to. It can also automatically find similar cameras (based on format, size, zoom, etc.) The app has free lifetime updates and I’ll be keeping it fresh as new cameras are release. Currently it has an introductory price of $0.99 USD

And since I am a big EVIL fan, I made sure that the app has every EVIL camera that I know of:

Please keep up the great work and thanks so much for everything!
